Alaska’s language challenge: translating tax

Washington Times, by Jennifer Harper

Alaska is currently wrestling with a native language challenge: how to translate the state’s longest tax measure for local populations? Due on the public ballot in August, the tax forms and informational pamphlet that accompanies the measure are some 50 pages long - and both documents must be translated into Yup’ik, Inupiak, Siberian Yupik, Koyukon Athabascan and Gwich’in Athabascan - the local dialects in the region. “The ballot measure to repeal the state’s oil tax cut might be the thorniest issue Alaskans ever vote on, but imagine trying to understand terms like ‘gross revenue exclusion’ and ‘progressivity’ in Yup’ik and other

Holy cow!! and it was thought Canada had it tough. Well, if this is true then Sarah is nominated now the smartest women, most intelligent woman ever born (Knocking Thighs and Cackles off the pedestal) Sarah must have a very high IQ if she is able to speak and understand all those languages. Just an observation, whether true or not.

Rand Paul, sources say, will stump for the Republican candidate in nearly every close Senate race between now and Election Day in November: for Thom Tillis in North Carolina, Joni Ernst in Iowa, Pat Roberts in Kansas, Terri Lynn Land in Michigan, and Ed Gillespie in Virginia. Paul was in New Hampshire campaigning with Scott Brown and the state GOP two weeks ago. “We are getting an insane amount of requests from everyone who’s running,” a Paul adviser says. North Carolina is the most interesting stop for Paul, who endorsed, contributed to, and campaigned with one of Tillis’s challengers, Greg Brannon,

The 2008 vice-presidential candidate and half-term governor mixes up directions and fires up her grizzlies at the Values Voter Summit. Had John McCain been elected president in 2008, Sarah Palin still may not have ever set foot in the White House…because she wouldn’t have been able to find it. On Friday afternoon, the failed reality-television star and one-time VP nominee materialized in Washington, clad in a leather blazer, to deliver a speech to the crowd at the Values Voter Summit—an annual social-conservative confab held at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, a sprawling, gilded maze of a place that is rumored to be haunted

As we count down Eric Holder’s greatest hits, the first image that comes to the mind of many Americans isn’t that of Brian Terry, or of Black Panthers outside polling places, but of a screaming child staring down the barrel of a rifle. On April 22, 2000, just before dawn, U.S federal agents executed a full-blown raid on the home of five year old Elian Gonzalez, seizing the child and setting in motion procedures to send Elian and his father back to Cuba. I was only a freshman in high school when this happened, but I remember seeing news stories about what

Seriously, take a look:(Snip for graphic) The deletion demand was made on Friday morning by user “Cwobeel,” who claimed that The Federalist “does not pass the threshold for notability.” The same user ironically describes himself in his Wikipedia profile as “a member of the Association of Inclusionist Wikipedians.” Really? Government employees and politicians get preferential treatment from the Transportation Security Administration simply for being government employees and politicians. Meanwhile, everyone else is stuck in an “aviation security caste system” based on dozens of watchlists compiled by the TSA, FBI and other law enforcement agencies, along with a secret formula the TSA believes can sort passengers based on hypothetical analyses and conjecture. That’s the conclusion drawn by Hugh Handeyside, a staff attorney for the ACLU, who reviewed a recent audit of the TSA, every traveler’s favorite government pseudo-police force. In case you missed it, Watchdog reported last week the GAO says the TSA

The Texas doctor accused of poisoning her lover has been found guilty of aggravated assault. Dr. Ana Gonzalez-Angulo was charged after prosecutors say she spiked Dr. George Blumenschein´s coffee in 2013 with ethylene glycol, a sweet-tasting chemical found in antifreeze. “I am very grateful; justice has been served," Blumenschein said later at the sentencing phase of the trial. Gonzalez-Angulo and Blumenschein both worked as oncologists at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Blumenschein´s girlfriend had testified in court this week that he suspected his mistress, Gonzalez-Angulo, was responsible but that he was afraid to contact authorities. Evette

When Kay Hagan voted for President Barack Obama’s 2009 economic stimulus package, the Democratic senator hailed it as “the best way forward for working families across North Carolina.” One of the families that later benefited is her own. JDC Manufacturing, a company co-owned by the Democratic senator’s husband, Chip, received nearly $390,000 in federal grants for energy projects and tax credits created by the 2009 stimulus law, according to public records and information provided by the company. Hagan’s GOP opponent, statehouse Speaker Thom Tillis, voted in 2010 to allow the state to participate in the federal renewable energy tax credit

I’ve been mostly ignoring the various “Romney 2016!” trial balloons floated by various parties over the last six months or so (including by some of my dear friends, alas), but now that someone as sober and well-informed as Byron York has weighed in with a “this could happen” column, it’s worth saying something about why the possibility keeps coming up. Part of the answer can be found in Henry Olsen’s helpful analysis, from earlier this year, of how exactly Republican presidential primaries tend to shake out. Olsen offered a four-group typology of G.O.P. primary voters — secular conservatives, religious conservatives, moderate

We’re being had. Again. For six years, President Obama has endeavored to will the country into accepting two pillars of his alternative national-security reality. First, he claims to have dealt decisively with the terrorist threat, rendering it a disparate series of ragtag jayvees. Second, he asserts that the threat is unrelated to Islam, which is innately peaceful, moderate, and opposed to the wanton “violent extremists” who purport to act in its name. Now, the president has been compelled to act against a jihad that has neither ended nor been “decimated.” The jihad, in fact, has inevitably intensified under his counterfactual

Even though Republicans may take back the Senate by running against amnesty, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush pushed amnesty legislation while stumping for North Carolina Republican Senate candidate Thom Tillis on Wednesday. And even though a recent Gallup poll found that illegal immigration is now the top concern among Republicans, Bush said that if immigration reform is "framed in that way, I don’t think there’s a big debate in the Republican Party about the need to do this."

Of all the malfeasances of William Jefferson Clinton the one that would have most justified a removal from office was not the Monica hijinks, even with the attendant lying under oath and absurd parsings of the word “is,” but the pardoning of Marc Rich — the billionaire international commodities trader and mammoth contributor to, er, Clinton. With the mid-term elections weeks away, many conservatives are confronting a difficult choice. Assuming there are no solid conservatives on the ballot, do we vote for establishment candidates? When the U.S. military strikes, its leaders often choose colorful code names for the operation that sometimes stick in history, like Operation Overlord or Rolling Thunder or Desert Storm. Not this time. The U.S.-led air campaign against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria doesn´t have a name. "I know of no plans at this point to name it," Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby said Thursday. Since World War II, almost every U.S. military operation, large and small, has had a code name. And that name usually sticks when veterans talk about the conflicts in which they participated, such
