A Mound of Forgotten Money,
and Even You May Have a Claim

New York Times, by Sam Roberts

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 8/2/2014 8:01:25 AM

For years, Jerry Seinfeld and Joan Rivers, and as many as 6,914 other customers, have never claimed refunds due them from Bergdorf’s. (Snip) These are just a few names culled from as many as 31 million owners of accounts held by New York State as unclaimed property — accounts surrendered by banks, insurers, utility companies and others that said they had tried but failed to find the rightful owners of deposits, dividend checks, back wages, rebates and other forgotten funds, which have grown to a record $13.3 billion. More than $700 million from abandoned and dormant accounts flooded into the state in the last year alone.

Comments:
No, this is not one of those ads from TV or radio requiring a call to some 800-number, but just an interesting read. As a matter of fact, my 15 shares quarterly dividends from G.E. are so "minuscule," that can´t remember last time I cashed their check. (Got one this week).

Every couple of years one or another of the local TV stations in Seattle will do a story about ´forgotten´ money. Two years ago, I looked up all my relative´s names and did find $80 for my nephew. There are ´organization´s´ who advertise they´ll find money for you for a percentage of what they find, but every state government has a webpage, if you look for it, that you can look for yourself for free.

State of NM ran a scam like this years ago offering rebates and published names. People came in to claim their "rebate"...funny, they all had outstanding warrants.

While doing research on the family tree I found a recent abandoned property listing from my home state that had my great aunt´s name on it. I was surprised as she´d been dead for 30 years. I found the address of her only grandson and reconnected with some long lost relatives.

I never did ask what the property was. The 30 years makes me suspect it was an unused cemetery plot as most other types of property is considered abandoned after just a few years.

Revisiting the Moon
New York Times, by Staff    Original Article

As the moon wheels around Earth every 28 days and shows us a progressively greater and then stingier slice of its sun-lightened face, the distance between moon and Earth changes, too. At the nearest point along its egg-shaped orbit, its perigee, the moon may be 26,000 miles closer to us than it is at its far point. And should the moon happen to hit its ever-shifting orbital perigee at the same time that it lies athwart from the sun, we are treated to a so-called supermoon, a full moon that can seem close enough to embrace — as much as 12 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than the average full moon.

Washington - The Obama administration is preparing to carry out a campaign against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria that may take three years to complete, requiring a sustained effort that could last until after President Obama has left office, according to senior administration officials. The first phase, an air campaign with nearly 145 airstrikes in the past month, is already underway to protect ethnic and religious minorities and American diplomatic, intelligence and military personnel, and their facilities, as well as to begin rolling back ISIS gains in northern and western Iraq.

Mayor de Blasio has sent 1,412 homeless people packing since taking office in January — keeping pace with Mayor Bloomberg’s bum-banishment program despite lambasting his Republican predecessor’s homeless policies. Liberal advocates for homeless New Yorkers slammed de Blasio for ignoring his own “Tale of Two Cities” campaign rhetoric to “push poor people out of the city.” “This is ridiculous,” said Luis Tejada, former head of the Mirabal Sisters Cultural and Community Center in West Harlem. “I worked for [de Blasio’s] campaign. We expected more from him. This is a big surprise.”

Peabody, MA - Representative John F. Tierney, an embattled nine-term Democrat, knows about tough races. A lawyer from Salem, Mr. Tierney first ran for Congress in 1994 from this district on the North Shore of Boston and lost narrowly to the Republican incumbent. He returned for a grudge match in 1996 and beat the incumbent in one of the closest contests in the country. After recounts that stretched into December, Mr. Tierney was declared the winner by just 371 votes out of more than 260,000 cast. (Snip) But in 2012 he found himself in another squeaker. Sen. Feinstein: Confront ISIS

Senator Dianne Feinstein says the U.S. must confront ISIS now or deal with the militant group when it is a much more dangerous threat. Feinstein, who serves as chair of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, explained her position in an op-ed published on USA Today´s website Sunday evening. She focused on the two videos recently released by the militant group, depicting the beheadings of two American journalists; James Foley and Steven Sotloff. She said she believes the group has grown into a "significant military force" and controls large territories in Syria and Iraq. "The threat ISIS poses cannot be overstated.

On Sunday’s broadcast of FNC’s “The Fox Report,” Pat Caddell, the former pollster for President Jimmy Carter, explained how images first shown on Breitbart Texas back in June of children that have entered the United States illegally that have been warehoused at Border Patrol facilities have influenced President Barack Obama’s policy on immigration. According to Caddell, those imagines defined the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border and have caused Obama to delay his so-called amnesty by executive fiat effort, despite Obama saying otherwise earlier in the day on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

The president did take some responsibility saying, “But there’s no doubt that after having talked to the families, where it was hard for me to hold back tears listening to the

Al-Jazeera has retracted a controversial story it published last week that questioned the authenticity of the videos that showed the execution of James Foley and Steven Sotloff, chalking it up to a “Hollywood” fabrication to provoke war. When accessing the link to the story, deemed by many online commentators as offensive and insensitive, an error page now appears, Al Arabiya News reported. Al-Jazeera English later posted a retraction on its website that called the post “inaccurate.” The story had suggested that Foley likely fabricated the execution video, despite confirmations from the U.S. government that the video was real,

As Congress returns to Washington Monday after a monthlong break, lawmakers are divided on whether or not the president needs to come to Congress for a new authorization of force against Islamic State — also known as ISIS or ISIL — forces in Syria. Rep. Peter T. King, New York Republican, said Sunday it would benefit President Obama to get Congress onboard with strikes against the Islamic State but that he shouldn’t waste time doing so if he wants to take immediate action. “If that’s going to delay what he wants to do, he should go ahead and take action without waiting for Congress,” Mr. King said on

Consider the following: the situation in the Middle East is so unsustainably bad, that there cannot not be a change, and it cannot change to the better; or, the threat of the Islamic State group can even generate a positive outcome if it compels old antagonists to rally around a common cause. The Islamic State group poses such a massive threat to those in the Middle East and beyond, that other real or perceived threats - such as the Iranian nuclear arms issue, Bashar al-Assad's dictatorial rule,
