House approves VA reform bill
Politico, by Lauren French

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 7/30/2014 6:33:38 PM

The House on Wednesday approved legislation 420-5 to drastically reform the Department of Veterans Affairs. In a strong bipartisan vote, lawmakers backed the $17 billion compromise bill crafted by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Jeff Miller (R-Fla.). The Senate is expected to sign off on the legislation later this week. The bill gives the VA secretary new authority to fire senior employees accused of mismanagement and gives veterans the ability to leave the VA to seek medical care of they have waited longer than 14 days for treatment. The agency has been widely criticized in the wake of reports that it manipulated data on its wait times,

Comments:
Please look on this as a big win for veterans, especially since it had such a huge bipartisan support. At least the money didn´t go towards 0bama´s illegal alien invasion.

The VA already has a huge budget, what is the specific purpose of the 17Billion? I am a veteran in the Atlanta area and am very happy with the service and all employees I see are very professional. From where I sit the problem of the culture within the VA must be mid to upper management.

This sounds good, I only hope it works the way it is described. It will provide competition for the VA Hospitals and care providers. If the veterans aren´t served in fourteen days they can go elsewhere. I think that is much better than the current situation, just hope there aren´t lots of other hoops the vets have to jump through to have this happen. Do I trust the Congress? No.

The money is probably for more bonuses !
If the House were serious about this, they would give vouchers to all Vets and turn over the facilities to private hospitals or shut them down.

Mrs C is a nurse and tells me this is not realistic. They cant hire many more doctors or nurses because there aren´t any. There aren´t enough for the demand now, and far fewer are getting into the medical profession (she says) because of Obamacare. Nurses are understaffed everywhere, and the worse it gets the more hours they have to put in. They eventually burn out and quit.

This is just more wasted money.

A necessary bill, virtually nothing would improve w/o it. How much will get improved with it is the question.

The bureaucrats will now begin molding every single provision into a benefit for themselves. About that they will win some and lose some.

A good outcome ultimately depends on diligent Congressional and WH oversight. And we know how well that usually goes.

#6 There are registered nurses looking for jobs, trust me on that. Lots burn out, so true. However, many new grads with four year degrees are finding it harder to get secure fulltime positions. I know for a fact we tend to be understaffed too but it´s because hospitals have learned that 1 will do the work of 2. The VA generally have plenty of applicants and they will fill those jobs.

...so true that this is wasted money. No management change. Nobody was fired and whistleblowers are being mistreated. Labor will see to it that that new power Congress asks for to be able to fire incompetent workers will be taken out of the final bill.

Australia raises terror alert level to ´high´

Australia has raised its terror alert level to "high" for the first time since the national alert system was introduced in 2003. According to the four-level system, a reading of "high" means a terrorist attack "is likely," however the country´s Prime Minister Tony Abbott said no specific threat had been made. "This does not mean a terror attack is imminent, we have no specific intelligence of particular plots. What we do have is intelligence that there are people with the intent and capability to mount attacks," Abbott said at a press conference in Canberra on Friday.

Berlin - President Obama´s declaration of war against the terrorist group known as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria marks a decisive break in the American constitutional tradition. Nothing attempted by his predecessor, George W. Bush, remotely compares in imperial hubris. Mr. Bush gained explicit congressional consent for his invasions (Snip) Mr. Obama may rightly be frustrated by gridlock in Washington, but his assault on the rule of law is a devastating setback for our constitutional order. A man jumped the perimeter fence of the White House on Thursday, jangling nerves on the 13th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Witnesses said he was quickly apprehended by two armed Secret Service officers who had scrambled to intercept him. The White House complex, as is standard procedure in such incidents — which are common — was locked down and people were prevented from entering and leaving the grounds. US President Barack Obama was not at home at the time because he was taking part in an event elsewhere in Washington to mark the anniversary of the 2001 attacks.

As we suspected, President Obama tried in his Wednesday-night speech to make it sound like he was doing something new when he, in fact, he is not. Moreover, in describing his response, he made plain that he doesn’t take the threat to the homeland seriously. For a threat his advisers say is greater than that posed by al-Qaeda after 2001, he proposed measures suitable for Yemen and Somalia. No, really — that’s the plan. Rarely has a president faced a greater challenge in establishing his credibility for a new foreign-policy move than Barack Obama did in his nationally televised speech tonight. President Obama just announced that he is bringing a counter-terrorism strategy to an insurgency fight. He was at pains to repeat the phrase “counter-terror” four times in a short speech. Noting that ISIL is not a state (partly because the international community thankfully does not recognize it), he declared, “ISIL is a terrorist organization, pure and simple. And it has no vision other than the slaughter of all who stand in its way.” Neither of those sentences, unfortunately, is true.
