Cuomo’s Office Hobbled
State Ethics Inquiries

New York Times, by Susanne Craig, William K . Rashbaum*

With Albany rocked by a seemingly endless barrage of scandals and arrests, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo set up a high-powered commission last summer to root out corruption in state politics. It was barely two months old when its investigators, hunting for violations of campaign-finance laws, issued a subpoena to a media-buying firm that had placed millions of dollars’ worth of advertisements for the New York State Democratic Party. The investigators did not realize that the firm, Buying Time, also counted Mr. Cuomo among its clients, having bought the airtime for his campaign when he ran for governor in 2010. Word that the

Not to venture off the political path but we out here in flyover country ask this question for all our lofo voters. Are Cuomo and chef? Sandra Lee still an item? In this neck of the woods one seldom hears mention of the two.

Note that the Times´ view is that Cuomo is hobbled not by a lack of ethics, but by the investigations into the corruption.

And Cuomo does what any corrupt politician would do: appoint a ´blue ribbon commission´ to "root out corruption".
The commission´s job would be very easy if they´d simply start at the top.
Like the man said, "If you want to kill a dog, you don´t cut off it´s tail - you cut off it´s head."

Washington -- A CIA assessment puts the number of ISIS fighters at possibly more than three times the previous estimates. The terror group that calls itself the Islamic State "can muster between 20,000 and 31,500 fighters across Iraq and Syria," a CIA spokesman told CNN on Thursday. Analysts and U.S. officials initially estimated there were as many as 10,000 fighters, including those who were freed from prisons by ISIS, and Sunni loyalists who have joined the fight as the group advanced across Iraq. "This new total reflects an increase in members because of stronger recruitment since June following battlefield successes and the declaration

Watch your back, Baghdadi. As part of his expanded campaign against the Islamic State, President Obama has authorized the U.S. military to target Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the driving force behind the violent extremist group, it was reported Thursday. Until now, restrictions imposed by the President prevented the military from going after the group’s leaders. But the limits were lifted as part of Obama’s new offensive against the group, also known as ISIS, the Washington Post reported. A Pentagon spokesman on Thursday acknowledged a shift in strategy but declined to comment whether Baghdadi was

Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide Friday, the finale of an emotional 6 ½-month trial in the shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. The conviction comes just a day after Judge Thokozile Masipa pronounced the double amputee track star not guilty of murder. Masipa also found the double amputee track star guilty of one of three firearms charges. He was convicted of firing a gun in a restaurant — an incident not related to the Steenkamp shooting — but not of possession of ammunition or a separate count that he fired out of the sunroof of a

Could President Obama’s military move against ISIS derail the Republican freight train that appeared to be barreling toward victory in the midterm elections? It’s possible, but not very likely. Until Wednesday night’s speech, the president was taking a political beating on foreign policy that had a toxic effect on his approval ratings. And that was a major drag on vulnerable Democrats, especially those red-state senators trying to hang on and keep the chamber from tipping to the GOP. But now, whether or not Obama is leading from behind, as his critics say, he has committed to using U.S. military power against the terrorists.

Throughout his presidency, President Obama has emphasized one point while talking about Islamist extremists: They are not practicing Islam, he has said, they are perverting it. He took that a step further Wednesday night. While announcing that he´s expanding the campaign against the Islamic State extremist group into Syria, Obama said flatly that this group, which is trying to install a caliphate in the Middle East, "is not Islamic." He didn´t say they are perverting their religion; he said they´re not even part of that religion. CHICAGO – The future of the Wisconsin’s governor’s race could hang on a federal appeals court in Chicago hearing a potentially explosive case today. Depending on how the three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit decides, the ruling will have major impact on the scope of political speech, the role of voter’s donations in politics, and the fate of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, a 2016 Republican presidential hopeful. The governor’s race is virtually tied, according to recent polls, and the court’s ruling may move undecided voters. The investigation, critics say, has paralyzed conservative advocacy in Wisconsin, giving

