Why Tyson Foods is closing three
plants, employing 950 workers

Reuters, by Sruthi Ramakrishnan & P.J. Huffstutter *

Bangalore and Chicago - Tyson Foods Inc said it will discontinue operations at three of its factories which make processed meat products such as sausages and hot dogs, affecting about 950 people. The largest U.S. meat processor, which won the bidding war for Hillshire Brands Co in June, said the closures were not related to the acquisition. (Snip) The closures were due to changing product needs, an aging Cherokee, Iowa factory and the distance of the Buffalo, New York and Santa Teresa, New Mexico plants from their raw material supply base, the company said on Friday. "The consolidation helps them get transportation efficiencies,"

Simply put, it´s the economy stupid and the 0bama´s war on good American eats. Bangalore is in India. Is this about the meat scares in China, or is that chicken somehow getting to our food supplies?

FTA "The number of beef cattle in the United States is at its lowest level in 63 years due to severe droughts"

Uhh, I think not. We are not allowed to drill for oil (on public land), so we burn corn (aka cattle food) in our cars. No cattle food, no cattle, no people food. Typical progressive economic policy.

No idea what Tyson is up to, but you know things are bad with food when a Chinese company bought Smithfield.

Tyson´s quality has gone down so badly, we quit buying their products a couple years ago. Purdue is much better quality, and definitely tastes better!! Too bad Tyson has bought Hillshire. That will be another brand, ruined.

The Republican Party’s top leader in Congress is catching flak for a comment that appears to call the jobless lazy – a comment that has rekindled an old challenge for the party: appearing insensitive or uncaring toward Americans who are poor or in financial difficulty. House Speaker John Boehner was asked after a speech last week to comment on a plan for addressing poverty – promoted by a Republican colleague, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin. Speaker Boehner gave a response that was favorable toward Representative Ryan´s plan, but not so favorable about Americans’ work ethic.

Why is each human face unique? It´s a question a child might ask. The tempting response for a harried parent is, "Just because." After all, no two products of nature, be they clouds, snowflakes, or fingerprints, are exact duplicates. Mother Nature is no Henry Ford; those variations in shape, color, and texture are just part of the production process. (Snip) Your face, they say, is what biologists call a signal, a mechanism that, like the shimmering tail of a peacock or the Day-Glo skin of a poison frog, sends a message to other organisms about who you are. But how could one possibly test this hypothesis?

The FBI requires state and local police to keep quiet about the capabilities of a controversial type of surveillance gear that allows law enforcement to eavesdrop on cell phone calls and track individual people based on the signals emitted by their mobile devices, according to a bureau document released recently under a Freedom of Information Act request. The December 2012 document is a heavily redacted letter between the FBI and police in Tacoma, Wash., as the local department sought to acquire an IMSI catcher, sometimes described as a “fake cell phone tower” because it tricks individual phones into routing their

Somebody is trying to destroy evidence that celebrity scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson fabricated evidence. The esteemed director of New York’s Hayden Planetarium and star of the remade Cosmos television show is going through an ion storm of criticism from the Federalist’s Sean Davis, who has so far presented persuasive cases that Tyson fabricated a newspaper headline and a quote from an unnamed member of Congress, along with a starry-eyed religious statement from former president George W. City leaders in Ferguson, Missouri, have billed a series of upcoming town hall meetings beginning Monday night as a way to continue dialogue with members of the beleaguered community and an opportunity to clear up misconceptions still swirling a month after Ferguson police shot and killed unarmed black teenager Michael Brown. With the two-year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy approaching, federal officials announced on Monday that New York and New Jersey will receive about $3.3 billion to prepare their transportation networks against future storms. The biggest pieces of the funding package will go to the New York City subway system and commuter rail systems in the surrounding region. More than one-third of all the new money will go to the subway system for projects to make rail yards, stations and equipment less susceptible to flooding. In all, the two states will receive about 90 percent of the latest round of storm aid from the federal

Baghdad - The army base in Iraq’s western Anbar province had been under siege by Islamic State militants for a week, so when a convoy of armored Humvees rolled up at the gate, the Iraqi soldiers at Camp Saqlawiyah believed saviors had arrived. But this was no rescue attempt. The vehicles were driven by militants on suicide missions, and within seconds on Sunday the base had become a bloody scene of multiple bombings. On Monday, a day after the attack, five survivors — including three officers — said that between 300 and 500 soldiers were missing and believed to be dead, kidnapped or in hiding.

The United Nations Climate Summit will begin in New York this Tuesday, but environmental activists didn’t wait. All day Sunday, they filled the streets of Manhattan for a march that featured Al Gore, New York City mayor Bill de Blasio, and various Hollywood actors. But they certainly didn’t act like a movement that was winning. There was a tone of fatalism in the comments of many with whom I spoke; they despair that the kind of radical change they advocate probably won’t result from the normal democratic process. It’s no surprise then that the rhetoric of climate-change activists has become increasingly

He was a leading figure in one of the biggest climate change marches to date. But it seems Robert F Kennedy Jr was not so forthcoming when it came to questions about his own carbon footprint. Confronted by a reporter asking if he would give up his phone and car, the environmental lawyer became visibly irate before grabbing the microphone and accusing her of ´destroying democracy´ as a member of the press. The interview in New York yesterday afternoon started with a conversation about the number of flyers produced for the event, which Kennedy Jr claimed was necessary to garner ´people power´.

It was once said, “religion is designed to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable.” Jesus’ parables – short stories with moral lessons – were likewise designed to afflict, to draw us in but leave us uncomfortable. These teachings can be read as being about divine love and salvation, sure. But, their first listeners – first century Jews in Galilee and Judea – heard much more challenging messages. Only when we hear the parables as Jesus’ own audience did can we fully experience their power and find ourselves surprised and challenged today. Here are four examples of Jesus’ teachings that everybody gets wrong: 1.

Lerner, who led the tax-exempt division of the IRS, was forced out of the agency after she found herself at the center of the scandal over the agency’s targeting of conservative groups
