Authorities charge 2 with second-
degree murder in deadly carjacking

Philadelphia Inquirer [PA], by Aubrey Whelan

Original Article

Posted By:Ribicon, 7/28/2014 5:37:56 PM

The two suspects in custody in connection with Friday´s deadly carjacking that killed three young children have each been charged with three counts of murder, carjacking and sexual assault. During an afternoon news conference at Police Headquarters, District Attorney Seth Williams announced that Jonathan Rosa, 19, and Cornelius Crawford were each charged with murder in second degree and other offenses, adding that they face hundreds of years in prison. (Snip) Crawford was convicted in 2007 of robbery, sentenced to 13 years, paroled, jailed again, then released again recently, Williams said. The men were taken into custody Sunday night, concluding a citywide manhunt

Comments:
Just as I predicted, at least one of the killers has had prior (lint) brushes with the law. Had the so-called judicial system not set him free some 13 years early (not counting what should have been additional time for the initial catch-and release), three children would probably be alive today.

Glad they are caught. It looked like they might never be identified.

Another revolving door case; sentenced to 13 years and paroled in less than 6, then back in, then back out, now probably back in.

The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits unexpectedly rose last week to a two-month high, interrupting a steady decrease to the lowest level since before the last recession. Jobless claims climbed by 11,000 to 315,000 in the week ended Sept. 6, which included the Labor Day holiday, a Labor Department report showed Thursday. It was the highest reading since June 28 and exceeded the Bloomberg survey median forecast of 300,000. The data are difficult to adjust during holiday periods, a Labor Department spokesman said as the figures were released. Initial claims have been hovering near pre-recession lows as the labor

Muslim students are to be offered Sharia-compliant interest free loans by the government in an attempt to get more Islamic pupils to go to university. Since tuition fees were increased in September 2012, many Muslim students have been put off continuing their education as it was expected the loans, which are paid back above the rate of inflation, would be used to cover the rising costs - contrary to their beliefs. Following a four-month consultation, a new Sharia-friendly model which involves Muslim students paying a donation into a pool system instead of paying interest has been produced by the Department

An 11-year-old girl whose lips became so chapped they bled at school is now petitioning the district to let her use lip balm. Grace Karaffa, a fifth-grader at Stuarts Draft Elementary School in Virginia, has suffered from dry lips for years and and repeatedly her requests for ChapStick have been turned down because the district considers the ointment an ´over-the-counter drug´ that require´s a doctor´s note and must be held by the school nurse. The boy pleaded guilty on Monday in juvenile court in connection with the murders of Zainee Hailey, Kasson Morman and Abdul Frazier, said Katherine Carter, spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office. Under the terms of a plea agreement, he faces up to 40 years in prison when he is sentenced, Carter said. Archaeologists have discovered that Stonehenge had a huge stone sibling just two miles to the northeast. Using powerful ground-penetrating radar, which can ‘x-ray’ archaeological sites to a depth of up to four metres, investigators from Birmingham and Bradford universities and from the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute in Vienna have discovered a 330 metre long line of more than 50 massive stones, buried under part of the bank of Britain’s largest pre-historic henge. “Up till now, we had absolutely no idea that the stones were there,” said the co-director of the investigation Professor Vince Gaffney of Birmingham University.

Detroit is so broke that firefighters get emergency alerts through pop cans, coins, door hinges, pipes and doorbells. And they make these gizmos themselves — one involving a pop can that gets tipped over by an incoming fax. The clink of the can means there’s an emergency. Then there’s the chain-reaction gadget: a fax hits a door hinge, which then tugs on a wire, which then sets off a doorbell. “It sounds unbelievable, but it’s truly what the guys have been doing and dealing with for a long, long time,” said Detroit Deputy Fire Commissioner John Berlin, adding that technological

As we suspected, President Obama tried in his Wednesday-night speech to make it sound like he was doing something new when he, in fact, he is not. Moreover, in describing his response, he made plain that he doesn’t take the threat to the homeland seriously. For a threat his advisers say is greater than that posed by al-Qaeda after 2001, he proposed measures suitable for Yemen and Somalia. No, really — that’s the plan. For starters, the president doesn’t believe the Islamic State is a current threat to the U.S.: “So ISIL poses a threat to the people of Iraq

Rarely has a president faced a greater challenge in establishing his credibility for a new foreign-policy move than Barack Obama did in his nationally televised speech tonight. A CNN poll earlier this week found that just 30 percent of voters thought Obama had presented a clear plan for fighting the Islamic State. While Obama now pledges to ask Congress to train and aid Syrian rebels who would fight the group, voters remember that he backed similar plans in Syria in 2013, when his advisers saw Syrian president Bashar Assad as the major threat.