If there´s one thing America´s misadventure in Iraq from 2003 to 2011 taught everyone, it is that things can go terribly wrong when the U.S. intervenes in a foreign environment with deep sectarian divisions, an ineffectual government, armed factions, and the general complexities of the Middle East. So now, Barack Obama plans to step up U.S. involvement in Iraq with more airstrikes and an effort to strengthen and better organize Iraqi and Kurdish military forces, as well as some Syrian rebels. In his address to the nation Wednesday night, the president laid out a multi-point proposal for action. He also had

Left-wing filmmaker Michael Moore savaged President Obama in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, calling him “a huge disappointment” and claiming he’ll be remembered only as the nation’s first black president and nothing else. Moore sat down for a video interview at the Toronto Film Festival on Tuesday to discuss the 25th anniversary of Roger and Me, Moore’s documentary about Detroit’s General Motors that launched his career. When the interviewer asked whether Moore agreed with President Obama’s 2012 assertion that he’d “saved Detroit” by bailing out General Motors and Chrysler, the filmmaker recoiled. “Detroit, at this point, would stand a better chance

The rising threat from Islamic extremists has set the stage for Republicans to make a splash with the launch of their Benghazi investigation next week. The media glare had largely fallen away from the probe into the terror attack on U.S. facilities in Benghazi, Libya, that left Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans dead. But with the second anniversary of the attack looming on Thursday, and a new book by U.S. security contractors claiming a CIA station chief ordered them to “stand down” during the assault, the start of the investigation into Benghazi is poised to become a major event. “ISIS

Often in U.S. history, the president stands virtually alone at the precipice of war. He gathers Congress for an address to an uncertain nation and declares, "Here is why we must fight." This is not one of those times. In a few hours, President Obama will stand before a public that, without his leadership, largely determined that the Islamic State must be stopped. What they want to hear from their commander-in-chief is, "I´m ready to fight." With that dynamic in mind, here are five things to watch for tonight: Does the president recognize the Islamic State as a serious threat? Obama compared

Berlin - President Obama´s declaration of war against the terrorist group known as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria marks a decisive break in the American constitutional tradition. Nothing attempted by his predecessor, George W. Bush, remotely compares in imperial hubris. Mr. Bush gained explicit congressional consent for his invasions (Snip) Mr. Obama may rightly be frustrated by gridlock in Washington, but his assault on the rule of law is a devastating setback for our constitutional order. His refusal even to ask the Justice Department to provide a formal legal pretext for the war on ISIS is astonishing.

As we suspected, President Obama tried in his Wednesday-night speech to make it sound like he was doing something new when he, in fact, he is not. Moreover, in describing his response, he made plain that he doesn’t take the threat to the homeland seriously. For a threat his advisers say is greater than that posed by al-Qaeda after 2001, he proposed measures suitable for Yemen and Somalia. No, really — that’s the plan. For starters, the president doesn’t believe the Islamic State is a current threat to the U.S.: “So ISIL poses a threat to the people of Iraq

Rarely has a president faced a greater challenge in establishing his credibility for a new foreign-policy move than Barack Obama did in his nationally televised speech tonight. A CNN poll earlier this week found that just 30 percent of voters thought Obama had presented a clear plan for fighting the Islamic State. While Obama now pledges to ask Congress to train and aid Syrian rebels who would fight the group, voters remember that he backed similar plans in Syria in 2013, when his advisers saw Syrian president Bashar Assad as the major threat. Qua speech, Barack Obama’s address Wednesday on the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria was surprisingly terrible: a disorganized mess, insincere and unconvincing. To appreciate just how bad and bizarre it was, compare the president’s speech announcing a new air campaign in Iraq and Syria to Dwight Eisenhower’s 1958 statement on his decision to intervene in Lebanon with 14,000—14,000!—troops. The statement contains no chest-thumping about America’s leadership in science and medicine. No pivot to the auto industry and medical research. Eisenhower simply explained what had been done, and why.

President Obama just announced that he is bringing a counter-terrorism strategy to an insurgency fight. He was at pains to repeat the phrase “counter-terror” four times in a short speech. Noting that ISIL is not a state (partly because the international community thankfully does not recognize it), he declared, “ISIL is a terrorist organization, pure and simple. And it has no vision other than the slaughter of all who stand in its way.” Neither of those sentences, unfortunately, is true.
