West Virginia Attorney General
Sues Obama Admin For
Obamacare’s ‘Administrative Fix’

Daily Caller, by Sarah Hurtubise

When it seems like the Obama administration is getting sued left and right for its implementation of the Affordable Care Act, West Virginia’s attorney general is now suing the administration for one of its last-minute changes to the law. Republican Attorney General Patrick Morrisey filed a complaint Tuesday against the Obama administration for its so-called “administrative fix” issued last November, which punted the responsibility for millions of cancelled health insurance plans to states and private insurance companies. President Barack Obama’s repeated promise that anyone who liked their health care plan could keep it became Politifact’s “lie of the year” when

How much better if the White House had said nothing, instead of issuing a fuzzy statement Wednesday condemning the shelling of a UN school for Palestinians in Gaza. It matters little that the National Security Council’s spokeswoman, Bernadette Meehan, did not explicitly accuse Israel of the bombing. Or that she went on to condemn those “hiding weapons in UN facilities.” The world understands the game. On the same day the White House issued its condemnation, the UN secretary general was blaming Israel for a “shameful” attack on “sleeping children.” Now, anything suggesting Israel and Hamas operate on the same moral plane is a victory

From the midweek edition of the Morning Jolt: (Snip) Megan McArdle spits hot fury over the news that Mythology Entertainment is making a movie about the Rathergate memo scandal . . . based upon the book of CBS producer Mary Mapes, who contended that the story was true and that those bloggers in pajamas who kept proving it wrong — including, ahem, me — are all mean and liars and right-wing maniacs and so on. Mapes will be played by Cate Blanchett. Robert Redford is playing the man who reported the story on air, CBS News anchor Dan Rather. I’ll give

Does prostitution ‘make more

Turning tricks makes more financial sense than stocking shelves at Walmart. At least, that´s what some current and former members of the sex industry are arguing. In an article for Nerve.com titled “Why Prostitution Can Make More Sense Than Working at Walmart,” author and ex-escort David Henry Sterry says that he was drawn into the world´s oldest profession when he was a broke 17-year-old in Hollywood. Sterry says he was unable to support himself working at a fried chicken restaurant and was told he could make "real money" — $100 an hour — as a rent boy. "Economically, the only reason a person would

OAK RIDGE — It’s OK to talk Southern and work at a national lab — after all. Oak Ridge National Laboratory has cancelled plans for a “Southern Accent Reduction” class because of objections from lab staff members, some of whom said they were offended by the training opportunity. ORNL’s human resources department early last week distributed a registration notice for the six-week course to be taught by Lisa Scott, “a nationally certified speech pathologist and accent reduction trainer.” Here was the pitch to get employees to sign up for the speech rehab program: “Feel confident in a meeting when you need to speak

FRIDAY HARBOR, Wash.—A stiff breeze blows over sun-dappled waves in this pristine vacation spot just south of the U.S. border with Canada. And on that breeze wafts a scent, the starting point for two detectives about to spend a long day trolling the water for elusive evidence. One rides in a kennel. It is a unique partnership: Elizabeth Seely, a 30-year-old wildlife biologist, and a black Lab named Tucker. Ten years ago, Tucker wandered the streets of North Seattle, undernourished, frightened and likely destined to be euthanized as an unwanted pet. Instead, Tucker got lucky. Discount stores are slowly dying. Yesterday, Dollar Tree announced it would buy Family Dollar, a chain that is in the process of closing hundreds of stores and firing workers. Other discount stores have been struggling as well, writes Heidi Moore at The Guardian. Fashion discounter Loehmann´s filed for bankruptcy, while Wal-Mart´s sales have declined for the past five quarters. "There’s just not enough money deployed by American families to keep all the discount chains in business," Moore writes. Dollar stores saw their heyday during the recession, when middle-class shoppers came to buy smaller, cheaper packages of household necessities like toilet paper. While middle-class shoppers have

Due on the public ballot in August, the tax forms and informational pamphlet that accompanies the measure are some 50 pages long - and both documents must be translated into Yup’ik, Inupiak, Siberian Yupik, Koyukon Athabascan and Gwich’in Athabascan - the local dialects in the region. “The ballot measure to repeal the state’s oil tax cut might be the thorniest issue Alaskans ever vote on, but imagine trying to understand terms like ‘gross revenue exclusion’ and ‘progressivity’ in Yup’ik and other

