Pro-Russian Rebel Leader: We Want to

It may be some time before the bodies of the victims of Malaysia Airlines flight MH 17 are returned to their families. In an exclusive interview with ABC News today, the leader of the self-declared Donetsk People´s Republic said they would not be turned over until international inspectors come here to inspect them. "We can and we want to give bodies to the relatives but experts have to examine the bodies here. That is international practice," Alexander Borodai said. He feared that if the remains are turned over to the Ukrainian government they will be used as evidence to blame his fighters for

Brendan Tevlin was catching up with old friends and classmates after returning home to Livingston, New Jersey, following his first year at the University of Richmond. On the night of June 25, the 19-year-old spent several hours at a friend’s place in West Orange, a town bordering his own, then texted his mother that he was heading home. He never arrived. Somewhere around midnight, as Tevlin pulled up to an intersection bordering a large wooded area, at least three and possibly four men approached his car. One of the men opened fire, killing the college student in a murder that

A generous customer has paid $1,000 to pick up the tab for diners in dozens of vehicles at the drive-thru lanes of a West Texas fast-food restaurant. KTXS-TV reported the man was in a white truck at a Chick-fil-A in Abilene on Monday night when he gave the money to the restaurant. The man ´told employees he wanted to pay for everyone in the drive-thru line behind him´ for as long as the cash lasted,´ the affiliate station reported. KXTS-TV reported that the man told workers that his name is John, he just wanted ´to make everyone´s Monday better,´ the station said,

Ask a Liberal: Who Lost Iraq?

Who lost Iraq? In so many words, that is now the increasingly potent counter to years of liberal charges that America’s problems in the world can be traced to the Bush-Cheney foreign policy — specifically the invasion of 2003. The question has now taken root, with “Iraq” serving as shorthand for everything from Iraq itself to ISIS, the Syrian mess, Benghazi, and more. Graphically illustrated by the beheadings of two American journalists, a British aid worker, ISIS armies causing chaos in the once-stabilized region. Not to mention the murder of a 19-year old New Jersey college student Brendan Tevlin by

When are boots on the ground not boots on the ground? When they’re in Iraq. You’d be forgiven for being confused about the role of the U.S. military in combating the Islamic State, the band of militants who’ve taken over territory in Iraq and Syria. The Obama administration has announced a plan to roll back its advances with U.S. airstrikes combined with the ground forces of local allies, specifically Kurdish and Iraqi forces. There will be no U.S. boots on the ground, President Barack Obama said, as recently as today. “I want to be clear: The American forces that have been deployed to

´Security Moms´ Are Back—and
That´s Bad News for Democrats
Atlantic Wire, by Peter Beinart    Original Article

Suddenly, it feels like 2002. Democrats got creamed in midterm elections that year because the women voters they had relied on throughout the Clinton years deserted them. In 2000, women favored Democratic congressional candidates by nine points. In 2002, that advantage disappeared entirely. The biggest reason: 9/11. In polls that year, according to Gallup, women consistently expressed more fear of terrorism that men. And that fear pushed them toward the GOP, which they trusted far more to keep the nation safe. As then-Senator Joe Biden declared after his party’s midterm shellacking, “soccer moms are security moms now.” Unfortunately for President Obama,

Coalition? What coalition? Arab would-be allies in the fight against the Islamic State say (at best): Maybe. Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and other US-allied Arab regimes have sufficient reason to fight the jihadis that threaten their leaders’ hold on power. But they no longer trust America to lead them: We’ve let them down too many times these last five years. Qatar, on the other hand, has long supported extremists nearly as bad as ISIS (or ISIL as governments worldwide for some reason prefer). Yes, it’s recently started to at least pretend that it’s ready to expel the Muslim Brotherhood leaders and

