Ebola: Liberia shuts
schools to tackle outbreak

Liberia´s government has announced that it is closing down all schools across the country to stop the spread of the deadly Ebola virus. Some communities would be placed under quarantine as well, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf said. Non-essential government workers will be sent home for 30 days and the army deployed to enforce the measures. The number of people killed by the virus in West Africa has now reached 672, according to new UN figures. The BBC´s West Africa correspondent Thomas Fessy says treatment facilities have reportedly been overwhelmed in the Liberian capital Monrovia.

I wonder how they know the incubation period ends at 20 days. I´ve heard cases of people having other viruses (like HIV) for years, and not showing symptoms.

Layman´s question: Won´t the effectiveness of closing schools and also sending many workers home depend on what those people do during their extra time?

The public health gurus no doubt have studied that question.

It is unsettling to see such a disease. Medicine has suppressed so many of the old contagious killers that we tend to be complacent.

I really hate to mention it but....when I lived in Corpus Christi, cargo ships & tankers were a common sight unloading at the port with "Liberia" plainly marked on them. I remember because I wasn´t sure where Liberia was on the African continent. Wonder how many ports they visit and are the crew members allowed leave after the long trip crossing the ocean?
Just wondering.........

#1 - Ebola is an extremely virulent pathogen. It does not smolder like the HIV virus, it replicates extremely rapidly within the body - think wildfire - and kills the host within days. It completely disrupts the body´s coagulation systems and the person essentially bleeds to death internally and externally. It´s a horrific disease . The only way to survive is with expert critical care which is most likely challenging in countries where outbreaks are occuring. Recommend watching the recent movie "Contagion" - it will scare the bejeebers out of you.

No one has considered Apple a serious data company, until now. For years, Apple has offered Internet services like email and online calendars. But Tuesday, with the introduction of health-monitoring technology and a new service that will allow people to buy things wirelessly with some Apple devices, the Cupertino, Calif., company positioned itself as a caretaker of valuable personal information, like credit card numbers and heart rates. (Snip)Against that background, Apple faces two threats to its new services: one from hackers always looking for clever ways to steal financial information, and another from regulators increasingly interested in ensuring that information gleaned

It really is quite amazing to watch how easily the people around Ferguson Missouri are manipulated by local members of the professional grievance community, and peer pressure. Dozens of residents proud to be arrested including some younger people. Yesterday they tried to block the Interstate (I-70) but were stopped by police and law enforcement. Of course the Saint Louis media is giddy with the confrontation(s) helping to sell newspapers and generate viewership. However, a review of the people at the center of the protests and you find they are almost the exact same people from the prior evening’s City Council Meeting

A former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Robert Mueller III, will lead a probe into the National Football League´s handling of former Baltimore Ravens player Ray Rice´s domestic violence case, the league said on Wednesday. The announcement comes within hours of a report by the Associated Press that a law enforcement official sent a video to the league in April that showed Rice knocking out his then-fiancee in an elevator. The official wanted the NFL to have the video before deciding how to punish Rice, the agency said, adding that the official spoke on condition of anonymity.

It´s not clear at this time who at the league office actually saw the video, but someone definitely saw it. The AP was given access to a 12-second voicemail from

Instead they couched their perspective on the information inside an article discussing Syria and ISIS: [...] Obama’s upcoming speech comes as two Americans were murdered and grisly images and stories of the terrorist group needlessly killing enemies have emerged from Iraq and Syria. So far, Americans are not happy with how Obama has addressed the ISIS situation. The CNN/ORC poll shows that only

The St. Louis County prosecutor’s office is taking an unusual approach with grand jury members who are weighing evidence against the police officer who shot and killed 18-year-old Michael Brown last month, experts and county officials said. Instead of telling grand jury members what charges they believe police officer Darren Wilson should face, they are leaving it open-ended for now and involving the grand jury as co-investigators. The prosecutor’s office is also presenting evidence to the grand jury as soon as it receives it, rather than waiting until the St. Louis County Police Department and the FBI have completed their investigations.

WASHINGTON--US President Barack Obama will tell the American people on Wednesday night that he plans to order strikes against Islamic State forces in both Syria and Iraq until the group is ultimately destroyed. The president´s plan includes additional support for opposition militias in Syria vetted by the United States, which will serve as a ground force complementing America´s air campaign. [Snip] The "comprehensive strategy," as described by one White House official, will involve "US military action and support for the forces combating ISIL [Islamic State] on the ground–both the opposition in Syria and a new, inclusive Iraqi government."

As we suspected, President Obama tried in his Wednesday-night speech to make it sound like he was doing something new when he, in fact, he is not. Moreover, in describing his response, he made plain that he doesn’t take the threat to the homeland seriously. For a threat his advisers say is greater than that posed by al-Qaeda after 2001, he proposed measures suitable for Yemen and Somalia. No, really — that’s the plan. For starters, the president doesn’t believe the Islamic State is a current threat to the U.S.: “So ISIL poses a threat to the people of Iraq

Rarely has a president faced a greater challenge in establishing his credibility for a new foreign-policy move than Barack Obama did in his nationally televised speech tonight. A CNN poll earlier this week found that just 30 percent of voters thought Obama had presented a clear plan for fighting the Islamic State. While Obama now pledges to ask Congress to train and aid Syrian rebels who would fight the group, voters remember that he backed similar plans in Syria in 2013, when his advisers saw Syrian president Bashar Assad as the major threat. Throughout his presidency, President Obama has emphasized one point while talking about Islamist extremists: They are not practicing Islam, he has said, they are perverting it. He took that a step further Wednesday night. While announcing that he´s expanding the campaign against the Islamic State extremist group into Syria, Obama said flatly that this group, which is trying to install a caliphate in the Middle East, "is not Islamic."
