Earlier this year, Chinese almost-billionaire Liu Yiqian purchased a Chenghua Meiyintang "chicken cup" at an auction in Hong Kong, reportedly paying more than $30 million for the 500-year-old piece. The sale made headlines for several reasons: • The cup is super old and precious. • He paid more than $30 million! • Liu Yiqian drank out of it. Yeah, that happened. When Liu Yiqian bought the cup earlier this month, he sipped tea from it, and the pictures caused a bit of a commotion. (Tweet) When asked about it, he told China Real Time that taking the drink was a

Fast times — Indian PM visit

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi´s visit to Washington next week will pose a unique etiquette challenge for the White House with the newly elected leader observing a nine-day religious fast during his stay. That´s left the White House scrambling to figure out how to handle a series of meals between Modi and administration officials where the U.S. was hoping to practice some dining diplomacy. On Monday, President Obama is hosting Modi for a working dinner at the White House, and on Tuesday, Modi is scheduled to share lunch with Vice President Biden. "We obviously try to be respectful of the

Holder denies timing his resignation for election

Attorney General Eric Holder said on Friday that the timing of his resignation had nothing to do with the midterm elections. "That decision was made irrespective of the midterms," Holder said in an interview with MSNBC. The timing of his departure allows President Obama to try to get a replacement confirmed before the new Congress arrives next year, where the Senate could be controlled by Republicans. The White House hinted on Friday that it would indeed try to get the new attorney general through in the lame-duck session. "We had accomplished a lot, and I was satisfied with the progress that

Nearly 2,000 Chicago flights canceled

Nearly 2,000 flights in Chicago have been canceled so far today as federal aviation officials slowly resume operations at O´Hare and Midway airports following a fire that was deliberately set at an FAA radar center, apparently by a disgruntled worker. The fire was started in the basement of the Aurora facility, known as the Chicago Center, around 5:40 a.m., forcing an evacuation and grounding all flights at O´Hare and Midway airports. Some flights were resumed "at a reduced rate" around 10:30 a.m. That did not prevent Southwest Airlines from canceling all its flights at Midway Airport. American Airlines said it

Andrea Mitchell on Friday landed an exclusive interview with Chicago slumlord Valerie Jarrett to discuss terrorist threats against the United States, as well as the resignation of her close friend Attorney General Eric Holder. It was a very enlightening interview. “I have nothing new to report,” Jarrett said when asked about reported threats to U.S. subway systems. Mitchell asked about President Obama’s speech at the United Nations earlier this week. It was a very important speech, Jarrett said. “It was a very strong, powerful speech,” she said. “It was a very constructive and important week, and the speech sent a

Members of Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) are fleeing Syria for safer positions in Iraq, as rival Syrian al Qaeda forces also began moving their forces to avoid U.S. bombing attacks, according to U.S. officials and reports from the region. Additionally, post-strike intelligence indicates both terror groups are trying to hide their locations and are avoiding electronic communications to avoid being attacked in the ongoing U.S.-led missile and aerial bombing campaign. The movement and concealment efforts by both groups began after Monday’s opening bombing campaign of 47 cruise missile and aerial attacks have continued with

As news of the beheading of an Oklahoma woman swept the nation Friday afternoon, all eyes turned to the White House to see whether President Barack Obama would cancel his 4:30 p.m. Democratic National Committee roundtable fundraiser at a private Washington home to issue a statement. According to Moore, Oklahoma Police Department Sgt. Jeremy Lewis, the man alleged to have beheaded victim Colleen Hufford is Alton Nolen. "After conducting interviews with co-workers of Nolen´s, information was obtained that he recently started to convert some of his co-workers to the Muslim religion," said Sgt. WASHINGTON— Prospective Republican presidential candidates are expected to promote "religious liberty" at home and abroad at a gathering of religious conservatives, rebuking an unpopular President Barack Obama while skirting divisive social issues that have tripped up the GOP. The annual Values Voter Summit opens Friday in Washington with speeches from several potential presidential candidates, including Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal. The speaking program features ambitious Republicans with positions on social issues across the spectrum — from the libertarian-leaning Paul, who favors less emphasis on abortion and gay

Judicial Watch just won a key battle in federal court against the administration on the Fast and Furious documents President Barack Obama asserted executive privilege over to hide them from the American people and Congress. Fitton said: It is no coincidence that Holder’s resignation comes on the heels of another court ruling that the Justice Department must finally cough up documents about how Holder’s Justice Department

