WASHINGTON — Mounting crises in Ukraine and the Middle East have driven a surge in President Obama´s telephone diplomacy, as the president has made more calls in July to world leaders than in all but one month of his presidency, according to White House records analyzed by USA TODAY. The calls, analyzed from almost 1,100 publicly disclosed records since 2009, show how Obama has relied heavily on European leaders, particularly British Prime Minister David Cameron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, to help navigate trouble spots. And they provide a glimpse into how the president conducts diplomacy and who his most

You might have read about how the Islamic State has been using Twitter and other social media platforms to gain power, attention and recruits. Now, though, a suspected Jerusalem-based affiliate of the jihadist group has announced that Twitter employees would be better off dead. The Twitter account with the handle @Dawlamoon, which has since been suspended, called on "lone wolf" terrorists in the United States and Europe to kill Twitter employees. WASHINGTON — Homeland Security officials warned Wednesday they don’t have a full picture of the Americans and Europeans heading to Syria to train with ISIS and therefore can’t stop them from coming into the US. “We don’t have a fulsome picture in all cases,” said Jennifer Lasley, a deputy undersecretary at the Department of Homeland Security. “It does concern us,” added Troy Miller, an acting assistant commissioner with US Customs and Border Protection. House Homeland Security Committee chairman Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) called the situation worrisome. “You don’t know what you don’t know. We only have estimates of how many

Free money for everyone! With weak job growth, rising poverty, and the rich continuing to devour nearly all economic growth, it´s an idea that is gaining more credence. Arguments for a universal basic income (UBI) — in which everyone without exception would receive an equal stipend — have flourished in policy-centric areas of the internet, including The Week. Advocates of UBI see it as a blunter, more effective means of reducing poverty and shrinking the inequality gap. Washington — President Obama’s speech Wednesday on the growing threat from Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria represents a major test of his leadership. It’s being billed as an address to the nation, but it will reach far beyond that. Mr. Obama will be speaking foremost to the American people –Democrats, Republicans, and independents – in the heat of the midterm campaign. And it comes at a time of heightened sensitivity to terrorism, the eve of the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, and the second anniversary of the attack on the US mission in Benghazi, Libya.
