CAIRO — Secretary of State John Kerry on Tuesday said that the United States was prepared to address the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip and the political demands of the Palestinians living there, but that a cease-fire first needed to be carried out. After a two-hour meeting with President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi of Egypt, Kerry said Egypt’s cease-fire proposal had provided the framework for discussions on how to arrange one. Kerry said his meetings here had been constructive. But there was no indication of an imminent breakthrough in cementing a cease-fire deal, and Kerry indicated that he expected his deliberations to continue for

Hamas is making demands on Israel, not us Mr. Kerry. Israel is giving their answer. You are not needed anywhere, Mr. Kerry.

77% of the Israeli´s want no cease fire. They want Hamas neutered. I´ll bet most Gazans do too. Kerry needs to be on his yacht.

DA drops charges in case

Two environmental activists, who had planned to use the necessity defense against charges of blocking a shipment of coal to a Massachusetts power plant, walked out of court this morning after prosecutors abruptly dropped all charges against them. Ken Ward and Jay O’Hara planned to use the unusual defense — arguing that they were acting to prevent harm from global warming to the planet — in a trial slated to start today that would have featured high-profile witnesses, including NASA climate scientist Jim Hansen and environmental activist and author Bill McKibben. At the courthouse, Bristol District Attorney C. Samuel Sutter said that

Washington - Secretary of State John Kerry is to set off Tuesday on a trip to Jordan and Saudi Arabia as part of efforts to build an international coalition to counter Islamic State militants. A State Department spokeswoman said that more than 40 countries have already indicated a willingness to help out in some way against the jihadist fighters, who have seized a swath of Syria and northern Iraq. "What the goal of the coalition is is to coordinate on the threat that ISIL poses," Jen Psaki said, adding that the allies would have differing roles and that not all would

WASHINGTON — U.S. workers face a dim future, with stagnant or falling pay and fewer openings for full-time jobs. That´s the picture that emerges from a survey of Harvard Business School alumni. More than 40 percent of the respondents foresee lower pay and benefits for workers. Roughly half favor outsourcing work over hiring staffers. A growing share prefer part-time employees. Nearly half would rather invest in new technology than hire or retain workers. At the same time, it´s becoming harder for the executives to find skilled workers, according to the survey results being released Monday. Jan Rivkin,

Business is not going well at the Internal Revenue Service. (snip) Because it’s assessed on sales, even unprofitable companies have to pay it. That’s a hefty blow to the 80 percent of the industry comprised of smaller start-up companies, which may be years away from posting profits. The tax is also sapping investment in the United States. In the AdvaMed survey, three-quarters of device firms said that they had cut back on capital investments, put off opening new facilities, deferred pay raises, or reduced investments in start-ups. Key Republicans will move Monday to try to prevent Libyans from being able to learn to fly airplanes at U.S. flight schools or train as nuclear scientists, introducing legislation to stop the Obama administration from loosening the rules. At a time when press accounts suggest Islamist militants may have stolen 11 jetliners from the airport in Tripoli last month, the House Republicans say it’s critical to keep a decades-old ban on Libyans being able to train at U.S. schools. The White House Office of Management and Budget approved the changes last month and they are awaiting a final signature by Homeland Security

Even just 20 years ago, violence against women in America was an epidemic few people wanted to talk about, let alone do something about. No one denied punching a wife in the face or pushing her down the stairs was reprehensible. But most people refused to intervene. They called domestic violence a "family affair." Critics of proposed laws protecting women from this violence claimed they would lead to the "disintegration" of the family. Today, it´s hard for many people to fathom a day in which Americans ignored this violence, or worse, condoned it. But it´s true. And it was against that

I also know that this climate change may drive many species to extinction. But as a scientifically literate person I have one question for those who accept the theory of evolution: “Why do you care about climate change and its effects on different

Unemployed people will be subject to attitude profiling to judge whether they are “determined”, “bewildered” or “despondent” about taking a job, under plans prepared by Esther McVey. Those that are less mentally prepared for life at work will be subject to more intensive coaching at the job centre, while those who are optimistic – such as graduates or those who have recently been made redundant – while be placed on less rigorous regimes.

Employment: You might want to recork that bottle of champagne that you planned to open after another big jobs report. Reality has intervened, with jobs rising a disappointing 142,000 in August. The weakness is no fluke. Many economists and politicians treated the six-month string of 200,000-plus job gains as a major achievement. But in fact it was merely a slight pickup in the pace of what has been an unusually slow recovery in the U.S. since the recession ended in June 2009. The August jobs report is an example. Unemployment edged down to 6.1% from 6.2% — "good" news until you realize

Immigrant-rights groups reacted furiously Saturday after the White House made clear President Obama will not take unilateral action on immigration before November’s elections, nodding at the political realities of the issue as he punted on the key policy questions. With a number of key Senate races in GOP-leaning states, Democrats had feared that action now would anger voters and cost them control of the upper chamber, and had privately begged the White House to hold off on any move to halt deportations. But immigration activists said it’s the latest in a series of moves by Mr. Obama to shove their
