Great article! In it, I found myself agreeing with Jonah (as usual) and with Barack Obama (horrors!). FTA: "Even Barack Obama, shortly before he became president, derided Ex-Im as “little more than a fund for corporate welfare.” This tees up a way of understanding "life in these [dis]United States" based on what Jonah has written.

There are four distinct groups in the US. Three of them are on welfare; the fourth provides that welfare.

The three forms of welfare are Upper, Middle and Lower Class welfare. They are defined thusly:

- Upper: Recipients of corporate welfare, crony capitalists, and others such as those described by Jonah.

- Middle: Government workers, politicians, and all others who "earn" a livelihood from taxes.

- Lower: All our truly unfortunate and "unfortunate" (gimmedats) fellow citizens who depend on us to keep them alive.

The fourth group (us, fellow LDotters) are the ones staggering under this welfare burden. I wonder what would happen if we shrugged....

The real system of government in our country is no longer that written in the constitution. We define acceptable behavior via the tax code and regulatory agencies. We decide who gets funding and who does not via the Ex-Im bank. Business can purchase their tax rate, access to funds, and level of regulation compliance by contributing to the right politician. Often that´s someone on "The Left" many times it is not.

Business is doing exactly what they should be doing, as Ayn Rand would expect and want them to do. Its the manner in which politicians have strayed from the constitutional rule of law to create this hybrid that get´s them rich. They too act in their own self interest. Its we the people who have allowed the system that keeps the playing field level to break down who are at fault.

With so many people getting rich from the corrupt system, no wonder the Tea party is so feared and demonized. They as did our founders have the answer.

Well put, Mr Goldberg!
The Third (Thousand Year) Reich had a relationship with Krupp and IG Farben much like that between Obama´s (30 Month) Reich and GE, Boeing and other teat-suckers, facilitated by the Ex-Im facility.

Yes, the left threatens everyone to their whim and businesses go along to get along rather than tell the left to GO TO Hades.

The battle today between the Salafist al-Qaeda hydra and Shia Twelvers in Iraq became inevitable late November 2013 in Geneva, when America agreed to suspend some sanctions against Iran and allow billions of dollars to flow into the coffers of the clerics who rule Persia and pull the strings of Bashar al-Assad. (Snip) Despite appearances, the real significance of Geneva may not be the opening of P5+1 nuclear negotiations with Hassan Rouhanni, but as a marker in history of the moment when Washington ceded Iraq to Tehran.

State Department spokesman Jen Psaki makes me psick. If you read P.G. Wodehouse, you know the “P” in her name is silent, as in “phthisis,” “psychic” and “ptarmigan” (as Wodehouse’s Psmith explains). And Psaki’s colleague Marie Harf makes me barf. Together Psaki and Harf give the catastrophic foreign policy of the Obama administration a lighter than air, Valley Girl kind of feel. It’s a novel use of expressive form. Paul Mirengoff explores their weightlessness in the adjacent post. As Paul recounts, Harf came to the defense of Psaki when Bill O’Reilly had the temerity to utter pslightly pscathing words about Psaki

Less than 48 hours ahead of a planned address to the nation on how the U.S. plans to combat Islamic State terrorists operating in Iraq and Syria, President Obama dined at the White House Monday with a slate of foreign policy experts. Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and Secretary of State John Kerry were joined by some of Washington’s most established foreign policy hands, including Clinton National Security Adviser Sandy Berger and Zbigniew Brzezinski, who held the same position during the Carter administration. Former Obama national security adviser Tom Donilon was also at the dinner, as was former Undersecretary for Defense Policy

