West Frankfort, IL - Police investigating the theft of clothing and jewelry from a southern Illinois boutique say they arrested a woman after she posted Facebook photos of herself wearing one of the stolen items. WSIL-TV reports that police arrested 27-year-old Danielle Saxton, of West Frankfort, earlier this month on misdemeanor retail theft charges. She’s free on her own recognizance. Authorities say a distinctive leopard-print dress was among the items stolen July 11 from Mortie’s Boutique in West Frankfort. The store’s co-owner, Kert Williams, says he posted about the stolen items on Facebook and that people who saw

True story. When I was young and poor I lived with too many roommates, one whom I barely knew.

Out of nowhere I started ´losing´ jewelry. Good stuff my grandmother had given me.

One night all us ´roomies´ gathered to watch one of us being interviewed on a local cable access channel. Think late eighties.

Low and behold, there was the star wearing every piece of jewelry I´d lost!

Moral of the story. Some things don´t really change all that much.

And relevant to this story, when she returned the loot, she bought me a dress as compensation.

Ten to one she stole the dress.

Bruce Morton, a news correspondent for CBS and then CNN who covered Washington politics with a low-key but authoritative style for more than four decades and who co-hosted a droll morning show and reported on overseas massacres with equal skill, died Sept. 5 at his home in Washington. He was 83. The cause was complications from lymphoma, said his daughter, Sarah Morton, a former CBS News producer. Mr. Morton joined CBS in 1964 and became one of its most prominent and well-regarded correspondents. He shared six Emmys and a slew of other awards during his 29 years at the network.

Washington - A chartered aircraft carrying about 100 Americans from the U.S. airbase at Bagram, Afghanistan, has landed safely in Dubai after being diverted to Iran because of issues with its flight plan, the U.S. State Department said on Friday. The Fly Dubai plane took off earlier from Bandar Abbas, Iran, after being rerouted there. A U.S. official said the plane had failed to update its flight plan after leaving Bagram for Dubai several hours late. When Iranian civil aviation officials identified the plane, they could not find it in their system because it was supposed to have flown through hours earlier, the official said.

Ten days before Democratic Party Chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz accused Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s policies of hurting women and “grabbing us by the hair and pulling us back,” she went to bat for New Mexico House candidate and lawyer who has defended abusive husbands, court documents show. On August 24, she was in Albuquerque to promote Democrats including 2nd Congressional District candidate Roxanne Lara, an attorney whose practice includes family and divorce law. Her campaign bio said the Carlsbad attorney focuses on defending abused children. In four cases from 2001-2012 reviewed by

Geraldo Rivera remembered his "dear friend" Joan Rivers this morning, but also expressed his outrage over the way the comedy legend died. He pointed back to the death of Michael Jackson, who was given a powerful sedative by Dr. Conrad Murray. Rivera noted that Murray went to jail because he administered the drug Propofol in a setting where he had no capability to respond to an emergency. He said the New York clinic where Rivers went on Aug. 28 for a routine procedure also did not have the capacity to resuscitate her, and instead had to call 911. NORAD is in touch with Cuban authorities via the U.S. Coast Guard. The U.S. military jets will not enter Cuban airspace, a NORAD spokesman said.

Hillary Rodham Clinton said Friday she will likely decide whether to run for president in 2016 after the new year begins. “I am going to be making a decision … probably after the first of the year about whether I’m going to run again or not,” Mrs. Clinton said at an event in Mexico City, according to Reuters. The political world has been waiting for Mrs. Clinton, a former secretary of state, U.S. senator and First Lady, to say whether she plans to make a second run at the White House after losing the Democratic nomination to President Obama in 2008. Democrats have not been shy about making her the presumed frontrunner for 2016,

Baton Rouge, LA - A state district judge on Friday threw out a challenge to Senator Mary L. Landrieu’s bid for re-election in Louisiana. The judge, Wilson Fields, of Baton Rouge, ruled that a lawsuit questioning Ms. Landrieu’s residency was premature. The suit, filed by State Representative Paul Hollis, claimed that Ms. Landrieu, a Democrat, lived full-time in Washington and could not represent Louisiana because she was not a state resident. Newport, Wales - British Prime Minister David Cameron said on Friday that a second aircraft carrier, currently being built, would be brought into service, ending speculation about its future. "This will ensure that we will always have one carrier available, 100 percent of the time," Cameron said in a speech at a NATO summit in Wales. The fate of the carrier, HMS Prince of Wales, was not due to be decided until a defence spending review in the second half of next year after a national election, and defence experts had said it could be mothballed or sold. In July, Queen Elizabeth officially named the first carrier, which bears her name,

Will ISIS Help Pave Way for Iranian Nuke?

One of the ongoing conundrums of Middle East politics is the fact that the United States and Iran have wound up on the same side in the conflict against ISIS in Iraq and Syria. But in this case the enemy of our enemy isn’t necessarily our friend. Or at least it shouldn’t serve to help weaken American resolve to stop Iran’s drive for a nuclear weapon. (Snip) The Obama administration fled Iraq prematurely while staying out of the Syria conflict and thus set in motion the chain of events that led to the frightening rise of ISIS. So it is not in much of a position to pick and choose its allies in its halting efforts to stop the terrorist movement from

Britain could launch air strikes in Iraq and Syria within weeks after David Cameron set out a potential timetable for a military intervention and pledged to “use everything we have in our armoury” to wipe out Islamist terrorists. Downing Street was gauging whether Conservative MPs would support a military intervention against Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isil), with government whips asking MPs where they stood on the matter. Barack Obama stands apart from other modern American Presidents in many ways. (snip)the widespread view that he is the coolest President ever. This supernal coolness is not new. In his autobiography, Dreams From My Father, the President wrote that in his teenage years “I tried my best to be cool at all times” (p. 82). Last Wednesday, at a ceremony to appoint Texas lawyer Shaarik Zafar to be special representative to Muslim communities, Secretary of State John Kerry said it was the United States’ Biblical “responsibility” to “confront climate change,” including to protect “vulnerable Muslim majority counties.” Kerry said Scripture, in particular the Book of Genesis, makes clear it is our “duty” to protect the planet and we should look at Muslim countries “with a sense of stewardship of earth,” adding, “That responsibility comes from God.” And here you thought all along that “Uncle Joe” was the resident crazy in the Obama administration.

Maybe the news that a second American has been beheaded will force President Obama to recognize he has no more compelling priority today than stopping the Islamic State and its bloodletting. In its latest barbarity, ISIS aimed to project American weakness to the world. Just before he beheaded Steven Sotloff, the ISIS executioner explained the butchery this way: I’m back, Obama, and I’m back because of your arrogant foreign policy towards the Islamic State, because of your insistence on continuing your bombings.?.?. It was only a few weeks ago that Gannett did the same. USA Today is Gannett´s flagship publication and enjoys the highest circulation of any other American newspaper.
