Duke of Westminster: There is
no more honourable cause than
helping wounded soldiers

Telegraph [UK], by Christopher Hope

Original Article

The Duke of Westminster is used to developing properties. As one of Britain’s wealthiest men, he owns swathes of central London through his company, Grosvenor Estates, as well as hotels, office blocks and flats across the country. But it is his plans for a new development in the Midlands that he considers will be his life’s achievement: the new £300million Defence National Rehabilitation Centre (DNRC) at Stanford Hall, near Loughborough. [Snip] In his first interview since the plans were given the green light this month, the Duke is forthright about why he wants to build the new centre in the

Comments:
During the world wars, stately homes were volunteered to serve as hospitals for wounded soldiers. Glamis Castle was one and the late Queen Mother, too young to nurse at 14, helped entertain the soldiers recovering in her family home. The Duke has bought (with his own money) Stanford Hall, Nottinghamshire, and is raising private funds for its transformation. You can find photos off the house and its lovely surroundings at http://tinyurl.com/kbq93ne

As for the richest men in our country, are any organizing anything like this incredible project? I hope it sparks some ideas.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Friday it would be inappropriate for Iran to attend an upcoming meeting in Paris on how to defeat the Islamic State group, The Associated Press (AP) reported. Speaking to reporters in the Turkish capital, Kerry said he has not been formally asked about whether Iran should participate in the meeting of diplomats set for Monday. However, he added, Iran should not be there, given its support for Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad in his three-year war against rebels that are trying to oust him from power. Germany’s flagship Bard 1 offshore wind farm has been described as “a faulty total system” as technical problems continue to plague the project, casting major doubts on the feasibility of large scale offshore projects. The wind farm was officially turned on in August last year but was shut down again almost immediately due to technical difficulties that have still not been resolved--and now lawyers are getting involved. Built at a cost of hundreds of millions and costing between €1 and €2 million a day to service, the project is estimated to have cost €340 million in lost power generation over

Dozens of firefighters were last night battling an ‘explosive’ blaze at a new £15million laboratory at Nottingham University. Students were warned to stay indoors and close all windows and doors to avoid flying debris as the fire tore through the GlaxoSmithKline Carbon Neutral Laboratory--which was due to open next month. A university spokesman insisted an open day would take place as planned today, despite the huge blaze which lit up the sky for miles around, sending plumes of smoke could be seen across the city high into the sky. Onlookers reported hearing several explosions as 60 firefighters fought to bring the

Scottish soldiers living temporarily abroad, either in barracks in the UK or at British bases abroad, have expressed "fury" at being denied the vote in next week´s referendum over the future of a country they hope to return to after their service. Thousands of Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen native to Scotland live and work outside of the country, following a military tradition of Scots serving which goes back many hundreds of years. Due to electoral rules, those without an address in Scotland itself cannot vote, meaning those Scots temporarily residing in England, or Cyprus, or Germany will be denied their

Hamas appeared to admit using human shields to fire rockets into Israel for the first time today, but refused to accept responsibility for the slaughter of hundreds of innocent Palestinians killed in retaliatory airstrikes. In a veiled confession that comes two weeks after the end of the Gaza war, a senior Hamas official said the group´s fighters had no choice but to use residential areas from which to launch missiles into their neighbour´s territory. But while Ghazi Hamad claimed they took safeguards to keep people away from the violence, he admitted ´mistakes were made´, blaming Israel´s heavy-handed response for the

Iraqi forces retook a key strategic town from Islamic State militants today in a victory that has been hailed as a possible turning point in the fight against jihadis overrunning the country. Barwanah, in Iraq´s Anbar province, has been gripped by vicious fighting for months since IS fighters overran the region last December. But yesterday, after American warplanes carried out strikes in the area, Iraqi troops finally broke through IS defences as part of a major operation to wrest back the province from the clutches of the extremist horde. The essential components of a coherent foreign policy strategy include not merely the identification of a problem but also some idea of what the consequences of dealing with it might be. Barack Obama, in outlining his plans for confronting the threat posed by Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil), was convincing on the former but less persuasive on the latter. The group expressed its opposition to American force, which it called an “aggressive” and “illegal” intervention in a sovereign state, hours after President Barack Obama announced his intent to target Islamic State terrorists “wherever they exist.” But the White House made clear that the president’s decision had already been made. Qua speech, Barack Obama’s address Wednesday on the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria was surprisingly terrible: a disorganized mess, insincere and unconvincing. To appreciate just how bad and bizarre it was, compare the president’s speech announcing a new air campaign in Iraq and Syria to Dwight Eisenhower’s 1958 statement on his decision to intervene in Lebanon with 14,000—14,000!—troops. The statement contains no chest-thumping about America’s leadership in science and medicine. No pivot to the auto industry and medical research. Eisenhower simply explained what had been done, and why.

Throughout his presidency, President Obama has emphasized one point while talking about Islamist extremists: They are not practicing Islam, he has said, they are perverting it. He took that a step further Wednesday night. While announcing that he´s expanding the campaign against the Islamic State extremist group into Syria, Obama said flatly that this group, which is trying to install a caliphate in the Middle East, "is not Islamic." Check your hygiene privilege. Cabbies who smell badly are probably just oppressed folks who came directly from their terrorist training camp to the airport and didn’t have time to change. Body odour is among 52 criteria that officials at San Diego International Airport use to judge taxi drivers. Cabbies say that smacks of prejudice and discrimination.
