Ohio State fires band director Jonathan
Waters over ‘sexualized’ culture

Columbus Dispatch [Columbus, OH], by Collin Binkley

Original Article

Ohio State University has fired the director of its marching band and is expanding an internal investigation that uncovered a deep culture of sexual harassment among students that reportedly has existed for years. The two-month investigation , triggered by the complaint of a parent, revealed a cascade of evidence that students routinely harassed one another –– often directed at new band members by older students –– and that director Jonathan Waters knew about it or should have known. (Snip) Examples of abuse include an annual midnight band practice at Ohio Stadium in which men and women were expected to march wearing

Comments:
Not even marching bands are exempt from inappropriate sexualization. This one was over the top, per the complaint; crude nicknames given according to breast size, all sorts of things.

FTA: Many, if not all, of the traditions predate Waters, investigators were told, and there is evidence that he fought some of them.

This behavior began and flourished during the 25 years someone else was in charge but the young guy who was making changes is fired? I hope he sues.

Wow! Read the comments. Big picture: our culture is becoming undone by a secular, amoral, post Christian cult that is determined to destroy all moral structure of human behavior. Not really news, I realize, but the pace is accelerating.

There are limited to the control a band director has over the band. If they get rid of all of the band members who´s going to dot the I? Looks like a gross over reaction based on what happened at State Penn. And although I´m not from Ohio it is the best darn band in the land. At my school the band members are so drunk they can´t remember the school fight song.

Not everyone enjoys parading around in their skivvies, even when they´re 19 and ripped. That should have been stopped years ago.

Maybe the ringleaders will reconsider their behavior now that it has cost their director his job.

Actions have consequences.

Waters was immersed in this disgusting culture, first as a student and then as a long time assistant and then director. Honestly, I do not understand how any college activity can be allowed to remain mired in such filth. What kind of professional would want to be associated with this? I have known quite a few music instructors (high school and college) and none would have tolerated such nonsense. I have no sympathy for Waters. Kudos to those colleagues who expressed their contrary opinions to him.

Sad, sad sign of the times that so many people are more offended at the firing than at the crude traditions.

Some other traditions: All new band members, or “rookies,” were given nicknames, many of which were sexually explicit. Rookies were forced to perform “tricks” on command. In one case, a female student was told to imitate a sexual act on the laps of other band members, including her brother.

And some here are OK with this ? According to the article, Waters has been in charge for the past two years, with complaints being ignored, and so of course the behavior will continue. The inmates are running the asylum.

Angry parents have complained after a primary school introduced unisex toilets in a bid to ´prevent transphobia´. Pupils were shocked to discover they had to share the ´gender neutral´ toilets at the start of the school year, sparking concerns from parents. Many say their children do not want to use facilities split with the opposite sex and it makes them feel ´uncomfortable´. Harbour Primary School in Newhaven, East Sussex, has defended the move, which it says is about ´preventing transphobia´. There are around 500 pupils at the school for three to 11-year-olds.
