Russia massing 15,000 troops on

Russia has now amassed around 15,000 troops along the border with Ukraine, the U.S. ambassador to NATO said on Friday, offering a higher figure than one previously cited by the Pentagon. U.S. ambassador to NATO Douglas Lute offered the estimate during a security forum in Colorado, saying there were “now up again over about 15,000 Russian troops amassed along the border with Ukraine.” Meanwhile, the Pentagon said Friday that movement of Russian heavy-calibre artillery systems across the border into Ukraine is “imminent,” adding that Russia is escalating the military action there. A Pentagon spokesman, Colonel Steve Warren, said the U.S.

Ukraine is a sovereign nation. So is Kuwait. When Iraq invaded Kuwait, we gathered up 48 countries to repel Iraq. Forty of those countries contributed military forces in some manner, either for the invasion or for support.

What is different when Russia has stolen the Crimea and is gathering on Ukraine´s border?

Is the difference between a resolute President George H. W. Bush and a cowering President Barack Obama?

Putin has said that the greatest tragedy of the 20th century was that the USSR lost the Cold War.

This explains a lot.

I can not imagine how the people of eastern European countries are dealing with this, at least the older generations.

This area was literally eviscerated, utterly destroyed, crushed between the NAZI troops and then the advancing Soviet troops as the end of the War approached.

We simply can not begin to understand --well, we can begin to understand-- this era and the extremities of beastliness and evil subjected upon the peoples, civilians & soldiers alike, and then many people wreaking revenge.

I am struggling my way through Anne Applebaum´s The Cold War: The Crushing of Eastern Europe 1944-1956; and Marci Shore´s The Taste of Ashes: The Afterlife of Totalitarianism in Eastern Europe.

Most of my studies have been in the USSR, communism and related ideologies. The two books mentioned above catalogue the atrocities on an individual level, the people who suffered, and those who tortured and killed, AND the countless nameless, faceless people who died horrifically and whose remains were ground into the dirt and into oblivion.

Most Americans do not really know, and can´t comprehend for understandable reasons. These experiences, like when we glimpse the photos of the gulags and the NAZI death camps, stab at the heart.

The lack of education in history is dooming the ignorant to something equally horrible. It is not far away or unimaginable: look at Iraq, an example of many.

The ruthless, amoral, godless Russian troops will not be restrained, but will resemble the vulture-like scavengers picking through bloody and charred remains of the Malaysian airliner.

Airstrikes in Syria against the extremist Khorasan group were prompted by planning for an “imminent” terror attack on U.S. soil, the Pentagon said. As many as 500,000 people could be infected with Ebola virus disease by the end of January, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. The CDC estimate, due to be released this week, is based on “dynamic modeling” and assumes no additional aid to help battle the disease, a person familiar with the report told the Washington Post. Infectious-disease experts, aid workers and global health advocates said the number of Ebola cases is increasing much more rapidly than the World Health Organization, or WHO, had projected, especially in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, collectively the

Is Caring About Climate Change

On Sunday, a gaggle of queer folks will be joining the “People’s Climate March,” a rally in New York City projected to attract more than 100,000 attendees. Unfortunately, those who could help the cause the most are the least likely to show up. Marching under banners such as “Queers for the Climate,” LGBT climate activists are, first and foremost, agitating for action on climate change. But they are also saying something about what LGBT activism should be about, and saying something quite different from the (current) gay mainstream. The question is whether they can make an impact. The federal government is famously gigantic, but the president´s Cabinet is not, particularly if you narrow it to the inner circle that crafts military and national security strategy. One would assume that it wouldn´t be all that difficult to prepare a coherent approach to an international crisis, particularly as Cabinet members testify before Congress amidst deep skepticism of the White House´s strategy to destroy the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS, or in the administration´s preferred acronym, ISIL).
