COLUMBIA – A drone carrying cellphones, marijuana and other contraband into a South Carolina maximum-security prison never made it inside the 12-foot-high razor wire fence, and authorities said Wednesday they are looking for one of two people accused in connection with trying to sneak it in. The search has been ongoing since April 21, when officials found a small, crashed drone in bushes outside the walls of Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, according to Corrections Department spokeswoman Stephanie Givens. At the site, Givens said that officers also found materials that inmates aren’t supposed to have, including the phones, tobacco products, marijuana

Comments:
Shocking that someone would attempt to smuggle tobacco into a prison. Don´t they know it´s a no smoking environment?

A lot of the time I wonder if the use of drones can come to any good ending.

Drones are going to completely frustrate law enforcement and defense efforts in many ways.

Transporting illegal drugs is perhaps the most obvious. But small, cheap explosive drones will probably be worse. Or using them to spread diseases and poisons.

Those great minds are always thinking.

Can´t you envision thousands of personal drones flying overhead ? After all, if Martha has one, everybody should have one.

An Athens-Clarke County police officer shot and killed a dog Tuesday after it mauled a 10-year-old boy and then attacked the officer, the Athens Banner-Herald reports. Police responded to a home at 9:46 p.m. after the attack was reported. A 14-year-old boy told the officer his brother had been bitten in the face by the family’s pit bull, the Banner-Herald reports. “(He) was visibly upset about what just happened and expressed his desire for the dog to die,” according to a police incident report, the Banner-Herald reports. Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has called for an end to the fighting and bombing in Gaza. “Both sides must distinguish between combatants and noncombatants, and Israel must ensure that its use of force is proportionate in accordance with international humanitarian law. More immediately, all combat operations must stop, and Israeli troops should withdraw from Gaza,” Carter said in a statement released Tuesday. So far, more than 600 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed in the fighting, according to reports. The Israeli death toll is estimated at 29, including two civilians. Humantarian groups have also called for an end to

It always comes back to the dinner table with this guy. The 75-year-old Pakistani immigrant convicted in Brooklyn of beating his wife to death because she served him lentils instead of goat should get the minimum sentence, his lawyer argued Wednesday — because the lack of Pakistani food behind bars will be a hardship. “His inability to speak English and his inability to have Pakistani food will make his incarceration even more difficult than the average inmate,” defense attorney Julie Clark wrote in court papers seeking the minimum 15 years to life sentence for Noor Hussain. Happy 158th birthday, Nikola Tesla. The anniversary of the Serbian-American inventor´s birth will be celebrated Thursday with cake and a flag-raising ceremony at his former laboratory in Shoreham, followed by discussions of his work at Shoreham-Wading River High School. Both events are free. Tesla, who was born July 10, 1856, in Croatia, has been credited with developing wireless technologies and devising some of the major components used in modern radio and electricity. Tesla achieved local fame in the early 20th century when he worked for about 12 years in a Shoreham lab called Wardenclyffe, at Route 25A and Randall Road.

Is the Name Kaffir Lime Racist?

If you’re an American, you might not flinch when you hear a certain bumpy green citrus fruit referred to as a kaffir lime. But in many parts of the world—most notably South Africa—the common moniker for the fruit, best known as an ingredient in Southeast Asian cooking, sounds heinously offensive. As Veronica Vinje recently pointed out on Straight.com, kaffir is “a horrible racial epithet, akin to using the N-word in North America.” So why are these limes called by that name? The K-word has a long, complex history, but how it came to refer to a type of citrus fruit is a bit murky. The Arabic word kafir was originally used to refer to

We’re being had. Again. For six years, President Obama has endeavored to will the country into accepting two pillars of his alternative national-security reality. First, he claims to have dealt decisively with the terrorist threat, rendering it a disparate series of ragtag jayvees. Second, he asserts that the threat is unrelated to Islam, which is innately peaceful, moderate, and opposed to the wanton “violent extremists” who purport to act in its name. Now, the president has been compelled to act against a jihad that has neither ended nor been “decimated.” The jihad, in fact, has inevitably intensified under his counterfactual

Washington - The parents of Michael Brown said Saturday in an interview with The Associated Press they were unmoved by the apology of the Ferguson, Missouri, police chief weeks after their unarmed 18-year-old son was killed by a police officer. Brown´s mother, Lesley McSpadden, called for Chief Tom Jackson to be fired, and his father, Michael Brown Sr., said rather than an apology, they would rather see Officer Darren Wilson arrested for the death of their son on Aug. 9. Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace asked neurosurgeon and GOP novelty Ben Carson, who is very vocally teasing a presidential run, if his inexperience disqualified him from the office, especially given the results of Obama’s alleged inexperience. “After looking at Barack Obama and what’s happened with his lack of political experience over the last six years, wouldn’t putting Ben Carson in the Oval Office be akin to putting a politician in an operating room and having him perform one of your brain surgeries?” Wallace asked. Shockingly, Carson said no. “I think what is required for leadership is wisdom and the

When the U.S. military strikes, its leaders often choose colorful code names for the operation that sometimes stick in history, like Operation Overlord or Rolling Thunder or Desert Storm. Not this time. The U.S.-led air campaign against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria doesn´t have a name. "I know of no plans at this point to name it," Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby said Thursday. Since World War II, almost every U.S. military operation, large and small, has had a code name. And that name usually sticks when veterans talk about the conflicts in which they participated, such

The new rules would ban profiling based on religion, ethnicity or sexual orientation and includes no exemption for national security investigations, the Los Angeles Times reports. Political pollsters have a tough job. They have to create formulas to determine if the person they are interviewing is likely to vote, and it is within this calculation that their reputations are made. Typically, those who are likely to vote in an off-year election are pretty set. They are the people who always vote in elections — with some motivated by specific issues. In a wave election, the number of those motivated by specific issues escalates, changing the electoral landscape as the candidates who are beneficiaries of this increased participation sweep to victory. The 2014 election is rapidly looking like something new
