A chilling echo of Nazi death

The stench of death is thick in the air as onlookers peer inside a freight train containing the bodies of some 200 victims of the MH17 massacre. The scene, a grim echo of the mechanised slaughter of millions in the Second World War, has been created by Russian separatists who have collected piles of corpses from the plane crash and put them in refrigerated rail carriages. There was international outrage over the undignified scene last night – with swarms of flies buzzing around the train – although defiant local militia men insisted they were doing what they could for the dead. In May, Politico´s reporting inside Democratic circles led them to the strange conclusion that the one thing that could sink Hillary´s hopes of winning the White House was the press corps. A Clinton insider announced: “She wants to be president; she doesn’t want to run for president...The worst part of running for president for her, clearly, is dealing with the press.” In July, Politico interviewed former New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson, who made some sense of this bizarre-sounding notion. The media has for many years defended and protected and glamorized the Clintons. But Abramson said Hillary expects the press

Kerry Slams ‘Trigger Happy’ Critics:

Juggling foreign policy hotspots from Israel to Iran to Ukraine, Secretary of State John Kerry strongly defended the Obama administration’s foreign policy to Meet the Press host David Gregory, arguing that the administration had successfully used diplomacy to further peace whereas certain previous administration (a-HEM) were “trigger happy” to the point of starting wars. “What [Obama] faces is a problem with a bunch of critics who want to jump to conclusions without looking at the facts,” Kerry said. “The facts could not be more clear. The United States of America has never been more engaged, helping to lead in more places

Does a “quieter” North Korea represent progress in dealing with the rogue state’s threat to peace? On Sunday, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said the U.S. was “moving forward” with efforts to denuclearize North Korea and pointed to coordination with China, most recently on Mr. Kerry’s visit to Beijing. Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, Mr. Kerry also cited a “quieter” North Korea since his previous visit to Beijing in April 2013 as evidence of progress on restraining Pyongyang’s aggression. “I just came back from China, where we are engaged with the Chinese in dealing with North Korea. Pro-Russian rebels today said they have recovered the black boxes from MH17 and taken them to Donetsk where they will be handed over to international investigators. Rebel leader Aleksander Borodai told a press conference in Donetsk: ´Some items, presumably the black boxes, were found, and they have been delivered to Donetsk and they are under our control. ´There are no specialists among us who could pinpoint the look of the black boxes, but we brought to Donetsk some technical items which could be the black boxes of the airliner.´ However, Ukrainian security officials retorted that Russia has reinforced rebels with three multiple rocket

The two Iranian-designed Abadil-1 drones that Hamas flew from the Gaza Strip into Israel last week were little more than over-glorified toy planes. So why did the Israeli military shoot them down with $3 million Patriot missiles? After all, Israel has multiple Iron Dome missile-defense batteries in the south of the country. In all likelihood, the Patriot crew were the first to detect and track the invading drones. And not knowing exactly what they were facing, the Israeli Defense Forces took no chances. While the drones were destroyed, the episode shows the limits of conventional interceptors. If Hamas had sent a dozen

This generation has its KAL 007. The stunning downing of Malaysian flight 17 is strikingly similar to the shock of September 1, 1983, when the Russians downed a Korean passenger airliner, flight 007, which had left New York City for Seoul via Alaska. In both cases, the Russian government vehemently denied any involvement, disparaging anyone who dared to accuse it of prior knowledge. Both planes were Asian with similar numbers of dead. KAL had 269 passengers; the Malaysian flight nearly 300. They were mostly Asian passengers but also Americans—61 Americans in KAL 007 and a much smaller (still unconfirmed) number in

There is not very much good to say about the life and career of Vladimir Lenin, but give the pickled old monster this much: He cut through more than two centuries’ worth of bull and straight to the heart of all politics with his simple question: “Who? Whom?” Which is to say: Who acts? Who is acted upon? Even here in the land of the free, meditating upon that question can be an uncomfortable exercise. The foundation of classical liberalism, and of the American order, is not the rule of law, a written constitution, freedom of speech and worship, one-man/one-vote democracy,

