Napoleon once ascribed his success to being able to see things as they were, and not as reflected in a fun house mirror. “The first qualification of a general-in-chief is to possess a cool head, so that things may appear to him in their true proportions and as they really are.” (Snip) In the White House things are viewed through the peculiar prism distorted by the incumbent’s view of himself. He’s so big in his mind that it blots out the sun and he never sees the hit coming. When Bob Herbert in the New York Times claimed that “Mr.

The Hamas attacks against Israel are probably coordinated with ISIS, so as to distract the ADHD Vietnam Veteran John F´n Kerry and the Israel hating Obama from what´s going on in Iraq, Syria, and Libya. Fernandez is exactly right: Obama can´t see past mid-court of his basketball game and he falls for every head fake. And he will draw the foul and allow a 3-point play every time. He´s way past his foul limit, but the refs can´t bring themselves to throw him out of the game.

Much of today’s commentary revolves around the president’s inability to articulate a policy towards ISIS. The president was pressed in Estonia to outline his plans amid multiple crises, especially in the aftermath of Steven Sotloff’s decapitation. (Snip) When you lead from the front, you control the coalition. When you lead from behind, the coalition controls you. This indecision can be disguised under the pose of “sophistication” or “nuance,” where you claim to adapt your behavior to the “context”. But it is really a euphemism for spinelessness. When you’re not in charge, someone else is. Since Obama has declined to take

BRADENTON -- People from all over the world were watching Twitch.TV live streamer LaggySpork playing Minecraft at 6:45 a.m. Sunday when a dozen armed Bradenton Police Department officers stormed into his living room. Unknown to LaggySpork, the online moniker for Lakeside South resident Mike Dolen, a Bradenton computer whiz who makes extra money playing Minecraft and other video games for an online audience, someone called the police claiming her father had a machine gun, her mother had just been shot and she was hiding in a closet. Police traced the call to the Dolen´s home in the 3700 block of

LAKELAND | John Morgan, the leader of a campaign to pass a constitutional amendment to legalize medical marijuana, made his case to an audience Thursday during a forum at Lakeland´s Harrison School of the Arts. A few hours later, Morgan stood on a stage at a much different venue — the Boots N Buckles Saloon in North Lakeland — and used considerably saltier language in seeking votes for Amendment 2. At least one patron at the nightclub captured Morgan´s monologue on a phone and posted two video clips on Facebook. The clips show Morgan still garbed in the dark suit

Peter Beinart’s widely quoted article in the Atlantic, Actually, Obama Does Have a Strategy in the Middle East, has the tagline “the president is neither a dove nor a hawk. He’s a fierce minimalist.” (Snip) He ends on a note of touching faith: “Barack Obama didn’t become president by tilting at windmills.” No, Obama became president because people like Beinart believed he would take them to a different place than where they now stand, each hour bringing a new humiliation and crisis. Roger Simon wrote on Twitter: “Not a single #liberal friend of mine wants to discuss politics now. They’re humiliated

The escape of the Filipino UN contingent from the clutches of the al-Nusra has a tragic-comic postscript. The Associated Press reports: ”The Philippine military said Monday that a UN peacekeeping commander in the Golan Heights should be investigated for allegedly asking Filipino troops to surrender to Syrian rebels who had attacked and surrounded their camp.” (Snip) The Fijians are now in a tight spot. I wrote yesterday, it is in Nusra’s interest to let the Fijians go. If they want to incentivize surrender they must make it safe. Lately the al-Qaeda affiliates have reversed the usual payoffs. It is surrender

Most Americans realize that Labor Day is about celebrating workers and their contribution to our free society, but that won’t stop union bosses from stealing the spotlight to push their own agenda. Despite this, there is still much to celebrate this Labor Day. Workers from across the country have made substantial gains for workplace freedom. In America’s newest Right to Work state, a growing number of workers from across Michigan are joining the fight to protect their right to work from union bosses. In Wisconsin, the state Supreme Court upheld in entirety Gov. Scott Walker’s public-sector unionism reforms, commonly known

“What’s in a name?” Shakespeare asked. Everything, it may turn out. The Washington Post describes the efforts of Samaritan Ministries to offer an alternative to Obamacare. (Snip) It is here where the God of Mathematics touches down upon the earth. One of the reasons faith-based health care Ministries might work is self-selection. Cynics may scoff at the morality clauses of Samaritan Ministries, but such morality clauses are probably written on the handout your doctor gave you under the heading “lifestyle changes” when your blood pressure turned up too high and the lab came back with alarming cholesterol and sugar counts.

