NCAA takes $70M first steps to

The NCAA agreed on Tuesday to help athletes with head injuries in a proposed settlement of a class-action lawsuit that college sports’ governing body touted as a major step forward but that critics say doesn’t go nearly far enough. The deal, filed in US District Court in Chicago, calls for the NCAA to toughen return-to-play rules for players who receive head blows and create a $70 million fund to pay for thousands of current and former athletes to undergo testing to determine whether they suffered brain trauma while playing football and other contact sports. Stick a fork in the NFL and College Football...Progressives and the Lawyers have sealed the deal along with constant ESPN coverage to replace football with kickball......Within 5/8 years it will be NFL light featuring no tackle..(aka flag football) Say what you want about Rush, he predicted this years ago..

Okay, the idiots win. I give up football season entirely. Let the girls play, bring in the gays, take the gut´s out of it, put big old inflatable helmets on the players, let them wear the very distracting pink little breast cancer shoes and gloves. The game is a huge stinking pile of scatological samples now.

No seriously, I´m taking next season off entirely---I will refuse to watch any of the games, including the Super Bowl! It´s just gotten way too silly.

SAN DIEGO — A former employee of the Department of Motor Vehicles was sentenced Friday to three years in prison for his role in a $50,000 conspiracy to sell driver’s licenses to motorists who either failed the tests or declined to take them altogether. Jeffrey Bednarek is the last of five DMV workers to be sentenced in the corruption scheme. He pleaded guilty in January to conspiracy to commit bribery and identification document fraud, bribery and witness tampering. U.S. District Court Judge Cathy Bencivengo chastised him for putting the public at risk by issuing licenses to drivers who have no

A record 92,269,000 Americans 16 and older did not participate in the labor force in August, as the labor force participation rate matched a 36-year low of 62.8 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The labor force participation rate has been as low as 62.8 percent in six of the last twelve months, but prior to last October had not fallen that low since 1978. The IRS targeting scandal has all the intrigue of a political thriller. First it was the missing e-mails, then destroyed hard drives and now a missing person in the form of one-time Lois Lerner underling Andrew Strelka. On September 3, Republican Congressman Jim Jordan sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder demanding to know, by a Friday deadline, the information on the whereabouts of Strelka. In the letter Jordan suggested the Department of Justice was hiding Strelka from the House Oversight Committee investigating the IRS-targeting scandal. Incredibly, this accusation has yet to be covered by any of the Big

He is gay. He´s a Republican. He wants to get married. During his time as a spokesperson for the Republican Party and GOP candidates, James Richardson noted that "never once did I write that I am gay." That changed with the publication of a column by Richardson in Thursday´s Washington Post that openly proclaims his sexuality. (Snip) Richardson once worked for the more moderate Republican Jon Huntsman, who has embraced same-sex marriage. But he also worked for candidates adamantly against same sex marriage, including former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour´s short-lived presidential exploratory campaign

The U.S. Justice Department on Thursday denied media reports that federal authorities were investigating the Chicago Police Department over shootings by its officers. The reports were prompted by a letter that appeared earlier this week on a popular police blog in which a lawyer who represents Chicago cops accused of misconduct said the FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office were probing police shootings of unarmed individuals. But in answer to a reporter’s question at a news conference in Washington, a top aide to Attorney General Eric Holder denied knowledge of any investigation of the department. “We do not have any investigations into

American employers hired fewer workers than forecast in August and the jobless rate dropped because people left the workforce, bolstering those on the Federal Reserve who want to be more deliberate in removing monetary stimulus. The 142,000 advance in payrolls was smallest this year and lower than the most pessimistic estimate in a Bloomberg survey of economists after a revised 212,000 gain in July, figures from the Labor Department showed today in Washington. The median projection called for a 230,000 increase. The unemployment rate fell to 6.1 percent last month from 6.2 percent, reflecting a drop in joblessness among teenagers.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney can be a polarizing figure even six years out of office. The Wyoming State Bar invited Cheney, a prominent Republican with deep Wyoming ties, to be keynote speaker at its annual convention next week. Some lawyers are objecting, both to Cheney´s selection and to how the bar announced his appearance. The state bar is a quasi-governmental entity that administers the legal profession using some taxpayer money. In its announcement of Cheney´s speech, it published an unedited biography submitted by Cheney in which he criticized President Obama, saying he weakened the United States´ security posture. President Obama’s approval rating has sunk to an administration-low 38 percent, Gallup pollsters said Thursday. It was the seventh time Obama hit the 38 percent mark, the pollsters said, speculating the latest dive may reflect global strife. “We have the situation in Russia, we have the situation in Syria and we have the situation of Americans being beheaded by ISIS,” said Gallup editor-in-chief Frank Newport. Since Gallup began keeping track, every president’s approval rating has fallen below 40 percent at times, except Dwight Eisenhower’s and John F. Kennedy’s.

Barack Obama stands apart from other modern American Presidents in many ways. (snip)the widespread view that he is the coolest President ever. This supernal coolness is not new. In his autobiography, Dreams From My Father, the President wrote that in his teenage years “I tried my best to be cool at all times” (p. 82). However, leaving aside the contradiction inherent in trying to be cool, it is possible that Barack Obama’s teenage experiences may have left him psychologically, and perhaps even neurologically, incapable of performing fundamental tasks of his current position. Maybe the news that a second American has been beheaded will force President Obama to recognize he has no more compelling priority today than stopping the Islamic State and its bloodletting. In its latest barbarity, ISIS aimed to project American weakness to the world. Just before he beheaded Steven Sotloff, the ISIS executioner explained the butchery this way: I’m back, Obama, and I’m back because of your arrogant foreign policy towards the Islamic State, because of your insistence on continuing your bombings.?.?. Up to 70 veteran USA Today journalists, editors, and others were laid off Wednesday, and reports claim that the newly unemployed were "marched out by security" and within 15 minutes had their email accounts shut off. It was only a few weeks ago that Gannett did the same. USA Today is Gannett´s flagship publication and enjoys the highest circulation of any other American newspaper. Rivers’ daughter, Melissa, had been keeping vigil by her mother’s bedside at Mount Sinai Hospital as her condition failed to improve since she went into cardiac arrest on Aug. 28 at Yorkville Endoscopy. She was moved from the intensive care unit to a private room on Wednesday. The State Health Department has launched an investigation into the clinic. The home-cooked meal has long been romanticized, from ’50s-era sitcoms to the work of star food writer Michael Pollan, who once wrote, “far from oppressing them, the work of cooking approached in the proper spirit offered a kind of fulfillment and deserved an intelligent woman’s attention.” In recent years, the home-cooked meal has increasingly been offered up as the solution to our country´s burgeoning nutrition-related health problems of heart disease and diabetes. But while home-cooked meals are typically healthier than restaurant food, sociologists Sarah Bowen, Sinikka Elliott, and Joslyn Brenton from North Carolina State University argue that the stress that
