Does prostitution ‘make more
sense’ than working at Walmart?

New York Daily News, by Victoria Taylor

Turning tricks makes more financial sense than stocking shelves at Walmart. At least, that´s what some current and former members of the sex industry are arguing. In an article for Nerve.com titled “Why Prostitution Can Make More Sense Than Working at Walmart,” author and ex-escort David Henry Sterry says that he was drawn into the world´s oldest profession when he was a broke 17-year-old in Hollywood. Sterry says he was unable to support himself working at a fried chicken restaurant and was told he could make "real money" — $100 an hour — as a rent boy. "Economically, the only reason a person would

Using this logic, robing banks, stealing purses and dealing drugs makes more sense than working at Walmart. If you believe that prostitution is immoral behavior it is no different than engaging in these other forms of immorality. I could add being a press secretary the Obama administration but since that is just another form of prostitution it would be redundant.

I think liberals are coming to the grips with the unsustainability of the welfare state through taxation and government transfer payments. The tactics now, with the meme that every job has to pay a "living wage" and the flight of companies to more tax-friendly locales is part of the strategy to shift the onus of welfare to the private sector.

Reductio ad depravum, or something like that.

If a person nullifies their humanity and morality in favor of becoming an object to be "maintained", then... Yes, prostitution becomes good enough for the person they have made of themselves.

FTA: "According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, the poverty line for a family of four is $23,850 a year. A Walmart employee working 37 hours a week at $11.83 an hour doesn´t clear that number."

Yes, but one working 40 or even 39 hours a week does clear that number. If you are only willing to work 37 hours a week, you should not wonder why you are below the poverty line.

And just under $2000/month is considered poverty in the U.S.?

Here´s real poverty (from the WorldBank.org website):
"In all (worldwide), 2.4 billion people lived on less than US $2 a day in 2010."

U.S. poverty rate = $65/day (not counting the numerous government entitlements and other charities available).

At the supermarket near his home in central Virginia, Tom Burford likes to loiter by the display of Red Delicious. He waits until he spots a store manager. Then he picks up one of the glossy apples and, with a flourish, scrapes his fingernail into the wax: T-O-M. “We can’t sell that now,” the manager protests. To which Burford replies, in his soft Piedmont drawl: “That’s my point.” Burford, who is 79 years old, is disinclined to apple destruction. His ancestors scattered apple seeds in the Blue Ridge foothills as far back as 1713, and he grew up with more than 100 types

Black men. Fellas. Brothers. Stop complaining about Ray Rice’s (much deserved and yet woefully insufficient) punishment. Right now. When we are beaten, slain and otherwise persecuted, our sisters, our mothers, and our women stand for us with nearly unilateral, unwavering support. They march for us. They cry out our names and demand justice. They support us in our moments of quiet fear when we shed the bitter tears of self-doubt and fatigue. Why aren’t we doing the same? Stephen A. Smith wasn’t alone in blaming black women for the violence against them. Too many black men are making shameful attempts to explain away the

With all of the other news ricocheting around the media and social networks, this may seem like a sleeper of a story, but it’s a bigger deal than one might think — literally as well as figuratively. Last night, House Republicans unveiled their proposed continuing resolution that will fund government well past the midterm elections, and it won’t make conservatives like Rep. Jeb Hensarling too happy. The proposal calls for a simple extension of current funding, plus some extra cash to deal with the Ebola outbreak in Africa and more flexibility on the use of cash for border security. Otherwise,

In the latest round of polls, President Obama´s approval ratings are lowest on the two issues that once were strengths—foreign policy and immigration. In this week´s ABC News/Washington Post poll, only 31 percent of Americans approved of his handling of immigration, an issue that he recently hoped to wield as a political weapon against the Republican Party. And the same survey showed his approval on international affairs at just 38 percent—the lowest point of his presidency and an 8-point drop from late July—even as he catered to the creeping isolationist sentiment in the country. To the White House, these numbers must

Martha Coakley may have won the Massachusetts’ Democratic governor primary, but her slim six-point margin of victory isn’t doing much to assuage Democrats worried about another 2010. Coakley took 42 percent of the vote to Steve Grossman’s 36 percent and Don Berwick’s 21 percent on Tuesday’s election. Coakley’s six-point margin is a rather uncomfortable primary win, particularly given that Coakley had a 20-point lead in The Boston Globe poll as recently as two weeks ago. The margin is bringing up memories of her failed 2010 Senate race, when Coakley lost to Scott Brown in a race to replace the longtime seat of

The first question most callers ask, says Katie Ray-Jones, president of the National Domestic Violence Hotline, isn’t “How do I leave him?” The first question is typically, “How do I get him to stop hitting me?” It is not unusual for domestic violence victims such as Janay Palmer to stand by their man, Ray-Jones said.
