Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg (I) is flying to Israel tonight on the Israeli airline El Al to protest a Federal Aviation Administration ban on U.S. carriers flying to or from Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv. Bloomberg made the announcement on his Web site. He urged the FAA to change its decision. "This evening I will be flying on El Al to Tel Aviv to show solidarity with the Israeli people and to demonstrate that it is safe to fly in and out of Israel," Bloomberg said in a statement. "Ben Gurion is the best protected

Comments:
Underscoring what many of us thought. The FAA decision was a political decision to broadside Israel.

Flying to Israel has not been one of my travel choices, and I´m no fan of Bloomberg, but.....good for him!

The FAA ban is a first and foremost an attempt by the 0bama regime to punish Israel.

WASHINGTON — Homeland Security officials warned Wednesday they don’t have a full picture of the Americans and Europeans heading to Syria to train with ISIS and therefore can’t stop them from coming into the US. “We don’t have a fulsome picture in all cases,” said Jennifer Lasley, a deputy undersecretary at the Department of Homeland Security. “It does concern us,” added Troy Miller, an acting assistant commissioner with US Customs and Border Protection. House Homeland Security Committee chairman Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) called the situation worrisome. “You don’t know what you don’t know. We only have estimates of how many

Bush was to bring democracy to the Middle East. Obama wants only to beat back a threat, a far more modest and realistic goal. “The United States has a well-established tendency to overreact and to shoot itself in the foot,” Harvard Professor Stephen M. Free money for everyone! With weak job growth, rising poverty, and the rich continuing to devour nearly all economic growth, it´s an idea that is gaining more credence. Arguments for a universal basic income (UBI) — in which everyone without exception would receive an equal stipend — have flourished in policy-centric areas of the internet, including The Week. Advocates of UBI see it as a blunter, more effective means of reducing poverty and shrinking the inequality gap. But even if UBI proponents are right on the merits, Tyler Cowen argues that the politics of the issue are not favorable. Under

Washington — President Obama’s speech Wednesday on the growing threat from Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria represents a major test of his leadership. It’s being billed as an address to the nation, but it will reach far beyond that. Mr. Obama will be speaking foremost to the American people –Democrats, Republicans, and independents – in the heat of the midterm campaign. And it comes at a time of heightened sensitivity to terrorism, the eve of the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, and the second anniversary of the attack on the US mission in Benghazi, Libya. As we suspected, President Obama tried in his Wednesday-night speech to make it sound like he was doing something new when he, in fact, he is not. Moreover, in describing his response, he made plain that he doesn’t take the threat to the homeland seriously. For a threat his advisers say is greater than that posed by al-Qaeda after 2001, he proposed measures suitable for Yemen and Somalia. No, really — that’s the plan. Rarely has a president faced a greater challenge in establishing his credibility for a new foreign-policy move than Barack Obama did in his nationally televised speech tonight. A CNN poll earlier this week found that just 30 percent of voters thought Obama had presented a clear plan for fighting the Islamic State. While Obama now pledges to ask Congress to train and aid Syrian rebels who would fight the group, voters remember that he backed similar plans in Syria in 2013, when his advisers saw Syrian president Bashar Assad as the major threat. President Obama just announced that he is bringing a counter-terrorism strategy to an insurgency fight. He was at pains to repeat the phrase “counter-terror” four times in a short speech. Noting that ISIL is not a state (partly because the international community thankfully does not recognize it), he declared, “ISIL is a terrorist organization, pure and simple. And it has no vision other than the slaughter of all who stand in its way.” Neither of those sentences, unfortunately, is true. Throughout his presidency, President Obama has emphasized one point while talking about Islamist extremists: They are not practicing Islam, he has said, they are perverting it. He took that a step further Wednesday night. While announcing that he´s expanding the campaign against the Islamic State extremist group into Syria, Obama said flatly that this group, which is trying to install a caliphate in the Middle East, "is not Islamic." Qua speech, Barack Obama’s address Wednesday on the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria was surprisingly terrible: a disorganized mess, insincere and unconvincing. To appreciate just how bad and bizarre it was, compare the president’s speech announcing a new air campaign in Iraq and Syria to Dwight Eisenhower’s 1958 statement on his decision to intervene in Lebanon with 14,000—14,000!—troops. The statement contains no chest-thumping about America’s leadership in science and medicine. No pivot to the auto industry and medical research. Eisenhower simply explained what had been done, and why.
