How to Invent a Person Online

On April 8, 2013, I received an envelope in the mail from a nonexistent return address in Toledo, Ohio. Inside was a blank thank-you note and an Ohio state driver’s license. The ID belonged to a 28-year-old man called Aaron Brown—6 feet tall and 160 pounds with a round face, scruffy brown hair, a thin beard, and green eyes. His most defining feature, however, was that he didn’t exist. I know that because I created him. As an artist, I’ve long been interested in identity and the ways it is represented. My first serious body of work, Springfield, used the concept of

The shift from being consumer to product was swift, and for many, unnoticed. But companies like Facebook, Twitter, Google, Yahoo, etc. now depend on selling contact and behavior info about their registered users as a stable source of revenue, and marketing giants are all too eager to pay them for it. I forfeit up to $100 a week in discounts by opting to forego any ´rewards card´ membership that requires actual info that could personally identify me as the customer. (Many stores now offer their promotional deals/sales only to customers willing to be identified and tracked.)

If you or I treated someone the way these companies treat consumers, we´d risk stalking charges.

Sheriffs miffed about Biden’s

Aspen Daily News [CO], by Carolyn Sackariason    Original Article

The sheriffs on both ends of the Roaring Fork Valley expressed their displeasure Sunday about the impact and costs that Vice President Joe Biden’s short visit to Aspen this past weekend placed on their communities and agencies. Helicopters buzzing above Aspen and multiple road closures along Highway 82 and Interstate 70 on Friday and Saturday accompanied Biden’s entourage, which involved a 40-car motorcade and at least nine local law enforcement agencies. Biden, who stayed in town for less than 24 hours, was here to speak at a private event involving journalist Charlie Rose and other entities, according to sources. “The responsible thing to

The three Afghan army officers who fled a joint military exercise on Cape Cod and were caught yesterday along the Canadian border at a Niagara Falls bridge probably feared going back home, one expert said. “It could have been something they cooked up once they were here,” said Scott Stewart of Stratfor, an international consulting firm. “By any measure, things are going to be grim (in Afghanistan) once the U.S. pulls out and especially for members of the security forces.” The AWOL Afghans went through an “extensive vetting process” before they were granted a visa, according to Max Blumenfeld, a spokesman for

She starts by imagining the moments she would have shared with her daughter had she been born, then takes to repeating “I am not ashamed,” as if trying to convince herself by incantation that she really isn’t. Congressional Republicans cannot do much to make President Obama devise a credible strategy to defeat the Islamic State, or to counter Russian expansionism. There is one thing they can do, however, to contribute to the recovery of American strength overseas, particularly if they take the Senate this fall. They can make it clear that they intend for the next president to have the military means at his disposal to meet whatever threats we face. Those capabilities are steadily and quickly eroding. Budget cuts will force the Army to further scale back training for units based in the United States, allowing only

Newly crowned Miss America Kira Kazantsev was kicked out of her college sorority for abusive hazing, according to a report. Kazantsev, who speaks three languages and maintained a 3.6 GPA while triple majoring in political science, geography, and global studies at Long Island’s Hofstra University, was booted with a friend from the school’s Alpha Phi sorority last year after allegedly hazing pledges, according to the website Jezebel.com. Kazantsev, the sorority’s head of recruitment, was exceptionally hard on new pledges, and made their lives “a living hell,” a tipster told the web site. Those in politics who spend much of their time railing about the dangers associated with anthropogenic climate change will often assert that the public largely shares their concerns about catastrophic climate shifts. You rarely hear from those oft-cited members of the public who are supposedly alarmed by climate change alarmism. Reason Magazine’s Kmele Foster, co-host of Fox Business Network’s The Independents, revealed why that is when he took to the People’s Climate March in New York City this weekend armed with a camera and a microphone. Unsurprisingly, the People’s March more resembled a throwback anti-capitalism

Fraternities at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, must start accepting women and all residential fraternities must become fully co-educational over the next three years, the school’s Board of Trustees has ruled. The decision was made “with equality and inclusion in mind,” school President Michael Roth and Trustee Chairman Joshua Boger wrote in an email to students on Monday, Business Insider reported. “Our residential Greek organizations inspire loyalty, community and independence. That’s why all our students should be eligible to join them.” The school has focused on issues with Greek life ever since a woman filed a lawsuit against Wesleyan two years ago

My mother was a child abuser. I was, too. In fact, growing up, pretty much every parent I knew abused their kids. Or so many of Adrian Peterson´s critics would have you believe. Peterson, a star of the Minnesota Vikings, was arrested recently for child abuse after hitting his 4-year-old son with a switch. A "switch," for those who don´t know, is a long twig. I should know, having been on the receiving end of quite a few. When no switch was available, mom was also known to employ a section of the orange plastic track from my Hot Wheels. Admittedly, a

The United Nations Climate Summit will begin in New York this Tuesday, but environmental activists didn’t wait. All day Sunday, they filled the streets of Manhattan for a march that featured Al Gore, New York City mayor Bill de Blasio, and various Hollywood actors. But they certainly didn’t act like a movement that was winning. There was a tone of fatalism in the comments of many with whom I spoke; they despair that the kind of radical change they advocate probably won’t result from the normal democratic process. It’s no surprise then that the rhetoric of climate-change activists has become increasingly

He was a leading figure in one of the biggest climate change marches to date. But it seems Robert F Kennedy Jr was not so forthcoming when it came to questions about his own carbon footprint. Confronted by a reporter asking if he would give up his phone and car, the environmental lawyer became visibly irate before grabbing the microphone and accusing her of ´destroying democracy´ as a member of the press. The interview in New York yesterday afternoon started with a conversation about the number of flyers produced for the event, which Kennedy Jr claimed was necessary to garner ´people power´.

It was once said, “religion is designed to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable.” Jesus’ parables – short stories with moral lessons – were likewise designed to afflict, to draw us in but leave us uncomfortable. These teachings can be read as being about divine love and salvation, sure. But, their first listeners – first century Jews in Galilee and Judea – heard much more challenging messages. Only when we hear the parables as Jesus’ own audience did can we fully experience their power and find ourselves surprised and challenged today. Here are four examples of Jesus’ teachings that everybody gets wrong: 1.
