James Brown and the
Making of ´Get On Up´

Wall Street Journal, by Steve Dougherty

"I was sitting right there," says Mick Jagger, pointing at a row of seats in the famous first balcony at New York´s Apollo Theater. He is remembering how, as a young fan back in England, he had worn out the grooves on his copy of James Brown´s 1963 album, "Live at the Apollo." Then, he says, he watched from the balcony in 1964 as the Hardest-Working Man in Show Business performed his splits and spins and dropped to his knees begging and screaming "Please Please Please." Fifty years later, Mr. Jagger is back at the Apollo, speaking in the historic

An ex-boyfriend who served in Vietnam was always a fan of James Brown. He said when other stars of that time would not entertain the troops in Vietnam - James Brown did and he could never forget him for that. I know from what little I have read, that James Brown held his employees to incredibly high standards.

Brown was in a gun fight with another performer at a club in the South. Stray bullets hit other patrons sending some to the hospital. Being shot "by James Brown" became bragging rights.

Sheriffs miffed about Biden’s

The sheriffs on both ends of the Roaring Fork Valley expressed their displeasure Sunday about the impact and costs that Vice President Joe Biden’s short visit to Aspen this past weekend placed on their communities and agencies. Helicopters buzzing above Aspen and multiple road closures along Highway 82 and Interstate 70 on Friday and Saturday accompanied Biden’s entourage, which involved a 40-car motorcade and at least nine local law enforcement agencies. Biden, who stayed in town for less than 24 hours, was here to speak at a private event involving journalist Charlie Rose and other entities, according to sources. “The responsible thing to

The three Afghan army officers who fled a joint military exercise on Cape Cod and were caught yesterday along the Canadian border at a Niagara Falls bridge probably feared going back home, one expert said. “It could have been something they cooked up once they were here,” said Scott Stewart of Stratfor, an international consulting firm. “By any measure, things are going to be grim (in Afghanistan) once the U.S. pulls out and especially for members of the security forces.” The AWOL Afghans went through an “extensive vetting process” before they were granted a visa, according to Max Blumenfeld, a spokesman for

Congressional Republicans cannot do much to make President Obama devise a credible strategy to defeat the Islamic State, or to counter Russian expansionism. There is one thing they can do, however, to contribute to the recovery of American strength overseas, particularly if they take the Senate this fall. They can make it clear that they intend for the next president to have the military means at his disposal to meet whatever threats we face. Those capabilities are steadily and quickly eroding. Budget cuts will force the Army to further scale back training for units based in the United States, allowing only

Kazantsev, who speaks three languages and maintained a 3.6 GPA while triple majoring in political science, geography, and global studies at Long Island’s Hofstra University, was booted with a friend from the school’s Alpha Phi sorority last year after allegedly hazing pledges, according to the website Jezebel.com. Kazantsev, the sorority’s head of recruitment, was exceptionally hard on new pledges, and made their lives “a living hell,” a tipster told the web site. Those in politics who spend much of their time railing about the dangers associated with anthropogenic climate change will often assert that the public largely shares their concerns about catastrophic climate shifts. You rarely hear from those oft-cited members of the public who are supposedly alarmed by climate change alarmism. Reason Magazine’s Kmele Foster, co-host of Fox Business Network’s The Independents, revealed why that is when he took to the People’s Climate March in New York City this weekend armed with a camera and a microphone. Unsurprisingly, the People’s March more resembled a throwback anti-capitalism

That’s why all our students should be eligible to join them.” The school has focused on issues with Greek life ever since a woman filed a lawsuit against Wesleyan two years ago

My mother was a child abuser. I was, too. In fact, growing up, pretty much every parent I knew abused their kids. Or so many of Adrian Peterson´s critics would have you believe. Peterson, a star of the Minnesota Vikings, was arrested recently for child abuse after hitting his 4-year-old son with a switch. A "switch," for those who don´t know, is a long twig. I should know, having been on the receiving end of quite a few. When no switch was available, mom was also known to employ a section of the orange plastic track from my Hot Wheels. Admittedly, a

And she’s spent hundreds of thousands of dollars defending herself against accusations she orchestrated a coverup in a scandal that has come to represent everything Americans hate about the IRS. Lois Lerner is toxic — and she knows it. But she refuses to recede into anonymity or beg for forgiveness for her role in the IRS tea party-targeting scandal. “I didn’t do anything wrong,” Lerner said in her first press interview since the scandal broke 16 months ago. “I’m

The former Internal Revenue Service official referenced the infamous cannibalistic serial killer as she broke her silence for the first time about last year’s IRS scandal.
