MILWAUKEE-The Wisconsin Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a 2009 law that establishes a registry for same-sex couples, saying it does not violate an amendment to the state´s constitution banning gay marriage. The registry gives registered same-sex couples the right to hospital visits, family medical leave to care for a stricken partner, health benefits under a partner´s insurance and the right to inherit assets when a partner dies. The court said the ban on same-sex marriage did not include a ban on certain rights for same-sex couples. The same-sex marriage ban was approved by Wisconsin voters in 2006. Three years later, the registry was

The purpose of a corporation is its continued existence. Funny you would think that would be the general purpose of the human race. But where a couple can’t move toward that end one must ask why that couple exists. Please, I have little against two folks getting together -- but it is evident that they think of themselves and little else.

POLICE say co-ordinated raids on homes across Brisbane’s south and in Sydney this morning were in response to threats of random attacks on members of the public, including the possible beheading of a random member of the public on a city street and mass shootings. Fifteen people have been detained and one person charged with terrorism offences, following pre-dawn raids across Sydney and Brisbane, as part of a pre-emptive strike amid fears a suspected terror cell was close to launching an attack. A Sydney court heard this afternoon that a man arrested during today’s raids was plotting a public execution on Sydney

ST. Wilson was not obligated to testify, and also has spoken with St. Louis County investigators twice and federal investigators once, the source said. The source said that Wilson had been “cooperative.” A spokesman for St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert P. McCulloch´s office, Ed Magee, said Wednesday that he would not comment on which witnesses have testified. Tiffany Mitchell, a

Bill Clinton has been caught on tape making spontaneous comments about Israel´s prime minister that seem to be in direct conflict with Hillary Clinton´s public stance. The former president´s comments that Bibi Netanyahu was ´not the man´ to make peace with Palestine were captured during a talk with a pro-Palestinian activist in Iowa on Sunday. He and Hillary were both in the state that kicks off the election season with its first in the nation caucus for the Harkin Steak Fry. ´If we don’t force him to have peace, we won’t have peace … Netanyahu is not the guy,´ the

The President of Iraq Fuad Masum has told reporters at Paris conference that Iran should be taking part in the world alliance talks aimed at tackling the threat of Islamic State (IS) insurgents in Iraq. On September 15, the Paris conference addressing the rise of IS militants and support for Iraq started with speeches from Masum and French President Francois Hollande. ‘The solidarity and unity of the international community against IS militants is vital because IS insurgents are threat to the whole world. Since it is a global threat, the destruction of the group is the duty of us all,’ said Hollande. The

BEIJING: China’s industrial production growth slowed sharply to its lowest level for more than five years at 6.9% in August, intensifying concerns for the world’s second-largest economy. The key indicator measuring output at factories, workshops and mines, slumped from a 9% year-on-year expansion in July and was the worst since 5.7% in December 2008, during the global financial crisis. Retail sales, an indicator of consumer spending, rose 11.9% in the same month year-on-year, also down from 12.2% in July. Fixed asset investment, a measure of government spending on infrastructure, expanded 16.5% on-year in the first eight months of 2014. It was below the 17%

Representative Mark Sanford of South Carolina surprised the political world on Friday with his announcement that he was ending his engagement to the woman with whom he had an extramarital affair, the revelation of which stunted his rising-star career five years ago. But in interviews last spring, Mr. Sanford and his fiancée, Maria Belen Chapur, indicated that a relationship born in a stew of infidelity, 21st century politics and Twitter-enhanced cable-news sensationalism had, perhaps inevitably, sustained damage. Over the intervening months the relationship collapsed as the two argued over a wedding date, Ms. Chapur said in an interview on Saturday. Ms. Chapur

The ex–South Carolina governor and current congressman, Appalachian Trail hiker, and perpetual seeker has written a 2,375-word Facebook post about his latest legal battle with ex-wife Jenny Sanford. Its tone, if not its exact content, will be familiar to anyone who has ever heard a middle-aged man self-righteously complain about what a mean, nasty lady his former spouse is, so feel totally free to ignore it on this beautiful Friday afternoon. Really, the only interesting thing in Sanford´s status update is the news that he has broken off

SAN DIEGO — African-American elementary students in California were chronically truant at nearly four times the rate of all students during the last school year, according to a state report released Friday. The report by the California Attorney General´s office is the first time the data has been broken down according to race and income levels. Officials say such data is needed to address the problem. Poverty and suspensions are contributing factors. Overall, more than 250,000 elementary school students missed 10 percent or more of the 2013-2014 school year or roughly 18 or more school days. The absences were highest at the kindergarten and

Judge Thokozile Masipa has ruled that Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius did not murder his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentines´ Day 2013. But she said she would deliver her verdict on a lesser charge, culpable homicide, on Friday. Here is a guide to the judge´s reasoning: Premeditated murder The state argued that Mr Pistorius had had an argument with Ms Steenkamp, after which he deliberately shot her dead. The judge ruled this had not been proved, as there was only circumstantial evidence of an argument - uncorroborated witnesses´ statements. She also dismissed witnesses who said they had heard Ms Steenkamp scream before the shots were fired,

Flashes of disagreement over how to fight the Islamic State are mounting between President Obama and U.S. military leaders, the latest sign of strain in what often has been an awkward and uneasy relationship. Even as the administration has received congressional backing for its strategy, with the Senate voting Thursday to approve a plan to arm and train Syrian rebels, a series of military leaders have criticized the president’s approach against the Islamic State militant group. Retired Marine Gen. James Mattis, who served under Obama until last year, became the latest high-profile skeptic on Thursday, telling the House Intelligence Committee

Devastating. That´s really the only way to describe Politico´s piece on DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. (I hereby nominate her for Worst Week in Washington.) (Editor´s note: Three words -- Joseph. Robinette. Biden.) Based on interviews with DNC staffers -- both former and current -- the piece described Wasserman Schultz as something of a modern-day Tracy Flick: over-eager, disloyal and not shy about promoting her ambitions. It would be fair to say that she sounds like, well, a lot like other politicians. And this would be accurate. But the wholesale bashing of Wasserman Schultz at every level of the party -- White House,

The anti-war president has finally found a way to wag the dog without upsetting his liberal base and war-weary electorate. Despite the beheading of two Americans, establishment of an Islamic caliphate, direct threats to the U.S. homeland, and the destabilization of the entire Middle East, Obama refuses to acknowledge that we are at war with barbaric Islamic jihadists. And he refuses to authorize the requisite boots on the ground. However, Obama just discovered his pre-midterm election method of wagging the dog -- distracting from his incompetent and dangerous response (or lack thereof) to the real threats to America’s national security
