End Partisan Primaries, Save America

WASHINGTON —Polarization and partisanship are a plague on American politics. Political scientists have found that the two parties have each grown more ideologically homogeneous since the 1970s. The Senate hasn’t been so polarized since Reconstruction; the House has not been so divided since around 1900. As measured by laws passed, the current Congress is on track to be among the least productive in our republic’s history. How did this happen? One of the main causes has not gotten enough attention: the party primary system. The reasons behind the shocking primary defeat last month of Representative Eric Cantor of Virginia, who

The reason for this hyper partisanship dear Senator is because the Left´s shenanigans to secure by alternate means what the people would not grant through the ballot box are being exposed with every passing day. Your Dear Reader has done exemplary national work in bringing this about through his brazen, lawless overreach.

Another mindless article trying to make a point based on an undefined scale of left v right. Centrists and moderates have been driven out not because of a change in their views but by a recalibration of the scale. They stayed put but now are defined as far right because the scale moved profoundly to the left.

The left define the scale based on themselves at any point in time not on fixed values and a long term historical perspective.

The reasons behind the shocking primary defeat last month of Representative Eric Cantor of Virginia, who was then leader of the Republican majority in the House, are still being debated, but there is no doubt that his defeat highlighted the pernicious effects of the predominant “winner-take-all” party primary system.

We have open primaries in Virginia (and no party registration). Cantor still lost, and in my view, his horrible campaign--not the system--was the reason.

This is a "twofer" - 1) the ability of a majority party to pick its opponent, and 2) the elimination of all possible third party candidates.

For the final statewide elections in California now, for example, only two candidates will appear. This eliminates a big part of third-party visibility.

Now that the democrat party has almost achieved nationally the kind of dominance of which they have dreamed (like that in Mexico, for example), this will kill any third-party challenge. I think this is the main motivation for this type of legislation.
