Pope Francis: Turn Off
the TV During Dinner

NBC News, by Staff

Pope Francis has come up with 10 tips for a happier life, and one of them is to turn off the TV during dinner. In the interview with Argentine weekly Viva, the pontiff says staying plugged-in during meals stops families from communicating with each other. The pope also says that parents have to make time to play with their children and enjoy art and culture, according to a Catholic News Service translation of the interview. The Roman Catholic leader also says people should treat Sundays like family holidays, avoid criticizing others, steer clear of religious proselytizing, and work for peace. His

That´s the way it was when I was growing up. Everyone had to be home for dinner; no television; telephone wasn´t answered.

It´s also the way it was at my parent´s house when we went back to visit.

Really a very pleasant way to live.

Well, duh....

...but on the other hand, isn´t there another message of slightly greater import that he should be spreading?

I put my remote away almost 3 years ago and don´t miss tv at all.
Take back your life and turn it off and leave it off. You´ll be glad you did.

Very ironic words from Pope Cheech.

Every local restaurant in Italy has one or more TVs on in its dining room. Watching TV during dinner has become an embedded Italian tradition.

Good luck with that one, Cheech.

#4 - interesting comment. I didn´t see TV sets in any restaurant when I was in Italy, but I did see large groups of people enjoying each other´s company during dinner.

It may be a regional thing here - but my in-laws are Italian - no television at dinner.

You do realize that this is NBC´s selective reporting of a sentence or two in an article from an Argentine magazine.

In an interview published in part in the Argentine weekly "Viva" July 27, the pope listed his Top 10 tips for bringing greater joy to one´s life:

And what does Pope Francis think about what has happened to the Christian community and their churches in Mosul?

Read in a biography by Tad Szulc that Pope John Paul prayed at least seven hours a day; sometimes he prayed on his face all night long in his papal chapel. Look how much he accomplished - a lot we do not even know about.

I think it is nice that Francis is so convivial and likes giving interviews and all, but he gave two interviews (one of them his "Who am I to judge?" interview) to a 90 year-old journalist who did not take notes or use a tape recorder. By the way, the 90 year-old journalist is an atheist. I wondered if he prayed before making that choice.

This world needs a transformation. Francis should move to the papal apartments where John Paul lived and get away from the priest hostel where he can be convivial. We need him to pray seven hours a day too. The world is in deep trouble. And anyone who watches t.v. during dinnertime is just going to continue doing so - so silly.

Just read Pope Francis´ "Ten Tips for a Happier Life" - sounds a bit New Agey for me, especially the Live and Let Live maxim. John Paul wasn´t afraid to tell the young people that there are "do´s" and "don´ts" and the young people loved him because they knew he loved them.

Maybe this a a prelude to his encyclical on the environment which I am sure many special interests are panting to read. Sometimes I think that Francis has a public relations office and that scares me, and I am a Catholic so I guess I am sort of opinionated, but mostly I am worried.

Forgive third post, but I just read a fascinating article on the Pope´s favorite interviewer (Three interviews to date), and I think it is worth reading.

Article entitled: "Who is Papal Interviewer - Eugenio Scalfari" - July 30, 2014, by Hillary White, LifeSite News.

I cannot imagine why Francis would choose to be interviewed three times by this man? Can you imagine John Paul or Benedict allowing themselves to be interviewed even once by Scalfari?

PARIS — France´s summer is fast becoming a memory, and so is one of its iconic beach sights: the topless woman. As few as 2 percent of French women under 35 now say they want to bare their breasts, according to an Elle magazine poll this summer. It´s a far cry from the once-ubiquitous scenes of semi-nudity on the French Riviera, epitomized by 1960s blond bombshell Brigitte Bardot. "It´s seen as vulgar. People are more prudish these days," explains 60-year old Muriel Trazie, keeping her breasts out of the public eye while sunning herself on Paris Plages, the French capital´s summer beach. Sandra

Legal immigration is a vital and necessary resource to enhance our economy and culture. Illegal immigration is an affront to those who follow the law. Presidents give a lot of speeches, and most of them don’t mean very much. They “urge,” they “call on,” and they “challenge”—and, for the most part, their messages bounce off their intended audiences. Congress doesn’t fund the program or balance the budget; the American people carry on wasting energy and dropping out of school. But there are occasions when presidential words are not mere puffs of breath and waves of sound—and today was one of those occasions. Ever since Vladimir Putin launched his war on Ukraine, the question has been whether the United States would really act to defend its new
