JERUSALEM -- Israel has resumed its Gaza offensive after a series of Palestinian rocket attacks. The Israeli military said Sunday that following "Hamas´ incessant rocket fire" during the unilateral Israeli extension of a temporary humanitarian truce it would resume targeting Gaza militants. Israel´s Cabinet had unilaterally decided to extend the truce for 24 hours, until midnight (2100 GMT) Sunday. Hamas, which has requested the lifting of an Israeli and Egyptian blockade on Gaza, among other demands, did not agree to extend the truce. The 20-day operation has already killed more than 1,000 Palestinians and 45 Israelis. THIS IS A BREAKING

Lesson for lawmakers in Landrieu,

Every election cycle, some candidate or elected official gets hammered for not really living in their district. The persons getting this treatment this time around are senior senators Mary Landrieu, who represents Louisiana, and Pat Roberts who represents Kansas. Both lawmakers are being attacked by their opponents for really living in the Washington/Virginia area and having questionable residency back home. There are serious issues and sometimes not so serious issues in every election cycle. In a year in which voters hate Congress with a passion, the disapproval rating for members of the Senate and the House of Representatives is at a whopping 75

Government mistakenly withheld

The federal government accidentally withheld $2.4 million out of September disability compensation checks for 12,000 veterans owed the money for service-related physical or emotional disabilities, according to the Department of Veterans. The VA, which apologized for the mistake Wednesday, says it has worked with the U.S. Department of Treasury to pay back all the money either by direct deposit or with checks sent by mail. The "withholding error" occurred in cases where veterans were participating in repayment plans where a portion of their disability check was to be withheld to cover a VA healthcare debt owed to the agency by the veteran,

Death of Yoda the 650-Year-Old Tree

A Douglas fir affectionately named Yoda survived many a drought in its six-plus centuries of existence in a rugged lava flow in the El Malpais National Monument area near Grants, New Mexico, but it couldn’t weather the current extreme drought in the parched Southwest. The recent death of the 7-foot-tall tree, estimated to be more than 650 years old, is a testament to the severity of today´s drought, scientists say. A core sample obtained in 1991 established that Yoda had lived at least since 1406, but it likely had been alive since 1350 or so, Henri Grissino-Mayer of the University of Tennessee,

CARDIFF, Wales — President Obama is “aware” of the gruesome videotaped executions of two American journalists in Syria at the hands of Islamic State militants but does not want to “put a spotlight” on them with his attention, a senior Obama foreign policy adviser told ABC News. Asked whether the president has seen the messages directly addressed to him in the videos showing the beheading of Americans James Foley and Steven Sotloff, Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes said Obama is “not inerested.” “The president is not interested in lifting up, essentially, the propaganda efforts of a completely barbaric terrorist organization like

Friday the Labor Department is expected to report the economy added 230,000 jobs in August. The pace has picked up a bit but is still far less than needed to reemploy all the prime aged workers displaced in the wake of the financial crisis. The jobless rate is down to 6.1 percent but that statistic is deceptive. For example, one in six adult males between the ages of 25 and 54 is not working. Many don´t show up in the unemployment count, because they are not actively looking for a job. They spend their days cluttering park benches or watching ESPN, because

Even for an employed schoolteacher like Narinder, it is hard to find a bride these days. Narinder is a shy, slender 36-year old with a certain anxiety about him -- as if he has resigned to a fate that he is unable to change. He is very polite and at first, reluctant to talk about his situation. Narinder is one of four sons and only one of his brothers has managed to get married. In his district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, there are only 858 girls born for every 1,000 boys, a ratio that doesn´t occur naturally without medical intervention.

Eastern Hopes For NATO

WARSAW, Poland -- On the eve of a NATO summit, President Barack Obama gave the alliance´s eastern European members a soaring assurance of protection from any Russian threat. But Poland and the Baltic states are seeking more than lofty words: They want permanent bases with troops on their land. And they probably won´t get that. While the request from Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia will be on the agenda at the summit in Wales, European heavyweight Germany and other members strongly oppose it. They argue that it would violate a 1997 agreement with Russia in which NATO pledges not to

Just in time for the season´s final barbecue, President Obama last week backed off his promise (threat?) to "do something" about immigration reform by the end of the summer if Congress failed to send him a bill addressing the issue. He needs more time, we´re told. It´s a dumb and uneventful conclusion to a dumb, uneventful summer in Washington politics. Obama´s promise to rewrite America´s immigration law through a mixture of executive fiat and a kind of officious neglect may have been calculated to incite a GOP freakout, a summer of polarizing impeachment rage, or a self-defeating government shutdown. Tuesday, news broke that the Islamic State had released a “Second Message to America” in the form of an Internet video in which it claimed it had brutally murdered another American journalist, Steven Sotloff. It’s almost impossible to put into words the horror of it. One can only hope that the people who sympathize with the Islamic State aren’t the only ones now motivated to do something. But recent events don’t offer much encouragement. Most tellingly, Fox News´ James Rosen asked State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki the question Tuesday that many of us have had on our minds: “A lot of Americans are

In the video, the authenticity of which Earnest could confirm, Sotloff is apparently killed by the same British jihadist who killed American photojournalist James Foley. “I’m back, Obama, and I’m back because of your arrogant foreign policy towards the Islamic State,”

Maybe the news that a second American has been beheaded will force President Obama to recognize he has no more compelling priority today than stopping the Islamic State and its bloodletting. In its latest barbarity, ISIS aimed to project American weakness to the world. It was only a few weeks ago that Gannett did the same. USA Today is Gannett´s flagship publication and enjoys the highest circulation of any other American newspaper. FRIENDSHIP, Maine -- Imagine Cape Cod without cod. Maine without lobster. The region´s famous rocky beaches invisible, obscured by constant high waters. It´s already starting to happen. The culprit is the warming seas - and in particular the Gulf of Maine, whose waters are heating up faster than 99 percent of the world´s oceans, scientists say. Long-established species of commercial fish, like cod, herring and northern shrimp, are departing for colder waters. Black sea bass, blue crabs and new species of squid - all highly unusual for the Gulf - are turning up in fishermen´s nets. The Gulf of Maine´s warming reflects broader

The home-cooked meal has long been romanticized, from ’50s-era sitcoms to the work of star food writer Michael Pollan, who once wrote, “far from oppressing them, the work of cooking approached in the proper spirit offered a kind of fulfillment and deserved an intelligent woman’s attention.” In recent years, the home-cooked meal has increasingly been offered up as the solution to our country´s burgeoning nutrition-related health problems of heart disease and diabetes. But while home-cooked meals are typically healthier than restaurant food, sociologists Sarah Bowen, Sinikka Elliott, and Joslyn Brenton from North Carolina State University argue that the stress that

Rudy Giuliani has plans to change golf. The former mayor, a strategic adviser to the PGA, says he wants to make the game “simpler” by shortening rounds to 12 holes. “We have to make it simpler and easier. Let’s shorten the course and make playing 12 holes instead of 18 holes the norm,” Giuliani declared in a Hamptons magazine cover story with golfer Raymond Floyd. “I’ve played tennis for 20 years, and I’ve never played five sets like the pros do,” he explained. “I’ll play three sets with my pals. So why play 18 holes? That’s what pros do to win tournaments.” Giuliani
