Ever since the weekend, I´ve been looking at the photo on the right. It´s a close-up of a picture that forms part of Richard K´s photographic scrapbook of the annual "al-Quds Day" rally in my home town of Toronto. "Al-Quds" is the Arab name for Jerusalem, and this event, if not quite as big as the LGBTQWERTY parade, enjoys a similar official imprimatur: the Government of Ontario gives permission for it to be held at Queen´s Park, home of the provincial parliament. At this year´s shindig, Gaza was the big grievance, and there was a lot of undisguised Jew-hatred in the

Classic Steyn. Classic.

"I wonder if any of the non-Muslim Jew-haters out and about on Saturday looked at that Khomeini portrait and felt a little queasy. You sign on for a little light anti-Semitism - getting your pension fund to divest from Israel, which is the 21st century equivalent of getting your country club to nix the Jews - and next thing you know you´re standing next to a fellow who´s hot for the Ayatollah. And at that point, if you´ve got any sense of self-preservation, you´ll realize it´s not really about the Jews anymore, it´s about you."

As always, Steyn´s column is worth reading all the way to the bottom. As an appetizer, the following excerpt is too delicious not to post.

First, Steyn quotes yet another They-Built-Us revisionist apologist:

"The Muslim slaves of antebellum America left some of their culture behind. Many musicologists believe that the American blues and jazz traditions owe much to West African Muslim folk music, especially the beautiful West African Muslim songs sung with the 21-string kora"

-- and then adds his own bemused coda:

"I knew most western literature was Muslim - from Sheikh Speare to Louisa May al-Cott - but the jazz and blues thing was new to me. Must remember to check out some of those great little jazz joints in Riyadh next time I´m there. Incidentally, if you woke up this morning and your sheep done left you, the Ayatollah Khomeini recommends you sing a 12-baa blues."

I was in Toronto in ´95. I liked the city for its cosmopolitan atmosphere and cultural flavor. It was a safe city, too. I don´t know how it is now, reading about all this business about the Muslim population surge.

Toronto´s crime scene is still the property of the vicious Caribbean criminals the leftards so gleefully imported a few decades ago. But the muzzies are next up, with that leftard dream team, the Gypsies also contributing in their own special way.

John Kerry has assembled a three-person team to lead the State Department’s efforts against ISIS. Two of the members — Gen. John Allen and Brett McGurk — seem unobjectionable. The third, Anne Patterson, is another matter. In announcing her central role, Kerry praised Patterson as “one of our nation’s top diplomats deeply respected in the region.” But Patterson is not respected in Egypt, where she served as ambassador during the period when the Muslim Brotherhood was in power. Bridget Johnson at PJ Media reminds us that Patterson stood firmly behind the Brotherhood as it persecuted opponents and attempted to consolidate

German Chancellor Angela Merkel declared that in Germany, multiculturalism has "utterly failed." Both Australia´s ex-prime minister John Howard and Spain´s ex-prime minister Jose Maria Aznar reached the same conclusion about multiculturalism in their countries. British Prime Minister David Cameron has warned that multiculturalism is fostering extremist ideology and directly contributing to homegrown Islamic terrorism. UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage said the United Kingdom´s push for multiculturalism has not united Britons but pushed them apart. It has allowed for Islam to emerge despite Britain´s Judeo-Christian culture. Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair said the roots of violent Islamism are not

New York Jewish and anti-Jihadi activists are planning what they hope will be a massive demonstration outside of the Metropolitan Opera on September 22, 2014, at 4:30pm, when “The Death of Klinghoffer,” composed by John Adams with a libretto by Alice Goodman, has its first performance. Although I am a serious opera fan and a strong believer in the First Amendment, I will be among them. Here’s why.  The libretto presents a false and defamatory narrative of Jews and America; depicts an entirely untrue, unbalanced, and maliciously immoral history of the founding of the state of Israel-- especially in Penny Woolcock’s filmed version of the opera which

We have a profoundly serious problem of illegal immigration, but we also have a problem of legal immigration, Unfortunately, it is a problem that can barely be discussed. Is there anyone who thinks the continued stream of Muslim immigration from countries with active jihadist groups is a good idea? Canadian poet and essayist David Solway broadly raises the problem of Muslim immigration in the PJ Media column “The new colonizers.” I think he gives voice to reasonable concerns in the back of many minds:

Australia became the first country to detail troop numbers and aircraft for a U.S.-led coalition fighting Islamic State militants in Iraq, as Washington drums up support for global action to counter the terrorist threat. Australia Prime Minister Tony Abbott said on Sunday a 600-strong force comprising some 400 airforce personnel and 200 special forces soldiers would be deployed to a U.S. military base in the United Arab Emirates. A number of countries have responded to U.S. President Barack Obama´s call to join a coalition against Islamic State, but Australia is the first to publicly provide specific troop numbers and

In January, President Barack Obama dismissed the Islamic State (ISIS) as merely a “JV team.” Last week, Obama reversed that position and told NBC News ISIS is “not a JV team.” Similarly, two weeks ago Obama said the Islamic State can be shrunk to “a manageable problem.” Then on Friday, as NBC News reported, “The Obama administration said for the first time Friday that the United States is ‘at war’ with ISIS militants.”    Given the Administration’s contradictory and muddled messages, here, then, are seven ISIS facts:  1. Scotland will vote "No" in next week´s referendum. But I wish it were otherwise. Here are some reasons why I urge the Scots to vote "yes" to independence. 1. David Cameron will lose his job as prime minister. Not only will this be extremely satisfying when it finally happens but it will also provide weeks of excellent sport as he strives, desperately, to ignore the clamour from his backbenchers (and half his frontbenchers) demanding that he does the decent thing and resign. How did Iowa state senator Joni Ernst become a threat to Harry Reid’s Democratic majority in the U.S. Senate? “The Democrats have thrown everything but the kitchen sink at Ms. Ernst, and at the best this race is a tie, it’s still a pure toss-up in what should be a marginally Democrat environment in Iowa,” a GOP pollster told NRO. This race was not supposed to challenge Democrats or drain their resources. “I was confident Rep. Senator Jeff Sessions (R., Ala.), the ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee, delivered a speech on the Senate floor Wednesday evening about Senate Democrats’ refusal to support legislation to block the president’s proposed executive actions on immigration policy, and the interests supporting amnesty. Following is an adapted version of his remarks.
Earlier this week I spoke about the president’s promise that he would issue an executive amnesty to 5 or 6 million people. The planned amnesty would include work permits, photo IDs, and Social Security numbers for millions of people who illegally entered the U.S., illegally overstayed their visas, or defrauded U.S. immigration authorities. The Senate Democratic conference has supported and enabled the president’s unlawful actions and blocked every effort to stop them. (Editor´s note: Three words -- Joseph. Robinette. Biden.) Based on interviews with DNC staffers -- both former and current -- the piece described Wasserman Schultz as something of a modern-day Tracy Flick: over-eager, disloyal and not shy about promoting her ambitions.
