Obama has his head in the sand
over America´s corporate exodus

When companies are heading for the door as fast as they decently can, you have to ask yourself why? President Obama´s approach is a rather different one; let´s just lock the door and stop them from leaving. On both sides of the US political divide, America´s apparent corporate exodus via so-called "inversion takeovers" is a source of growing concern. However, their response to the problem could hardly be more different. Broadly, Republicans want to deal with the issue by lowering corporate tax rates; but Democrats want to stop the outflow by changing the rules. As things stand, these allow companies

President Barack Obama is summoning Central American leaders to the White House to discuss the influx of young immigrants from their countries to the US, hoping to show presidential action even as Congress remains deeply split over proposals to stem the crisis on the border. The meeting comes as the administration is considering creating a pilot programme giving refugee status to young people from Honduras, White House officials said Thursday. The plan would involve screening youths in their home country to determine whether they qualify for refugee status. The programme would be limited in scope and would start in Honduras

Gout is almost unique in being a serious and debilitating condition still capable of raising sniggers of laughter and sneering derision towards those who suffer from it. It is commonly thought of as a historical anomaly, a disease rarely seen since the last portly Victorian gentleman died out, long ago banished from these shores by advances in diet and medicine. [Snip] Gout is a type of arthritis in which crystals form inside and around a joint, typically in the big toe. These crystals begin to form when there is too much uric acid--a waste product naturally produced by the body--in

Israel-Gaza conflict: Hamas calls for

Hamas leaders, both in Gaza and abroad, have called for the start of the third intifada - or Palestinian uprising - after violent riots with live fire erupted throughout Jerusalem and the West Bank last night. Violence flared up as thousands of Palestinians took to the streets, rioting and protesting Israel’s actions in Gaza. Approximately 10,000 people marched from Ramallah to Jerusalem, where they clashed with Israeli police. Two Palestinians were killed and approximately 200 were injured when protests turned violent near the Qalandiya checkpoint, just north of Jerusalem. In East Jerusalem and the Old City, 40 rioters were arrested.

Finally! After six long years, Britain´s
economy is now back to pre-crash
levels after the worst post-war recession

Britain’s economy has finally bounced back from the deepest recession in post-war history. New figures show the economy is now larger than before the 2008 financial crisis. Growth of 0.8 percent between April and June draws a line under the worst downturn the nation has faced. It has taken six long years to reverse the decline which began in early 2008 and saw the economy shrink by 7.2 percent by the middle of 2009. [Snip] But Labour has been quick to point out that the recovery has been much slower than the Tories predicted when the Coalition was formed in 2010.

A Pennsylvania doctor is being hailed a hero today after he seriously injured a patient who went on a shooting spree in his office. Dr. Lee Silverman, a psychiatrist, told police that the patient, identified as Richard Plotts, fatally shot a caseworker at their hospital complex before the doctor pulled out his own gun and exchanged fire with him and wounded him, a prosecutor said Thursday night. Silverman was grazed in the temple during the gunfight in his office, according to Delaware District Attorney Jack Whelan. Yeadon Police Chief Donald Molineux said that ´without a doubt, I believe the doctor

An earnest young man from Vice claims to have "crashed" the Heartland Institute´s 9th International Conference on Climate Change. Actually, no: he was given a press pass and afforded every courtesy because that´s how we Evil Deniers (TM) roll--we welcome open debate. [Snip] I just want to focus on one of his criticisms: the shock revelation that Evil Denier (TM) James Delingpole still doesn´t read peer-reviewed climate science papers. It´s true. I don´t. Let me explain--*sigh*--just one more time why not. 1. "Peer-review"--certainly where climate "science" is concerned--is a busted flush. We learned this from the Climategate emails. Here´s one

Notoriously angry actor Alec Baldwin is not apologizing over an incident that led to a disorderly conduct arrest in May. Baldwin told a Manhattan judge Thursday he´d rather pay a fine than say sorry over the encounter that started when police stopped him for riding a bicycle the wrong way down a one-way street. To a packed courtroom, a clearly amused Judge John Delury asked the actor, ´Can you stay out of trouble, Alexander?´ A rather sheepish Baldwin replied, ´Sure, sure.´ The judge then gave him an adjournment in contemplation of dismissal. ´Be a good boy from now on,´ Delury bantered. ´Have a

