New York Times: Legalize marijuana
Politico, by Craig Howie

The New York Times’ editorial board on Saturday called on the federal government to legalize marijuana. Citing alcohol prohibition, social costs and states’ movements, the board argued “after a great deal of discussion” that “the balance falls squarely on the side of national legalization.” “We considered whether it would be best for Washington to hold back while the states continued experimenting with legalizing medicinal uses of marijuana, reducing penalties, or even simply legalizing all use. Nearly three-quarters of the states have done one of these,” the editorial said. “But that would leave their citizens vulnerable to the whims of whoever happens

You cannot smoke cigarettes anywhere in NYC, so where do the editors expect city folk to smoke legal marijuana?

I have to go along with the Times on this one. The federal government has never had the constitutional grounds to make any drug illegal (remember how there had to be a constitutional amendment to ban alcohol? And another to make it legal again?).

Thus any sort of War on Drugs must be waged by the States alone. Let each State make its own decision.

For once I agree with the Slimes.

But not just pot - - all narcotics should be completely legal.

There should still be penalties for public intoxication - - but the gummint has no right whatsoever to tell free individuals what they may or may not ingest.

The end of Prohibition is not only the moral and Constitutional position - - it´s also the practical position since it will - - just as with the end of alcohol Prohibition - - put an instant end to all drug gangs and all drug crimes.

The true right-wing position is an end to ALL drug Prohibition.

While recreational drug use may be a very bad idea, it is also a very private matter.

If we let them make drugs illegal, the next thing you know they will be telling us how big carbonated soft drinks can be.

No, really....I´m not kidding....it could happen.

I cannot think of any instance other then possible fire hazard that marijuana is more dangerous to society then alcohol. But it is marijuana that is illegal.

Until that hurdle of logic is jumped any argument for keeping marijuana illegal is as idiotic as it is hypocritical.

When former President George W. Bush makes a rare visit to Washington today, he won’t criticize President Obama for the bloodletting Obama unleashed with his withdrawal from Iraq. After leaving office, Bush promised Obama his silence. He is a man of his word. But if Bush did speak out, here is what he ought to say: I told you so. In the summer of 2007, Bush warned of the dire consequence of pulling U.S. troops out of Iraq against the advice of our commanders on the ground. All of Washington was telling Bush that the surge he had launched would

The Obama administration will make a decision on executive action to prevent corporations from leaving the country in the "very near future," Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said Monday morning. Speaking at an event on business taxes at the Urban Institute in Washington, Lew placed the responsibility on Congress to address so-called tax inversions, but said that the administration was prepared to step in if lawmakers don´t move quickly enough. Inversions are tax maneuvers in which corporations buy firms in low-tax countries in order to place their headquarters in that country. Such deals have grown in number in recent months, with

It is expected to reach its full phase at 9:38 p.m. ET. While it's not yet autumn, the harvest moon earned its place in lunar lore because moon rises several days before and after happen closer to sunset.

And the GOP certainly wants to avoid such a situation this year, considering they have a solid opportunity to add to their House majority and perhaps take control of

They respond to cues sent to them by voters — which can range from attaboy! to fuhggedaboutit — and to the initiatives of party leaders, especially presidents. But when the other party has held the White House for an extended period, the transformation process can be stormy and chaotic. Which is a pretty apt description of the Republican Party over the past few years. Its two living ex-presidents, the George Bushes, withdrew from active politics immediately after leaving the White House, and its