One of the reasons people have grown so angry over Obama´s manufactured border crisis is that everything we are told is a lie. That´s consistent with the core Amnesty Caucus belief that the benighted knuckle-dragging xenophobic citizens of the United States have nothing to say about immigration policy - it´s a decision that will be made by the Ruling Class, in accordance with their political and economic interests. You taxpaying chumps will be told whatever the Ruling Class thinks you need to hear, whenever they think you need to hear it, with the truth either suppressed or kept on ice

It is at times like these, when he is pushed kicking and screaming into the crucible, that Obama’s callowness shows. For his supporters, that jejune, jocular air has been a plus for almost six years. For the rest of us, it has served as a liability and an irritation. Yesterday, it became a wholesale embarrassment. On the perpetual-campaign trail, the pattern is familiar. Trotting up to the podium, the president fist-bumps the audience’s stragglers and smiles a toothy and humble grin at those who catch his eye. While speaking, he responds to obsequy with obsequy — “I love you too!” he

When White House press secretary Josh Earnest said this week that President Barack Obama had "substantially improved the tranquillity of the global community," many observers reacted with disbelief. (snip) It is as though the more dangerous the world becomes the more Obama hides in a fantasy world of avoiding the responsibilities of the presidency. He uses the office to surround himself with court jesters who distract him in an enlightened and noble way from the growing failures of his policies and the rapidly expanding threats to the civilized world. Now that the U.S.-Russia relationship has broken down, Moscow could throw a wrench into the teetering nuclear negotiations with Iran. The escalating tensions between Washington and Moscow, brought to fever by the MH17 airliner disaster, are finally to the point where they threaten to spoil the number one item on President Obama’s foreign policy agenda: the nuclear talks with Iran. The man doing the threatening is Russian President Vladimir Putin.Earlier this week, Putin promised to retaliate against the United States for new sanctions targeting his friends and business associates, as well as large Russian defense, energy, and financial firms. (Video) Friday First Lady Michelle Obama hosted the first "Kids State Dinner” in the East Room of the White House, which treated the 54 children who won a nationwide healthy meal recipe contest sponsored by the food magazine Epicurious and the Education and Agriculture departments to a state dinner. The first lady told the kid chefs from each state, the District of Columbia, and three U.S. territories, "I need you guys to make your voices heard," because, she explained, "folks in Congress [are] trying to undo some of the progress that we’ve made to get healthier food into our schools."

At a political event in Wilmington, Delaware, on Thursday, President Obama devoted only 40 seconds to the shooting down of the Malaysian airline, his first statement to the world following the news. His emotionless reference to the attack as ‘a terrible tragedy’ seemed disconnected from the horrific moment, particularly as he immediately reverted to script to praise his administration and criticise Republicans. It was a far cry from President Reagan’s 1983 fierce denunciation of the Soviet shooting down of a Korean airliner as a ‘crime against humanity’. But it only confirmed the chaos into which US foreign policy has descended since the summer

Gay marriage laws and court rulings against sexual-orientation discrimination are all signs that it’s time for the federal government to change its blood-donor policy for gay and bisexual men, authors said in a commentary released Saturday. The lifetime ban for blood donation by men who have sex with men (MSM) “may be perpetuating outdated homophobic perceptions,” wrote Dr. Eli Y. Adashi of Brown University and scholars I. LOS ANGELES — Actor James Garner, whose whimsical style in the 1950s TV Western “Maverick” led to a stellar career in TV and films such as “The Rockford Files” and his Oscar-nominated “Murphy’s Romance,” has died, police said. He was 86. He was found dead of natural causes at his home in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles Saturday evening, Los Angeles police officer Alonzo Iniquez said early Sunday. Police responded to a call around 8 p.m. PDT and confirmed Garner’s identity from family members, Iniquez told The Associated Press. There was no immediate word on a more specific cause of death. Garner had suffered a stroke in May 2008, just weeks after his 80th birthday.
