Hamas fired rockets at central Israel around 10 p.m. Saturday, making a mockery of a four-hour Israeli ceasefire extension that began two hours earlier. Meanwhile, Israel´s Diplomacy and Security Cabinet has voted to extend the ceasefire by a further 24 hours in response to UN requests, a security source told AFP on condition of anonymity. The truce will end on Sunday night at 9 p.m. Hamas for its part has rejected the ceasefire extension by Israel, demanding Israeli troops withdraw first. No humanitarian ceasefire is valid without Israeli tanks withdrawing from the Gaza Strip and without residents being able to

These despicable, blood thirsty vermins don´t deserve one minute of cease fire. Moreover Israel should use rules of engagement that give unilateral priority to IDF personnels´ safety and lives. Let Hamas go to collect their 72 virgins.

The world is now becoming accustomed to seeing images of the stark black-and-white flag whose bearers are threatening to remake the Middle East and who have already taken responsibility for numerous acts of murder, massacres and ethnic cleansing across Iraq and Syria. (snip) The flag is black with the words La ‘ilaha ‘illa-llah – “There is no God but God” – emblazoned across the top in white in a somewhat coarse, handwritten Arabic script. It’s a very different kind of typeface from the more elaborate calligraphy on the Saudi flag, for example, that also includes this same shahada, or Islamic

Rep. Bill Cassidy, the Republican congressman running for the U.S. Senate in Louisiana, is taking heat from the left and the right after he said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid "runs the Senate like a plantation." Reid, asked Tuesday by reporters about the comment, demanded an apology. "With all the things going on in America today, that´s fairly insensitive," Reid told reporters on Capitol Hill. "That´s really insensitive. Very insensitive. If there was ever a statement that deserves an apology, this is it big time. Has he been taking lessons from Donald Sterling? Where did he get this?" It was just a few months ago when the Republican Study Committee, a group of far-right House GOP lawmaker, invited former Vice President Dick Cheney to Capitol Hill to complain about President Obama for a while. Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.), now a member of the House GOP leadership, said at the time, in reference to Cheney, “He’s got a lot of credibility when it comes to talking about foreign policy.” I don’t think he was kidding. Apparently, this thinking remains quite pervasive among GOP lawmakers, who keep extending invitations to Cheney, his spectacular failures and incompetence notwithstanding. The Washington Post

In 2014 the world has grown suddenly weary of Barack Obama. The president’s sorrows are coming not as single spies but in battalions. Domestically, the economic recovery remains uncertain; the Affordable Care Act is at risk; gun control is going nowhere. The prospects of immigration reform or action on climate change seem dim. Internationally, Iraq and Syria are bloodbaths; the black-flagged armies of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, known as Isis, are on the march; Israelis and Palestinians are at each other’s throats; Vladimir Putin’s creatures are shooting civilian airliners down from the sky; and the celebrated

Kerry invokes comparisons to the Sunni Awakening, seeking to recall the days when al-Qaeda in Iraq was beaten by George Bush. Obama plans to organize the Sunni Arabs to fight ISIS.

The Obama administration will make a decision on executive action to prevent corporations from leaving the country in the "very near future," Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said Monday morning. Speaking at an event on business taxes at the Urban Institute in Washington, Lew placed the responsibility on Congress to address so-called tax inversions, but said that the administration was prepared to step in if lawmakers don´t move quickly enough. Inversions are tax maneuvers in which corporations buy firms in low-tax countries in order to place their headquarters in that country. Such deals have grown in number in recent months, with