The beatings of three people in a Kroger parking lot Saturday night will not be investigated as a hate crime, according to police officials. Memphis Police Department director Toney Armstrong said he’s had lots of calls asking how the investigation would proceed but said there is “not sufficient enough evidence to investigate this as a hate crime.” “I know this has a lot of racial undertones,” Armstrong said during a news conference Monday at Memphis City Hall. “I’ve gotten a lot of calls and I know (Memphis Mayor A C Wharton) has as well. Joan Rivers "banned" First Lady Michelle Obama, pop star Adele and talk show host Chelsea Handler from attending her funeral just weeks before her sudden death. The comedienne sent Hollywood into mourning when she died Thursday, days after suffering a cardiac arrest during a routine throat procedure. Her funeral was held in her New York on Sunday and attracted stars including Hugh Jackman, Whoopi Goldberg, Kelly Osbourne and Sarah Jessica Parker, and it has now emerged Rivers had previously drawn up a wish-list of famous faces who should stay away. In one of her final interviews, conducted just weeks before her death, she

Half of all bird species in North America — including the bald eagle — are at risk of severe population decline by 2080 if the swift pace of global warming continues, the National Audubon Society concluded in a study released Monday. "The scale of the disruption we´re projecting is a real punch in the gut," said Gary Langham, chief Audubon scientist. (Snip) By 2080, the bald eagle, the national symbol of the United States, could see its habitat decrease by 75%, the report says. All of the habitat of the common loon, the state bird of Minnesota, could disappear in the lower 48

Washington — Panera Bread on Monday asked customers not to bring firearms into its restaurants, joining a growing list of retail and fast-food chains that have declared their establishments gun-free zones. The company said it wants to ensure that "customers and associates feel comfortable and welcome” in its restaurants. “We ask that guns not be brought into this environment unless carried by an authorized law enforcement officer," the eatery chain, which boosts 1,800 locations in the United States and Canada, said in a statement Monday. "Panera respects the rights of gun owners, but asks our customers to help preserve

SPOTTED: Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee sporting a pair of white flip-flops with her pearls while on the House floor on Monday. While the Texas Democrat was all business on top — wearing a red suit jacket with a black and white scarf and pearl necklace — she was ready to hit the beach on the bottom, with her toe-baring shoes. The House feed on C-SPAN did not capture the summer recess-worthy thongs. An ITK spy who observed the warm weather footwear noted that earlier on Monday, Jackson Lee delivered a one-minute speech behind a podium near the center of the

This morning, New York Times reporter Kim Severson spiced up her obituary for Chick-fil-A founder S. Truett Cathy by tagging him "a symbol of intolerance" who presided over a "restaurant chain [seen by some] as a symbol of hate." Here´s the relevant excerpt (emphasis mine): When he introduced himself, S. Truett Cathy often played down his job. “I cook chicken for a living,” he would say. And on the surface, that was true. Mr. Cathy, who died on Monday at 93, was by all appearances a humble Christian man from Georgia with little education who sold a simple sandwich: a

The Obama administration will make a decision on executive action to prevent corporations from leaving the country in the "very near future," Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said Monday morning. Speaking at an event on business taxes at the Urban Institute in Washington, Lew placed the responsibility on Congress to address so-called tax inversions, but said that the administration was prepared to step in if lawmakers don´t move quickly enough. Inversions are tax maneuvers in which corporations buy firms in low-tax countries in order to place their headquarters in that country. Such deals have grown in number in recent months, with

Megyn Kelly tonight brought viewers the first part of her contentious showdown with Professor Ward Churchill, best known for his controversial comments about the “little Eichmanns” who were in the World Trade Center when the planes hit on September 11th. Churchill came under intense scrutiny and was fired by the University of Colorado at Boulder. What concerned Kelly most in the first part of the interview was that “little Eichmanns” comment, the argument being that Eichmann played a role in horrible atrocities even though he didn’t directly carry out the Final Solution, which he views as similar to the financial

Free money for everyone! With weak job growth, rising poverty, and the rich continuing to devour nearly all economic growth, it´s an idea that is gaining more credence. Arguments for a universal basic income (UBI) — in which everyone without exception would receive an equal stipend — have flourished in policy-centric areas of the internet, including The Week. Advocates of UBI see it as a blunter, more effective means of reducing poverty and shrinking the inequality gap. But even if UBI proponents are right on the merits, Tyler Cowen argues that the politics of the issue are not favorable. Under
