Loon population rebounding in Vermont
Associated Press, by Staff

Colchester – Experts estimate there are nearly 300 adult loons living on Vermont´s lakes and ponds, up from just a couple dozen 30 years ago. On Saturday, more than 200 volunteers spread out across Vermont for the annual loon survey. The results of the survey are trickling in, but Eric Hanson of the Vermont Center for Ecostudies and the coordinator of the Vermont Loon Conservation Project, said there are many more birds now than just a few years ago. He said 15 years ago there were around 100 loons. In 1983, biologists counted only 29. "It is a decent, stable population. I'm hoping that actually things do start to level out.

OK, I grew up in Vermont, and loons were rare then. When I go home to visit, they are everywhere, but I still love the memory of a conservative Vermont. Presently, it is infected with “progressives”, while the real Vermonters live in trailer parks, having sold their land to people from Connecticut, Mass., New York etc, each of which opened an “antique” store to sell junk to tourists. In New Hampshire, actual loons are on every lake, but haven’t infected the local populations particularly. Any small lake will support only a few loon pairs. But seriously, they are lovely birds, and can swim under water for thousands of feet.

There may be no polar bears (which is doubtful) but there are plenty of loons, coyotes, wolves and chicken littles. The species winning the grand prize of Come-backs? The snakes, most of which will be found in the halls of congress, Washington, DC

So much for all that outrage. Nearly 90 percent of Americans say the recent outcry about domestic violence in the NFL hasn’t changed how much professional football they watch — and less than a third of the nation believes NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell should resign. That’s the result of an exclusive NBC News/Marist poll, which also finds that a majority of Americans – including nearly six in 10 self-described football fans – say they disapprove of the way the NFL has handled the domestic-violence allegations. The poll comes after a series of damaging stories indicating that NFL officials had turned

DENVER — Republican Rep. Cory Gardner is leading Democratic Sen Mark Udall in Colorado, according to a new independent poll released Thursday. The 48-40 Gardner lead among likely voters in The Quinnipiac University Poll contrasts with two other independent polls released earlier this month that found Udall tied or slightly ahead in the race. It is from the same pollster that found Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper 10 points behind his Republican challenger, a finding that also conflicted with other polls that have shown that race essentially tied. The Quinnipiac poll surveyed 1,211 voters by telephone from Sept. 10-15 and has

One has to wonder just how often members of President Barack Obama´s national security team talk with each other. The federal government is famously gigantic, but the president´s Cabinet is not, particularly if you narrow it to the inner circle that crafts military and national security strategy. One would assume that it wouldn´t be all that difficult to prepare a coherent approach to an international crisis, particularly as Cabinet members testify before Congress amidst deep skepticism of the White House´s strategy to destroy the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS, or in the administration´s preferred acronym, ISIL). BEIRUT - The militant Islamic State group released a video warning the United States that its fighters are waiting for it in Iraq if President Barack Obama sends troops there, as his top general said may happen if the current strategy of airstrikes fails. The slick 52-second video entitled "Flames of War" shows militants blowing up tanks and images of wounded U.S. soldiers. It then shows a clip of Obama saying that combat troops will not be returning to Iraq, ending with a text overlay that reads "fighting has just begun."