He admitted that the media is biased toward liberals (though believes this bias is more cultural than political) and acknowledged that having political operatives cross over into media roles is not good. Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. announced Thursday he is resigning as soon as a replacement is found, though he and the Justice Department still face contempt of Congress charges that will linger well after he officially gives up the office. Analysts said Mr. Holder — the first sitting Cabinet official ever to face a contempt citation from Congress — will likely duck any legal punishment, though his department will soon be forced to begin turning over the documents he withheld, which sparked the initial fight. It’s just the latest in a series of stormy disputes that have defined his

The View is a television show that, apparently, a lot of women watch. Currently, Rosie O’Donnell, who was once famous for something–I have no idea what–is one of the hosts. Still, many women watch. So this video of The View’s women grappling with the Obama administration’s response to ISIS terrorism is noteworthy. I want to highlight O’Donnell’s contribution near the end: We are bombing Syria because Syria has so much oil, so there is a “financial incentive.” What the Hell is this supposed to mean? Why are liberals obsessed with oil? And what, exactly, is the “financial incentive?” Here is the

Eric Holder Jr., the nation´s first black U.S. attorney general, is preparing to announce his resignation Thursday after a tumultuous tenure marked by civil rights advances, national security threats, reforms to the criminal justice system and five and a half years of fights with Republicans in Congress. Two sources familiar with the decision tell NPR that Holder, 63, intends to leave the Justice Department as soon as his successor is confirmed, a process that could run through 2014 and even into next year. President Obama on Wednesday delivered a speech at the United Nations filled with his usual soaring rhetoric of global collectivism and the importance of “international norms.” But the president also displayed a shocking naivete about global affairs, religion, Islam — a Pollyannaish interpretation on the state of the world and America’s role in it. Although Mr. Obama won a Nobel Peace Prize just eight months into office, the president made his annual trip to the ineffectual world council to deliver a call to war. “Ladies and gentlemen, we come together at a crossroads between war and peace,

Even though Republicans may take back the Senate by running against amnesty, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush pushed amnesty legislation while stumping for North Carolina Republican Senate candidate Thom Tillis on Wednesday. Bush, according to the New York Times, reportedly said that comprehensive immigration reform "will restore and sustain economic growth for this country." And even though a recent Gallup poll found that illegal immigration is now the top concern among Republicans, Bush said that if immigration reform is "framed in that way, I don’t think there’s a big debate in the Republican Party about the need to do this."

Normally, no one would care that in a recent Atlantic essay — “Why I Hope to Die at 75” — 57-year-old Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel argued that living to be 75 years old was long enough for anyone. After 75, Emanuel suggests, “We are no longer remembered as vibrant and engaged but as feeble, ineffectual, even pathetic.” But Emanuel is no garden-variety crackpot. Nor is he a wannabe science-fiction writer dreaming of a centrally planned planet of robust youthful humanoids. With the mid-term elections weeks away, many conservatives are confronting a difficult choice. Assuming there are no solid conservatives on the ballot, do we vote for establishment candidates? Or not vote at all? The reasons why some conservatives are on the fence or planning not to vote are well known. (And Democrats are loving every minute of it!) “Establishment Republicans have attacked us and I refuse to support any of them.” “I’m sick of RINO’s. They’re no better than the Democrats.” “Other than a few strong conservatives, the rest of the GOP stands for nothing.” I share these frustrations. The conversation in my head goes something

(snip) Cruz earned the ire of many conservatives for his speech to a group called "In Defense of Christians." During those remarks, Cruz made a point to say he would not support groups in the Middle East who are not pro-Israel.  He walked off the stage to a chorus of boos after eventually telling the crowd he wouldn´t "stand with" them if they did not "stand

The Los Angeles City Council voted Wednesday to raise the minimum wage for hotel workers to $15.37, one of the highest wage requirements in the country. Hotel workers in yellow shirts packed City Hall as the council voted 12 to 3 to approve the measure, which will go into effect for hotels with at least 300 rooms beginning in July. Hotels with 150 rooms or more will have to meet the wage requirement a year later. “Hotel workers are here because they want family-supporting wages,” said Maria Elena Durazo, executive secretary-treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, during the public

Of all the malfeasances of William Jefferson Clinton the one that would have most justified a removal from office was not the Monica hijinks, even with the attendant lying under oath and absurd parsings of the word “is,” but the pardoning of Marc Rich — the billionaire international commodities trader and mammoth contributor to, er, Clinton.