The Democrats and the institutional left have a new political tool that allows them virtually to ignore moderates yet still win elections. This tool, the Catalist database, was employed in the 2012 election. That election defied conventional wisdom: Mitt Romney sought and won independent voters overwhelmingly, but still lost. If you wondered why the conventional wisdom about independents and moderates didn’t seem so wise in 2012, the answer is Catalist. Beyond winning elections, Catalist also allows the Democrats to turn the policy narrative upside down and suffer no political consequence for implementing radical policies which appeal to their base. In a sharp criticism of Mexico´s "failure" on immigration and crime policies, Texas Gov. Rick Perry on Wednesday invited President Enrique Pena Nieto to visit his state and observe law enforcement efforts on the U.S. side of the border. Pena Nieto recently criticized Perry´s highly-publicized deployment of National Guard troops to the border as "unpleasant" and "reprehensible." Perry, mulling running for president in 2016, fired back Wednesday with a letter to Pena Nieto saying Mexico isn´t doing enough to control immigration along its border with Central America or to control drug cartels. The Florida senator is warning about the threat of big powers like Russia and the need for a bigger U.S. military. If that sounds a lot like Romney to you, you´re paying attention. Senator Marco Rubio has a foreign policy vision that looks a lot like what Mitt Romney put forward in his 2012 presidential campaign. It wasn’t so long ago that Obama was ridiculing Romney for calling Russian America’s number one geopolitical foe and complaining that the Navy had fewer ships any time since World War I. “Well, Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets because the nature of our

How dirty is President Barack Obama prepared to get in the war to defeat ISIL? Beating back the brutal Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant may require cozying up to unsavory groups in Syria — including some currently affiliated with the Al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front — and may collide with existing law if the groups the U.S. wants to train or co-opt have murky human rights records, former officials and analysts say. Some lawmakers are questioning the wisdom of such alliances, though that doesn’t seem to be slowing down momentum on congressional approval of Obama’s plan to take on ISIL.

Arming ´moderates´: a cautionary tale

Not long ago, Washington considered arming and training rebels engaged in what would become a fierce civil war. Nations with an invested stake in the outcome discussed whether to support a perceived David against a corrupt Goliath in a strategically located region of the world. The consequences would have broad ramifications that would tip the scale in favor of one side. The issue wasn’t one of conviction. It was a matter of unanswered questions about an uncertain ally. The negotiations to which I refer could be mistaken as relating to arming the moderate Free Syrian Army against the oppressive regime of President Bashar

First Lady Michelle Obama has made healthy eating and exercise her signature issue. But, a recent study published by the Sage Journal found that her “elitist” advice actually “shames poor and middle class mothers.” The College Fix added that the study found that Michelle Obama’s healthy eating program is also sexist. It’s also sexist, the study’s authors suggest, noting that “intentionally or not, it places the burden of a healthy home-cooked meal on women.” Sage Journals published the study by North Carolina researchers Sarah Bowen, Sinikka Elliott and Joslyn Brenton. President Barack Obama unveiled his plan to tackle the Ebola crisis in West Africa on Tuesday, promising to do far more to tackle the deadly virus he said could result in "hundreds of thousands of people infected" without US intervention. "Hospitals, clinics, and the few treatment centers that do exist have been completely overwhelmed." The president was particularly dire

He is best known for his 1971 recording of Christian hymn Morning Has Broken, a top 10 hit in both the UK and US. Stevens had a number of other hits during

Democrats are now (very slightly) favored to hold the Senate majority on Nov. 4, according to Election Lab, the Post´s statistical model of the 2014 midterm elections. Election Lab puts Democrats´ chances of retaining their majority at 51 percent -- a huge change from even a few months ago when the model predicted that Republicans had a better than 80 percent chance of winning the six seats they need to take control. (Worth noting: When the model showed Republicans as overwhelming favorites, our model builders -- led by George Washington University´s John Sides -- warned that the model could and

The Obama administration is preparing to introduce major steps to phase out production of a popular chemical coolant used in refrigerators and air conditioners, citing growing evidence that the substance is contributing to the warming of the planet. The White House will announce on Tuesday a series of voluntary commitments by some of the country’s largest chemical firms and retailers to move rapidly away from R-134a and similar compounds used in nearly every office, home and automobile in the country, according to current and former U.S. officials familiar with the effort. Those pushing to have more states legalize marijuana consider this drug rather harmless, medically beneficial and liberal politicians consider this issue one that will attract voters. I don´t blame Rubio for not discussing whether he indulged n his youth or not. He is a public official with young children and carries a different responsibility than the rest of us.
