In Queens, Immigrants Clash With
Residents of New Homeless Shelter

New York Times, by Kate Taylor & Jeffrey E. Singer

Original Article

Posted By:JoniTx, 7/26/2014 2:37:06 PM

The crowd of 500 included grandmothers and small children, Chinese immigrants and the president of a local Republican club, all shouting that the mayor had trampled their rights. The source of their anger? The 180 homeless families that New York City had moved into the defunct Pan American Hotel in Elmhurst, Queens. The residents felt nervous around the new arrivals, they said. There were reports of shoplifting from the Good Fortune Supermarket, public urination and panhandling — all things, they said, that had been unheard-of in their neighborhood until now. During the protest on Tuesday night, one of the organizers

What is left out of the story is we have a rapidly growing underclass and Obama is now importing tens or hundreds of thousands more. In 1910 people like this could open their own business or find work for low-skilled employees. Today they go straight to government dependency.

Who are these ´immigrants´? What category of immigrant visa did they qualify for, after waiting patiently in line for how many years? What a bunch of steaming horse dung!

I guess the word "immigrants" is the new euphemism for "illegal aliens," but the article doesn´t identify the immigration status of the protesters. If these Chinese protesters are here legally that makes the protest "Residents clash with homeless residents of the hotel." But we don´t know if the homeless people are illegal aliens or not. What a mess.

I grew up in nearby Jackson Heights. It was a nice place to live - 60 years ago.

The "immigrants" are Asians who live in that community, have jobs, support themselves and their families, and are concerned about the nature of the "homeless" persons who have been moved in large numbers into their midst.

The residents apparently live there rent-free and are provided with meals because this former hotel has no kitchens in its rooms.

Did no one read the article?

As for this facility, part of Di Blasio´s grand design for homogenizing NYC,

he Department of Homeless Services has said that it plans to use the hotel as a shelter as long it is needed.

We all know that for as long as this kind of a deal exists, it will be needed. This shelter will be there forever.

Not sure why NYT headlined this with "immigrants", except that according to the Wiki page on the Elmhurst neighborhood, it includes Chinatown and is home to a diverse immigrant working class population. The demographics show large percentages of Asians and Hispanics, but only 2% black. Part of the problem with this Diblasio homeless shelter is that the homeless being moved in there are fairly heavily black.

More info on Elmhurst here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elmhurst,_Queens

The residents of the neighborhood are afraid of these people. How would you feel about shoplifting in your local stores, public urination and panhandling?

PS. According to Wikipedia, Elmhurst has been middle class, not working class. Although I don´t think the terms are somehow exclusive. Photos of the locals show them to be pretty decent-looking.

I have a hunch that most middle class neighborhoods would pitch a fit if this "shelter" was foisted upon them, moving hundreds of indigent persons (and a few hundred kids to crowd the schodols) into their neighborhoods and encouraging them to never go to work or better themselves by giving them everything - including food - absolutely free.

You can give people free housing but you can´t change them.

Take note that some of those protesting can´t speak English even if they are upstanding citizens working.

When the U.S. military strikes, its leaders often choose colorful code names for the operation that sometimes stick in history, like Operation Overlord or Rolling Thunder or Desert Storm. Not this time. The U.S.-led air campaign against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria doesn´t have a name. "I know of no plans at this point to name it," Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby said Thursday. Since World War II, almost every U.S. military operation, large and small, has had a code name. And that name usually sticks when veterans talk about the conflicts in which they participated, such
