Michael Moore’s class act
New York Post, by Editorial

Original Article

Divorce is always tragic, especially when a couple was married as long as Michael Moore and his now-ex-wife, Kathleen Glynn. Glynn was a partner in film too, producing many of Moore’s best-known works, from “Sicko” to “Capitalism: A Love Story.” The marriage was officially ended this week. But in the process of securing their divorce, Moore and Glynn’s filings have again confirmed that the filmmaker who styles himself a champion of the working class has wealth that would be the envy of many a Wall Street banker. For all his proletarian pretenses, Moore is worth nearly $50 million, and doesn’t seem to mind owning all this

I´ve derived no small amount of pleasure at watching Michael Moore´s "everyman" persona shattered.

I wonder how much extra he had to pay the ex to keep her trap shut.

Why would you use "class" and "Michael Moore" in the same headline? And has anyone ever noticed that there are too damn many Michael Moores in this world?

Why Democrats Can’t Win the House
New York Times, by Nate Cohn    Original Article

WASHINGTON — Republicans and Democrats are struggling for control of the Senate in this November’s midterm elections. But there is no real fight for control of the House of Representatives. The Republicans are all but assured of retaining control of the House, despite last fall’s unpopular government shutdown and the party’s dismal ratings. “The Republican hold on the House is the graveyard of the hopes of Democratic policy change,” says Neera Tanden, president of the liberal-leaning Center for American Progress. It has stifled not just President Obama’s agenda, but also the aspirations of his coalition of young, secular and nonwhite voters, who

AUSTIN — It’s not just the glasses. Gov. Rick Perry has enrolled in policy school. Preparing for a possible presidential run, Perry has quietly set up weekly meetings with business titans and media heads and hunkered down with policy experts — many from George W. Bush’s administration and Mitt Romney’s campaign, according to a review of his official calendar by The Dallas Morning News. Perry has dialed the chief of Starbucks, dined with the chairman of JPMorgan Chase and deliberated with a former secretary of state. He has sat with billionaires Warren Buffett, Rupert Murdoch, David Koch and Moafaq Al Gaddah, a

Time magazine described the “Daisy” ad, which aired only once 50 years ago today, as “the most infamous, and most effective” political ad ever. A little girl appears on the screen, stoops, and picks a daisy. As she starts pulling the petals off the flower, she counts, “One, two, three…” Her little-girl voice fades away as an ominous male voice counts down from 10: It’s a minute long and appeared during Monday Night at the Movies on NBC. This is what happens next, as TIME described it: The countdown ends, and the screen erupts in atomic explosion, followed by the voice

America Has an Unannounced
ISIS Strategy, And It Involves Iran
Daily Beast, by Jacob Siegel    Original Article

Obama may say “we don’t have a strategy yet” for beating ISIS. Growing American operations on the ground paint a different picture—one with Iranian hues. The President hasn’t announced his strategy for dealing with ISIS yet, but there is a clear military approach taking shape in Iraq. On an operational level, the military intervention has shown some early success in using U.S. airpower to support local ground forces and halt ISIS’s advances. But the tension between tactics and strategy, methods and goals, is already starting to show. The battle we won yesterday could make it harder to win a war tomorrow. And

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A collection of outlaw country singer Waylon Jennings´ belongings will go on public auction this fall, including a rare 1958 motorcycle originally owned by Buddy Holly and locks of Willie Nelson´s braided hair. New York City-based auction house Guernsey´s will hold the auction of over 2,000 items Oct. 5 at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix. Jennings´ widow, Jessi Colter, said she was first approached by the auction house about selling the motorcycle, a red Ariel Cyclone. Jennings, who died in 2002 at age 64, started his career playing in Holly´s band. He had been set to fly on

President Barack Obama has one person to blame for looking indecisive, dithering and cowed by bungled political calculations: Barack Obama. He’s the one, after all, who strode into the Rose Garden on June 30 to announce that America couldn’t wait forever on immigration reform and pledging to move forward with a set of executive actions “before the end of summer.” He’s the one who spent that afternoon lighting into Republicans in Congress for punting and punting and punting again. Now he’s the one punting. Obama, appearing on “Meet the Press,” attributed his decision to punt immigration reform action until after Election Day to

Scottish independence: Poll puts Yes in lead

THE YES CAMPAIGN is ahead in the Scottish referendum battle for the first time, according to a poll, amid signs of infighting among senior figures backing the union. The YouGov research for the Sunday Times found 51% supported independence, compared to 49% who wanted to remain in the UK. The results are the latest evidence of a dramatic surge for the Yes Scotland campaign, which has seen the gap between the sides - once regularly in double digits - vanish in a matter of months. The YouGov poll showed the Yes vote increasing by four points, while No dropped by the same number. The

Mike, “beefcake” is indeed the mot juste to describe Victor Mature. After watching him and Hedy Lamarr in Samson and Delilah, Groucho Marx told Cecil B. DeMille that he had gotten the lead roles backwards, because “Victor Mature has much bigger knockers than Hedy Lamarr.” Lamarr was self-conscious about her modest endowment, and in the late 1930s she took her quest for enlargement to the polymathic George Antheil, a modernist composer who, when he wasn’t scoring compositions for aircraft engines, also wrote music for films and dabbled in many other areas, including endocrinology. He suggested hormone treatments, which did not help

Three CIA military contractors who were in the fight for their lives when our consulate in Benghazi was attacked on Sept. 11, 2012, gave a riveting first-hand account in a bombshell interview with Fox News anchor Bret Baier of what really happened that night. U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and three other Americans — including Winchester native Glen Doherty — lost their lives in the brutal attack by Islamist terrorists who launched RPGs, mortars and heavy fire into both the consulate and nearby annex — for 13 hours — while the White House and State Department ignored their cries for

WASHINGTON — The agreement signed last year by the Norway Ministry of Foreign Affairs was explicit: For $5 million, Norway’s partner in Washington would push top officials at the White House, at the Treasury Department and in Congress to double spending on a United States foreign aid program. But the recipient of the cash was not one of the many Beltway lobbying firms that work every year on behalf of foreign governments. It was the Center for Global Development, a nonprofit research organization, or think tank, one of many such groups in Washington that lawmakers, government officials and the news media have

In a conversation some years ago, the Rev. Jesse Jackson was comparing different levels of commitment to civil rights. “Think of a ham-and-egg breakfast,” he said. “The pig makes a much bigger commitment than the chicken.” After I stopped laughing, I saw his point. And now President Obama has reminded me of it. It is too kind to give the president credit for even a shaky commitment to a stable world order. Through hesitancy, dithering and denial, he didn’t even bother to fiddle while Rome burned. He golfed and went to fund-raisers. Now that much of the whole planet is burning, the president

Immigrant-rights groups reacted furiously Saturday after the White House made clear President Obama will not take unilateral action on immigration before November’s elections, nodding at the political realities of the issue as he punted on the key policy questions. With a number of key Senate races in GOP-leaning states, Democrats had feared that action now would anger voters and cost them control of the upper chamber, and had privately begged the White House to hold off on any move to halt deportations. But immigration activists said it’s the latest in a series of moves by Mr. Obama to shove their

Are you tired of being lied to yet? My guess is no... because Americans seem to have developed an infinite capacity for patience with a federal government that is increasingly mettlesome, mendacious and menacing.[SNIP] This last Friday night, an interview was aired which should convince American citizens once and for all that their government is not telling the truth about what happened in Libya two years ago. That’s been obvious to many of us for months, but despite the naming of a select committee by the U.S. House of Representatives to investigate what could have happened, what should have happened,