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Jurors in former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura´s defamation lawsuit against American Sniper author Chris Kyle went home for the day Monday after hours of deliberations during which they told the judge at one point they didn´t think they could reach a unanimous verdict. U.S. District Judge Richard Kyle told them to keep trying, and they continued their fifth day of discussions for roughly four more hours before breaking. Late in the afternoon, attorneys for both sides conferred privately with the judge. They would not say afterward what they discussed but said that the jury would be back

When President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act, its requirement that large employers provide health coverage or pay a penalty seemed to many supporters a key pillar of the effort to guarantee health coverage to Americans. Four years later and after repeated delays, the so-called employer mandate has become something of an orphan, reviled by the law´s opponents and increasingly seen as unnecessary by many of its backers. Twice in the last two years, the Obama administration has put off the penalties, citing difficulties enforcing the mandate. House Republicans plan to sue the president, largely over his suspension of the mandate, saying

President Barack Obama, who in his political dotage is enthusiastically getting in touch with his inner Otto von Bismarck to such an extent that we half expect him to start sporting a walrus mustache and a pickelhaube, on Saturday treated the ailing republic to another lecture on the theme of “economic patriotism,” by which he means an arrangement under which companies adopt tax strategies that maximize the amount of money they send to President Obama and his colleagues to dispose of as they see fit. He demanded that companies “embrace an economic patriotism,” presumably one defined by Barack Obama, rather

Like many on the right, Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer is politically opposed to impeaching President Barack Obama. But on Tuesday, he declared that legally, the rumored White House order granting amnesty to as many as 6 million illegal immigrants “would be an impeachable offense” — and Obama’s talk of impeachment may be a way to preempt that pushback. Krauthammer spoke with Fox News’s Bret Baier on a panel with The Hill’s A.B. Stoddard and Fox News contributor Juan Williams. The group discussed the impeachment buzz swirling around Washington, which most observers agree is being ginned up by Democrats eager for

Israel unleashed its heaviest bombardment in its three-week-old campaign against Hamas in Gaza on Tuesday as the Obama administration battled the growing perception among Israelis that Secretary of State John F. Kerry is a hapless bumbler in search of a cosmetic truce. Diplomatic efforts remained stalled despite a death toll that Palestinian officials said rose above 1,200 on Tuesday. The shadowy leader of the Hamas military wing said his group will not cease fire until an economic embargo is ended and other demands are met. After his latest round of mediation failed to achieve a cease-fire, Mr. Kerry has been

President Obama demanded that Israel agree to a one-sided cease-fire during a heated phone conversation with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to a report aired on Israeli TV Tuesday. Both leaders quickly denounced the purported transcript of their private discussion as fake. But the TV channel that obtained it, state-run Channel 1, stood by its account. In one bitter exchange, Obama declared that Qatar and Turkey — Hamas’ biggest international supporters — would mediate with the terrorists on Israel’s behalf, according to the TV channel. “I trust Qatar and Turkey. That was the one place I felt safe. I can’t go there anymore. I’ll be looking over my shoulder now wondering who’s going to come after me next. And, so don’t think I come out of this unscathed. Inside Hoboken’s combined junior-senior high school is a storage closet. Behind the locked door, some mothballed laptop computers are strewn among brown cardboard boxes. Others are stacked one atop another. Dozens more are stored on mobile computer carts, many of them on their last legs. That’s all that remains from a failed experiment to assign every student a laptop at Hoboken Junior Senior High School. It began five years ago with an unexpected windfall of stimulus money from Washington, D.C., and good intentions to help the district’s students,

Do not eat or drink in front of Muslims, and learn more about their religion. That’s the directive that has gone out to active duty military personnel at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, a Department of Defense medical and graduate school in Bethesda, Md. The brigade commander sent an email to military personnel at the facility last month – just before the start of Ramadan – advising them to show respect to Muslim colleagues. “This is a period of great personal restraint and commitment in addition to renewed focus on worship,” Brigade Commander Col.
