Drone schools spring up in the US
Wall Street Journal, by Jack Nicas

Original Article

Capitalizing on an anticipated boom in the unmanned-aircraft industry, several US universities and colleges are launching training programs for future drone pilots. The problem: the US Federal Aviation Administration says its rules barring commercial use of drones apply to teaching programs as well, effectively prohibiting students from hands-on instruction. So the schools are teaching tomorrow’s drone pilots with simulators, textbooks and more novel workarounds. (Snip) “We don’t have to do much recruiting. They come to us,” said Dan Macchiarella, Embry-Riddle’s chairman of aeronautical science.

With our borders all but non-existant, who could possibly believe that NOW is the time to have a drone flying overhead. It´s much easier to deliver a WMD, whether chemical or a dirty bomb to an unsuspecting public.

Model airplanes could have delivered any payloads that a commercially-available drone can deliver - these drone schools aren´t teaching how to use those big military drones, which aren´t available to the public.

A lot of young people are hoping to make a career in drones, kind of like the robotics craze some years back. Instead of spending thousands on a school, in my opinion, better to spend those thousands on getting good kits, camera and a laptop. Camera-controlling software is open-source and there´s lots of advice on the internet. I know a couple of young guys who approached it that way and it´s very interesting to me. Battery life is the big limitation and flights don´t last very long - 10 to 15 minutes is good.

A Senate investigative panel on Friday confirmed that the Internal Revenue Service used inappropriate methods to scrutinize tax-exempt groups but said it found “no evidence of IRS political bias” in the agency’s actions. In its 228-page report, the Democrat-led Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations also criticized the IRS’s independent watchdog for allegedly failing to make clear that the agency targeted more than just conservative groups. The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration released an audit last year that said the IRS pulled aside groups for extra scrutiny based on their names and policy positions,

A federal judge ruled Friday that a tribal casino in northern Idaho had to stop offering Texas Hold’em, saying it violated the state’s gambling laws. The Coeur d’Alene tribe’s casino in Worely, Idaho, must stop offering Texas Hold’em, U.S. District Judge Lynn Winmill said, despite the tribe’s argument that it is a “bona fide contest of skill” and therefore exempt from the tribe’s agreements with the state under the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, Gov. Butch Otter’s (R) office said in a statement. Winmill ruled that the game contained elements of chance, making it illegal in the state.

The House has been relegated to subplot status in the 2014 midterm election, with the Senate majority in play and the House majority ... well ... not. But if you spend a little time with us here on The Fix (c´mon in, the water´s warm), you´ll come to realize that there are some pretty interesting House races out there too. And the race for the House still matters, of course, because the size of the GOP majority has real bearing on the legislation that is passed -- not to mention how difficult it will be for Democrats to win back the House in 2016 or future elections. Basically, here's where things stand: Republicans, as they do in the Senate,

She also describes ending an earlier ectopic pregnancy, in which an embryo implants outside the uterus. Davis disclosed the terminated pregnancies for the first time since her nearly 13-hour filibuster last

Prospects for an international agreement over Iran’s disputed nuclear program appeared to suffer a setback Friday when a United Nations monitoring agency said the Iranians had yet to meet two of five confidence-building measures to ensure that their activities are purely peaceful. A report by the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna said Iran had so far not explained unresolved issues over its research into detonators that could be used to trigger a nuclear weapon, and had likewise not explained studies that could be relevant to calculating the explosive yield of a nuclear weapon.

Washington - A chartered aircraft carrying about 100 Americans from the U.S. airbase at Bagram, Afghanistan, has landed safely in Dubai after being diverted to Iran because of issues with its flight plan, the U.S. State Department said on Friday. The Fly Dubai plane took off earlier from Bandar Abbas, Iran, after being rerouted there. A U.S. official said the plane had failed to update its flight plan after leaving Bagram for Dubai several hours late. When Iranian civil aviation officials identified the plane, they could not find it in their system because it was supposed to have flown through hours earlier, the official said.

Barack Obama stands apart from other modern American Presidents in many ways. (snip)the widespread view that he is the coolest President ever. This supernal coolness is not new. In his autobiography, Dreams From My Father, the President wrote that in his teenage years “I tried my best to be cool at all times” (p. 82). It was only a few weeks ago that Gannett did the same. USA Today is Gannett´s flagship publication and enjoys the highest circulation of any other American newspaper.