LAS VEGAS - The mixed martial arts fighter known as War Machine has been extradited to Las Vegas to face charges he beat his ex-girlfriend and then fled to California. The man born Jonathan Paul Koppenhaver was booked into Clark County jail Saturday after he said in a Ventura County, California, courtroom last week that he wouldn´t contest his return to Nevada. Koppenhaver, 32, a former porn actor, is accused of beating adult film actress Christy Mack and her male friend at a Las Vegas home on Aug. 8 before fleeing to the Los Angeles suburb of Simi Valley, where he

A minor drama just concluded in the Middle East. A couple of days ago, Syrian rebels identified with the Nusra front, Syria’s al-Qaeda affiliate, went up to a Fijian United Nations peacekeeping outpost on the Golan Heights and demanded their surrender. (Snip) Nobody ever expects the Philippines to win battles in wartime. It is too weak and poor and disorganized for that. But the population demands of its army that they never be outfoxed. You might die, so long as you die in style. And if you make a fool of the enemy in the process then there is victory

Eden’s greatest attraction is that it was a time before guilt; before hatred, greed and lust took over the world. (Snip) And if our ancestors killed the Neanderthals, then war — and genocide — goes back at least 45,000 years. The interesting thing about this narrative is it suggests that many of the conquerors were conquered in turn. Or as Glenn Reynolds puts it, what if “‘First Peoples’ were actually just the last people to wipe out whoever was there before”? The real honor, apparently belongs not to the First, but to the Last peoples. Thank Gaia we’re the last!

David Cameron just warned Britain to brace for a possible ISIS attack on its shores. The jayvee ISIS team Obama scoffed at sure gets around. Cameron says ISIS ‘is more dangerous than al-Qaeda’. The doorman the president contemptuously glowered over at the summits is acting uppity too. That doorman, Vladimir Putin, has just used the “N” word in Ukraine. The “N” word being “Nuclear”.

President Obama said Wednesday that the federal government has authenticated a video showing the beheading of American journalist Steven Sotloff at the hands of Islamist militants, and the U.S. objective now is to “degrade and destroy” those militants so they no longer pose a threat to the civilized world. Speaking at a press conference alongside Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves in the Estonian capital of Tallinn, Mr. Obama seemed to lay the groundwork for expanded U.S. action against the terrorist group known as the Islamic State, also known by the acronyms ISIL and ISIS. Maybe the news that a second American has been beheaded will force President Obama to recognize he has no more compelling priority today than stopping the Islamic State and its bloodletting. In its latest barbarity, ISIS aimed to project American weakness to the world. Just before he beheaded Steven Sotloff, the ISIS executioner explained the butchery this way: I’m back, Obama, and I’m back because of your arrogant foreign policy towards the Islamic State, because of your insistence on continuing your bombings.?.?. Up to 70 veteran USA Today journalists, editors, and others were laid off Wednesday, and reports claim that the newly unemployed were "marched out by security" and within 15 minutes had their email accounts shut off. It was only a few weeks ago that Gannett did the same. USA Today is Gannett´s flagship publication and enjoys the highest circulation of any other American newspaper. FRIENDSHIP, Maine -- Imagine Cape Cod without cod. Maine without lobster. The region´s famous rocky beaches invisible, obscured by constant high waters. It´s already starting to happen. The culprit is the warming seas - and in particular the Gulf of Maine, whose waters are heating up faster than 99 percent of the world´s oceans, scientists say. Long-established species of commercial fish, like cod, herring and northern shrimp, are departing for colder waters. Black sea bass, blue crabs and new species of squid - all highly unusual for the Gulf - are turning up in fishermen´s nets. The Gulf of Maine´s warming reflects broader

The home-cooked meal has long been romanticized, from ’50s-era sitcoms to the work of star food writer Michael Pollan, who once wrote, “far from oppressing them, the work of cooking approached in the proper spirit offered a kind of fulfillment and deserved an intelligent woman’s attention.” In recent years, the home-cooked meal has increasingly been offered up as the solution to our country´s burgeoning nutrition-related health problems of heart disease and diabetes. But while home-cooked meals are typically healthier than restaurant food, sociologists Sarah Bowen, Sinikka Elliott, and Joslyn Brenton from North Carolina State University argue that the stress that

Rudy Giuliani has plans to change golf. The former mayor, a strategic adviser to the PGA, says he wants to make the game “simpler” by shortening rounds to 12 holes. “We have to make it simpler and easier. Let’s shorten the course and make playing 12 holes instead of 18 holes the norm,” Giuliani declared in a Hamptons magazine cover story with golfer Raymond Floyd. “I’ve played tennis for 20 years, and I’ve never played five sets like the pros do,” he explained. “I’ll play three sets with my pals. So why play 18 holes? That’s what pros do to win tournaments.” Giuliani
