Katmandu, Nepal - A major landslide early Saturday morning near Nepal’s border with China killed at least eight people and left hundreds missing, officials in Nepal said. It also washed out a crucial highway and blocked a river, leading to a dangerous buildup of water. “Hundreds of people are missing and at least 40 houses are buried in the landslide,” said Ganesh Khatri Chhetri, a Nepal police spokesman. At least 16 people had been rescued, he said. A section of the Araniko highway connecting Nepal with China was swept away, and rising water around the blockage led thousands to seek higher ground. Police and military personnel in helicopters

Comments:
Tragedy strikes, leaving many dead and others to suffer in the days ahead.

A Mound of Forgotten Money,

For years, Jerry Seinfeld and Joan Rivers, and as many as 6,914 other customers, have never claimed refunds due them from Bergdorf’s. (Snip) These are just a few names culled from as many as 31 million owners of accounts held by New York State as unclaimed property — accounts surrendered by banks, insurers, utility companies and others that said they had tried but failed to find the rightful owners of deposits, dividend checks, back wages, rebates and other forgotten funds, which have grown to a record $13.3 billion. More than $700 million from abandoned and dormant accounts flooded into the state in the last year alone.

Anti-Semitism Rises in Europe
Amid Israel-Gaza Conflict

Berlin - Across Europe, the conflict in Gaza is generating a broader backlash against Jews, as threats, hate speech and even violent attacks proliferate in several countries. Most surprising perhaps, a wave of incidents has washed over Germany, where atonement for the Holocaust and other Nazi crimes is a bedrock of the modern society. A commitment to the right of Israel to exist is ironclad. Plaques and memorials across the country exhort, “Never Again.” Children are taught starting in elementary school that their country’s Nazi history must never be repeated. Even so, academics say the recent episodes may reflect a rising climate of

Washington - Following the quick collapse of the cease-fire in Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the White House not to force a truce with Palestinian militants on Israel. Sources familiar with conversations between Netanyahu and senior U.S. officials, including Secretary of State John Kerry, say the Israeli leader advised the Obama administration "not to ever second guess me again" on the matter. The officials also said Netanyahu said he should be "trusted" on the issue and about the unwillingness of Hamas to enter into and follow through on cease-fire talks. Congress is leaving town for a five-week recess after failing to address one of the most serious issues facing the nation: the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border. Republican leaders in the House were able to recover from an embarrassing setback by passing border legislation late Friday full of political red meat for their conservative base, including revisions to a 2008 anti-trafficking law and more money for the National Guard. Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and his GOP colleagues also passed — over bitter Democratic objections — a bill to rein in President Barack Obama’s program to shield undocumented immigrants from deportations.

HOUSTON, Texas--As unaccompanied minors continue to illegally cross the Texas-Mexico border, President Obama´s Health and Human Services (HHS) has been quietly releasing them onto U.S. soil. A total of 30,340 unaccompanied minors have already been released from federal custody and placed into foster homes, according to HHS´ Office of Refugee and Resettlement (ORR). While many migrants have been released in border states like Texas and California, others have been set free in Alaska. A spokesman from HHS confirmed to Breitbart Texas that as of July 7, five unaccompanied minors were released in Alaska.

Federal safety regulators say that not only are General Motors ignition switches defective, so is GM´s website for determining if you are driving one of the defective cars. People who use the GM "VIN look-up" site are told their cars aren´t part of an active recall if the repair parts aren´t yet available, even when the cars are, in fact, being recalled. VIN is the vehicle identification number. GM and other automakers maintain websites that allow owners to check for recalls by plugging in their vehicle´s VIN. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said late Friday that it "determined that owners of some recalled GM vehicles are receiving incorrect

Montevideo - Latin America´s leaders are among the most vehement in condemning Israel´s Gaza offensive -- labelling the Jewish state "terrorist", recalling ambassadors, and offering near-unanimous, unwavering support to Palestinians. "I can´t remember another similar situation where (all the countries in the region) have reacted practically as a bloc," said political scientist Reginaldo Nasser, a professor at the Pontifical University in Sao Paulo, Brazil. One of the most symbolic recent developments came from Bolivian President Evo Morales -- one of the leaders of Latin America´s far left -- who put Israel on its list of "Terrorist States" and

A Hamas terror cell attacked a Givati unit on Friday in Rafah and kidnapped an officer after the Israeli soldiers discovered a large cross-border terrorism tunnel, stretching from Rafah deep into Israel, a senior army source said Saturday. The tunnel surfaced some two kilometers into Israeli territory, the source added. A tunnel shaft on the Gazan side surfaced in an open area surrounded by homes. Terrorists emerged from the shaft, and a suicide bomber detonated himself near the soldiers, before the officer was kidnapped, the source said. In the hours following the kidnapping, the IDF launched an intensive search in Rafah, accompanied by

Last week, Arizona executed Joseph Wood. The procedure took nearly two hours and Friday, a Fox 10 reporter revealed that executioners had to give Wood 15 doses of lethal drugs. The Arizona Department of Corrections told reporter Troy Hayden Friday that it gave Wood the drugs over the course of his execution. The revelation that it took 15 doses of the drugs revises earlier reports that Wood was only given two doses. In light of Wood’s death, Arizona plans to review its execution process, the department said. Wood’s execution drew widespread attention for both its long duration, and for conflicting reports that he gasped for air

The United Nations slammed Israel for possibly committing war crimes in its fight against Hamas — and then backed that accusation by suggesting the Jewish nation ought to be sharing its Iron Dome defensive technology with the very terror group it’s fighting. U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said to members of the media at an “emergency” meeting of the U.N. Human Rights Council that Israel was falling short in its duty to protect citizens in the Gaza Strip from getting killed by its rockets. “There is a strong possibility that international law has been violated, in a

An independent panel appointed by the Pentagon and Congress said Thursday that President Obama’s strategy for sizing the armed services is too weak for today’s global threats. The National Defense Panel called on the president to dump a major section of his 2014 Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR) and write a broader strategy that requires the military to fight on multiple fronts at once. It also said the shrinking U.S. armed forces, which are being downsized to fit that strategy and budget cuts, is a “serious strategic misstep on the part of the United States.” The forces’ numbers spelled out in Mr. Obama’s

Bill O’Reilly obviously doesn’t care for how President Obama and the Democrats are running things, but tonight he also had some tough words for the GOP. He asked guest Kate Obenshain why the Republicans continue to remain in the muck with the left and try to “destroy one another” instead of getting things done. O’Reilly asked, “Shouldn’t they rise above it?” Obenshain argued that it’s Democrats doing all the nasty politicking and name-calling, as well as the ginning up of impeachment. O’Reilly, however, noted some conservatives are bringing it up and said there’s “plenty of hate on both sides.” Obenshain objected, “No,

Perhaps it says something about us that our most interesting presidential candidates swear they won´t run for president. This is true of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and it´s increasingly true of Mitt Romney. As regular readers of this column know, I´ve never been much of a Romney booster. I´ve also expressed skepticism about the notion he would run again. But let´s not let "a foolish consistency" cloud our judgment. There is reason to believe that a third try wouldn´t be an absurd venture. First, in the intervening years since 2012 — and on a range of issues, not the least of which is
