LOS ANGELES — President Barack Obama met privately Thursday with four former gang members and the head of a Los Angeles nonprofit that is helping them turn around their lives. The brief meeting with Homeboy Industries founder Father Gregory Boyle and the four teenagers who all served time for their gang-related activities took place after Obama´s speech at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College. The teens stood in a semi-circle and the president approached each one, asked his name and age, and took a picture with him. Obama then gave them a short pep talk, telling them how he had been raised

Benefits claimants will undergo interviews to assess whether they have a psychological resistance to work, the employment minister reveals today. Unemployed people will be subject to attitude profiling to judge whether they are “determined”, “bewildered” or “despondent” about taking a job, under plans prepared by Esther McVey. Those that are less mentally prepared for life at work will be subject to more intensive coaching at the job centre, while those who are optimistic – such as graduates or those who have recently been made redundant – while be placed on less rigorous regimes.

Employment: You might want to recork that bottle of champagne that you planned to open after another big jobs report. Reality has intervened, with jobs rising a disappointing 142,000 in August. The weakness is no fluke. Many economists and politicians treated the six-month string of 200,000-plus job gains as a major achievement. But in fact it was merely a slight pickup in the pace of what has been an unusually slow recovery in the U.S. since the recession ended in June 2009. The August jobs report is an example. Unemployment edged down to 6.1% from 6.2% — "good" news until you realize

Former Vice President Dick Cheney can be a polarizing figure even six years out of office. (snip)“Shortly thereafter, President Obama began to dismantle the security policies that had kept the nation safe,” the Cheney biography stated. “His policy decisions have led to a reversal of the gains America made in the war on terror in countries like Iraq and Afghanistan, and a weakening of America across the globe.” Sharon Wilkinson, executive director of the state bar, said Cheney’s office provided the biographical information and that the bar ran it without editing it.

LAS VEGAS — Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Thursday the U.S. should become what she called the world’s 21st-century clean energy superpower, during remarks resembling both a campaign speech and a call to action at the annual National Clean Energy Summit in Las Vegas. Clinton cast the threat of global climate change as real, and “the most consequential, urgent, sweeping collection of challenges” faced by the nation and the world. “The data is unforgiving,” the former New York senator and first lady said to a standing room crowd of more than 800 people at a Las Vegas

Thousands of fast food workers across the United States were walking off the job Thursday morning, affecting restaurants in about 150 cities nationwide. It was just the latest in a series of coordinated strikes that have taken place since November 2012, although Thursday’s strike may be the first such action to include large-scale civil disobedience. Organizers would not confirm on the record whether civil disobedience and arrests would take place in any of the cities affected by the strikes, but fast food workers have repeatedly vowed to take whatever measures are necessary in order to win a $15 hourly wage and union

The group, which has captured territory in Syria and Iraq, released a video on Tuesday of Sotloff being beheaded. U.S. officials confirmed its authenticity on Wednesday. President Barack Obama vowed to "degrade and destroy" the group. Americans have become more focused on securing the border and less interested in providing legal standing to undocumented immigrants living in the USA, according to a poll released Wednesday. In the wake of news reports about tens of thousands of Central American children rushing across the nation´s southwestern border, a new Pew Research Center survey found that 33% of Americans want to focus on border security, 23% prefer a pathway to citizenship, and 41% want both. FRIENDSHIP, Maine -- Imagine Cape Cod without cod. Maine without lobster. The region´s famous rocky beaches invisible, obscured by constant high waters. It´s already starting to happen. The culprit is the warming seas - and in particular the Gulf of Maine, whose waters are heating up faster than 99 percent of the world´s oceans, scientists say. Long-established species of commercial fish, like cod, herring and northern shrimp, are departing for colder waters. Black sea bass, blue crabs and new species of squid - all highly unusual for the Gulf - are turning up in fishermen´s nets. The Gulf of Maine´s warming reflects broader

The Internal Revenue Service has lost emails from five more employees who are part of congressional probes into the treatment of conservative groups that applied for tax-exempt status, the tax service disclosed Friday. The tax agency said in June that it could not locate an untold number of emails to and from Lois Lerner, who headed the IRS division that processes applications for tax-exempt status. The revelation set off a new round of investigations and congressional hearings. On Friday, the IRS issued a report to Congress saying the agency also lost emails from five other employees related to the probe,

The top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee on Friday said new allegations that U.S. commandos were ordered to “stand down” during the 2012 attack in Benghazi, Libya, aren’t supported by findings from House and Senate investigators. Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Md.) said lawmakers never came across evidence indicating the station chief had told his team to “stand down” and abort a

It was only a few weeks ago that Gannett did the same. USA Today is Gannett´s flagship publication and enjoys the highest circulation of any other American newspaper.
