Nathan Lane says giving gay roles
to only gay actors is ‘madness’

Gay actors shouldn’t have a monopoly on gay roles, award-winning stage and screen actor Nathan Lane said. Lane, who is gay and has played both straight and gay characters, was asked the question at a TV critics’ meeting Tuesday. He was there to discuss PBS’ presentation of the Broadway play The Nance, in which he stars. “We just had The Normal Heart (with) Mark Ruffalo, fantastic job. I think who’s right for the part and most talented” should be hired, Lane said. Ruffalo, who is straight, starred as a gay man in the AIDS drama for HBO. “That way only madness lies. …

He has a point. If you´re right for the part, you´re right for the part. Michael Caine, Al Pacino, and Rory Calhoun portrayed gay characters. And Rock Hudson did a credible job of portraying straight men.

Whether they´re played by gay actors or straight actors, I´ve seen quite enough gay roles already, enough for a lifetime.

People can do what they want in the bedroom, but I don´t need to know about it. In fact, I´d rather not know. If they´re in-your-face about it, as these so-called "gay roles" often are, I´m offended.

Michael Douglass and that other kid did a pretty good performance in "Behind the Candelabra", but they looked like two guys trying to act gay.
This kind of reminds me of all the hoopla we heard when Caucasians played Asian or American Indian characters and those groups thought the opposite of what Lane is talking about here.

We were lower class, but not poor, or at least we didn´t think so. In the early ´50s, not all that many people were rich, and I didn´t know any of them. President Obama will kick off his midterm campaign push in October, according to senior administration officials, with events benefitting individual vulnerable Democratic candidates. Obama will ramp up his public campaign efforts on behalf of congressional Democrats, but — in a possible acknowledgement of the president´s flagging approval ratings — the effort will be less intensive than what former President George W. Bush undertook during the 2002 midterm election cycle. That fall, Bush made more than 40 campaign speeches for dozens of congressional candidates. President Barack Obama´s nominee to be the government´s chief civil rights attorney has officially resigned from consideration for the post.