Texas Governor Rick Perry went on Hannity tonight to discuss the illegal immigrant crisis at the US southern border. Perry shared these shocking numbers on the current crisis. “Sean, there have been over the course of the last five years, since the fall of ’08, over 203,000 individuals who have come into Texas illegally who have been booked into our county jails. Those individuals have accounted for over 3,000 homicides and over 8,000 sexual assaults. We can’t afford to wait for Washington to secure this border. We’ve had enough.”

President Obama told Democratic donors Wednesday night that most Americans don’t have time to think about the details of the Benghazi terrorist attack or the problems with Obamacare. Speaking at a fundraiser at the Los Angeles home of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal” creator Shonda Rhimes, the president took his usual shots at the Republican Party, suggesting its members are focused on the wrong issues and frequently “obfuscate and they bamboozle and sometimes don’t say what’s true.” And because people are not familiar with the intricacies of many public-policy issues, Republicans can get away with such obfuscation, he said. “The Republican

I received a call from my sons’ school in March telling me that my oldest needed to be picked up early. He had been given a one-day suspension because he had thrown a chair. He did not hit anyone, but he could have, the school officials told me. JJ was 4 at the time. I agreed his behavior was inappropriate, but I was shocked that it resulted in a suspension. High-ranking U.S. officials said Wednesday that not only are Sunni radicals with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant “worse than al Qaeda,” but that the group has a message for the president: “We’re coming for you, Barack Obama.” Brett McGurk, the deputy assistant secretary of state, told lawmakers at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing that ISIL may have “changed its name,” but that it’s still al Qaeda. The president’s demeanor is worrying a lot of people. From the immigration crisis on the Mexican border to the Islamic State rising in Mesopotamia, Barack Obama seems totally detached from the world’s convulsions. When he does interrupt his endless rounds of golf, fundraising and photo ops, it’s for some affectless, mechanical, almost forced public statement. Regarding Ukraine, his detachment — the rote, impassive voice — borders on dissociation. His U.N. ambassador, Samantha Power, delivers an impassioned denunciation of Russia. Obama cautions that we not “get out ahead of the facts,” as if the facts of this case — Vladimir Putin’s

A year after news of the Monica Lewinsky scandal broke, former First Lady Hillary Clinton allegedly told a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist that it was former President Bill Clinton’s abusive mother that caused his unfaithfulness and sex addiction, a new book claims. That journalist was Lucinda Franks and while her latest book, “Timeless: Love, Morgenthau, and Me,” doesn’t have much to do about the Clintons, the part that does offers never before reported information from a 1999 interview with the former First Lady. The New York Daily News obtained parts of the book a month before its scheduled August 2014 release.

Colchester – Experts estimate there are nearly 300 adult loons living on Vermont´s lakes and ponds, up from just a couple dozen 30 years ago. On Saturday, more than 200 volunteers spread out across Vermont for the annual loon survey. The results of the survey are trickling in, but Eric Hanson of the Vermont Center for Ecostudies and the coordinator of the Vermont Loon Conservation Project, said there are many more birds now than just a few years ago. He said 15 years ago there were around 100 loons. In 1983, biologists counted only 29. "It is a decent, stable population. I'm hoping that actually things do start to level out.

The chairman of the Federal Election Commission today blasted Democratic colleagues opposed to his effort to protect conservative media after they imposed rules on the publisher of Rep. Paul Ryan´s new book, opening the door to future book regulations -- or even a ban. "By failing to affirm this publisher’s constitutional right, statutory right, to disseminate a political book free from FEC conditions and regulations, we have effectively asserted regulatory jurisdiction over a book publisher,” warned Chairman Lee E. Goodman, one of three Republicans on the six-person FEC.

ST. Death-penalty opponents say the execution of an Arizona inmate who took two hours to die shows that state experiments with different drugs and dosages are a callous trial-and-error process.
