Iraq’s Kurds want U.S. help to
hold off Islamic State extremists

Washington Post, by Loveday Morris

Irbil, Iraq — Each day, Kurdish security forces in northern Iraq skirmish with fearsomely armed Islamic State militants along their new, nearly 650-mile border. The Kurds have held their own so far. But without new arms supplies or financial assistance, their fight is unsustainable, a senior Kurdish official said. Masrour Barzani, the Kurdistan Regional Government’s intelligence and security chief, described his forces as “overstretched.” In an interview this week, he called on the United States to provide direct military assistance to his semiautonomous region, which he said has been left to fight the extremists unaided.

Since when was there an "Islamic State"? Seems the WaPo and others are pushing a narrative that should not exist.

The Kurds are probably folks we should help; they were among the folks Hussein abused and we killed Hussein. But our gov´t probably won´t help them because it is comprised of duplicitous, evil people.

Kurdistan and its peshmerga fighters are among the strongest US allies in that sorry region. I´d go so far as to say they are like the Israelis. In fact, the Kurds are also surrounded by enemies.

They could stop ISIS. But...

Neither the Obama administration nor Baghdad will help them. Read McGurk´s comments again to understand why. [Nationalism and homeland are dirty words anymore.]

The "Pottery Barn Rule" obligates us to help Iraq in its fight against ISIS.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell was prescient when he supposedly warned GWB, in private, against invading Iraq, citing the "Potery Barn Rule" (You break it, you own it). We broke Iraq by invading it, therefore we own it, so we must fix it when it´s broken as it is now due to the attack by ISIS.

The U.S. had expected the Iraqi army to do more against extremists, president says in acknowledgment of intelligence shortcomings. President Obama acknowledged that the U.S. underestimated the rise of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS, also called ISIL) and overestimated the ability of the Iraqi military to fend off the militant group in an interview that will air Sunday on 60 Minutes. The president was asked by 60 Minutes correspondent Steve Kroft about comments from Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, who has said the U.S. not only underestimated ISIS, it also overestimated the ability and will of the

MADRID: Tens of thousands of people gathered in Madrid on Saturday to witness the beatification of an early leader of the Roman Catholic organization Opus Dei. At a large outdoor mass, Cardinal Angelo Amato began the process that will confirm Alvaro del Portillo as a saint. Del Portillo succeeded Opus Dei´s founder, St. Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer, as leader of the organization. Opus Dei, once considered a secretive, right-wing, cult-like group that curried high favor within the church, has been trying to foster a friendlier image in recent years. For President Obama, the color of a man’s skin is far more important than the content of his character. On the night when a police officer was shot in a Missouri town torn by racial strife, the president donned a shiny tuxedo to attend a ritzy black awards dinner, where he said police nationwide are to blame for community mistrust, even claiming that “most Americans” think the country is racist. Remember, when Ferguson exploded in racial rage in August, Mr. Obama chose not to curtail his 15-day vacation, spending day after day on the golf course in the white-skinned, white-wined, millionaire playground
