I Pushed the Lance Armstrong Lie:
An Open Letter to Greg LeMond

Daily Beast, by Mark McKinnon

Original Article

Posted By:StormCnter, 7/31/2014 5:42:50 PM

Dear Greg. Lance won’t say it but I will. I apologize. I believed in Lance’s lie. My wife had a very deadly form of cancer, and his story was a powerful elixir that helped us get through it. We called Annie “Lance Armstrong in a skirt.” And then for 10 years I served on the board of the Lance Armstrong Foundation, later the Livestrong Foundation, which did—and still does—truly great and innovative work for those living with and through cancer. But through all of those years, I was complicit in pushing the myth. And all I really knew about you was what I heard

Is anyone really thinking about Lance Armstrong any more? Really?

We watched the three weeks of the Tour de France and didn´t even give him a thought.

I´d list Eddy "The Cannibal" Merckx as the greatest cyclist ever... but Lance has lost the American crown to Greg LeMond, for sure.

(I had the good fortune to meet Greg many years ago, before Lance rose to and fell from grace.)

That´s hard to do. The whole scenario must be weighing heavily on McKinnon´s soul. I recall LeMond being being bitter back in the ´90s and thought it was sour grapes. Apparently not. His day in the sun was cut short by Armstrong´s actions.

Sadly it is hard to take anything McKinnon says or writes seriously. This turncoat stabbed Bush and the GOP in the back at the worst possible time--and was one of the reasons we lost to Obama.

Armstrong has done for cycling in the US more than anyone else. Sure he cheated. But cycling exploded because of his ´success´ and that genie can´t be put back in the bottle. Bike manufacturers, cycling equipment, the sport itself have all benefited. The results is as liberal as Armstrong´s main squeeze after he divorced his wife. It was a lie but its intent was pure and the results were fantastic.

I´m not here to defend Lance Armstrong. He´s weird and pathological. But a sport that takes away all his Tour de France wins and decides not to list ANY winner in any of those years because it´s clear that the others will have the same problems has so many issues that it may as well just let people take steroids and amphetamines and pick the winners out of those who survive.

State Department spokesman Jen Psaki makes me psick. If you read P.G. Wodehouse, you know the “P” in her name is silent, as in “phthisis,” “psychic” and “ptarmigan” (as Wodehouse’s Psmith explains). And Psaki’s colleague Marie Harf makes me barf. Together Psaki and Harf give the catastrophic foreign policy of the Obama administration a lighter than air, Valley Girl kind of feel. It’s a novel use of expressive form. Paul Mirengoff explores their weightlessness in the adjacent post. As Paul recounts, Harf came to the defense of Psaki when Bill O’Reilly had the temerity to utter pslightly pscathing words about Psaki

PRETORIA, South Africa — It is one year and seven months since Reeva Steenkamp was shot dead -- six months since her boyfriend, Oscar Pistorius, went on trial accused of murdering her. In a few days´ time, the question at the heart of this case -- whether he knew that it was his girlfriend behind his bathroom door or whether he truly believed he was firing at an intruder -- will be answered. Of course, there is only one man who really knows what happened on Valentine´s Day morning last year. But there is only one woman whose opinion counts:

Mulligans for Obama

While Barack Obama spends so much of his time on golf courses, some 14 million Americans are the ones who want to take a Mulligan. Extrapolating from Obama’s record-low approval rating of 38 percent (via Gallup last week), compared with his 51 percent share of the vote in the 2012 election (he received nearly 66 million votes), that’s how many Americans actually pulled the lever for Obama but now think he’s doing a lousy job. Americans would need to take a Clintonian number of policy Mulligans just to start putting the world and our country back in order. And since the real

It is hard to argue with President Obama´s political calculation that now is not the right time for him to stretch his executive powers and dictate sweeping changes in the nation´s immigration system to include a form of amnesty for millions in the country illegally. Without doubt, that is good news for embattled Democratic senators running for reelection. And, almost certainly, he is correct that whatever he does is "more sustainable" if it is supported by the public. But the fact that he is right on that point makes it even easier to fault him for what has been a clumsy

JERUSALEM—It was the most brazen terror attack Europe had seen since the Second World War—eight Palestinian gunmen slipping at night into the Israeli athletes’ pavilion at the Munich Olympics, shooting two wrestlers who tried to block their way, and taking nine other athletes hostage. In what was ostensibly the first stage of a prisoner exchange involving more than 200 prisoners held by Israel, the Israelis and their captors were helicoptered by German police to a nearby military airfield where they were to board a waiting Lufthansa plane. However, German security forces were waiting in ambush at the airfield that night, 42 years

What to make of the peculiar situation unfolding just across the border in Tijuana, where U.S. Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi languishes in solitary confinement for the crime of mistakenly crossing the border with his personal weapons in his truck on March 31? Nothing to inspire confidence, for certain. In fact, Tahmooressi’s ordeal might just confirm many of our worst fears about the Obama administration. The Tahmooressi story sounds more like a schlocky Hollywood script than a real-life tale. Its protagonist is a decorated Marine veteran of two tours of duty in Afghanistan, honorably discharged in 2012 and diagnosed with a severe case

Why Democrats Can’t Win the House

WASHINGTON — Republicans and Democrats are struggling for control of the Senate in this November’s midterm elections. But there is no real fight for control of the House of Representatives. The Republicans are all but assured of retaining control of the House, despite last fall’s unpopular government shutdown and the party’s dismal ratings. “The Republican hold on the House is the graveyard of the hopes of Democratic policy change,” says Neera Tanden, president of the liberal-leaning Center for American Progress. It has stifled not just President Obama’s agenda, but also the aspirations of his coalition of young, secular and nonwhite voters, who

Obama may say “we don’t have a strategy yet” for beating ISIS. Growing American operations on the ground paint a different picture—one with Iranian hues. The President hasn’t announced his strategy for dealing with ISIS yet, but there is a clear military approach taking shape in Iraq. On an operational level, the military intervention has shown some early success in using U.S. airpower to support local ground forces and halt ISIS’s advances. But the tension between tactics and strategy, methods and goals, is already starting to show. The battle we won yesterday could make it harder to win a war tomorrow. And

President Barack Obama has one person to blame for looking indecisive, dithering and cowed by bungled political calculations: Barack Obama. He’s the one, after all, who strode into the Rose Garden on June 30 to announce that America couldn’t wait forever on immigration reform and pledging to move forward with a set of executive actions “before the end of summer.” He’s the one who spent that afternoon lighting into Republicans in Congress for punting and punting and punting again.
