The Element of Predictable Surprise
PJ Media, by Richard Fernandez

Original Article

“Ok, surprise me.” The enemy always does. For years Hamas has been working on a secret weapon: tunnels. (Snip) The current model of al-Qaeda is much more sophisticated than the original, with a minimum 7,000 jihadists with Western passports supported by intelligence, signals and other specialist cells. While they have waxed, the West has deliberately waned. The Obama administration has defined the threat away by tying the War on Terror to a campaign talking point. They must now maintain the fiction that “Osama bin Laden is dead and Detroit is alive” because that was an electoral promise which on no

It´s now been nearly thirteen years since the Big One. It´s is inevitable is that the ever evolving enemy intends to top what was done before. Meanwhile, Obama futzes around with Iran, which is hard at work building the first offensive use terrorist bomb. Not only are we not stopping them--we´re even trying to keep Israel from making a meaningful response. When the fissile hammer blow happens, wherever it finally happens, we won´t be able to say we tried our best to prevent it. How many dead next time? And will we reach the point of Wretchard´s Three Conjectures?

Peter Beinart’s widely quoted article in the Atlantic, Actually, Obama Does Have a Strategy in the Middle East, has the tagline “the president is neither a dove nor a hawk. He’s a fierce minimalist.” (Snip) He ends on a note of touching faith: “Barack Obama didn’t become president by tilting at windmills.” No, Obama became president because people like Beinart believed he would take them to a different place than where they now stand, each hour bringing a new humiliation and crisis. Roger Simon wrote on Twitter: “Not a single #liberal friend of mine wants to discuss politics now. They’re humiliated

The escape of the Filipino UN contingent from the clutches of the al-Nusra has a tragic-comic postscript. The Associated Press reports: ”The Philippine military said Monday that a UN peacekeeping commander in the Golan Heights should be investigated for allegedly asking Filipino troops to surrender to Syrian rebels who had attacked and surrounded their camp.” (Snip) The Fijians are now in a tight spot. I wrote yesterday, it is in Nusra’s interest to let the Fijians go. If they want to incentivize surrender they must make it safe. Lately the al-Qaeda affiliates have reversed the usual payoffs. It is surrender

Most Americans realize that Labor Day is about celebrating workers and their contribution to our free society, but that won’t stop union bosses from stealing the spotlight to push their own agenda. Despite this, there is still much to celebrate this Labor Day. Workers from across the country have made substantial gains for workplace freedom. In America’s newest Right to Work state, a growing number of workers from across Michigan are joining the fight to protect their right to work from union bosses. In Wisconsin, the state Supreme Court upheld in entirety Gov. Scott Walker’s public-sector unionism reforms, commonly known

“What’s in a name?” Shakespeare asked. Everything, it may turn out. The Washington Post describes the efforts of Samaritan Ministries to offer an alternative to Obamacare. (Snip) It is here where the God of Mathematics touches down upon the earth. One of the reasons faith-based health care Ministries might work is self-selection. Cynics may scoff at the morality clauses of Samaritan Ministries, but such morality clauses are probably written on the handout your doctor gave you under the heading “lifestyle changes” when your blood pressure turned up too high and the lab came back with alarming cholesterol and sugar counts.

LAS VEGAS - The mixed martial arts fighter known as War Machine has been extradited to Las Vegas to face charges he beat his ex-girlfriend and then fled to California. The man born Jonathan Paul Koppenhaver was booked into Clark County jail Saturday after he said in a Ventura County, California, courtroom last week that he wouldn´t contest his return to Nevada. Koppenhaver, 32, a former porn actor, is accused of beating adult film actress Christy Mack and her male friend at a Las Vegas home on Aug. 8 before fleeing to the Los Angeles suburb of Simi Valley, where he

A minor drama just concluded in the Middle East. A couple of days ago, Syrian rebels identified with the Nusra front, Syria’s al-Qaeda affiliate, went up to a Fijian United Nations peacekeeping outpost on the Golan Heights and demanded their surrender. (Snip) Nobody ever expects the Philippines to win battles in wartime. It is too weak and poor and disorganized for that. But the population demands of its army that they never be outfoxed. You might die, so long as you die in style. And if you make a fool of the enemy in the process then there is victory

Eden’s greatest attraction is that it was a time before guilt; before hatred, greed and lust took over the world. (Snip) And if our ancestors killed the Neanderthals, then war — and genocide — goes back at least 45,000 years. The interesting thing about this narrative is it suggests that many of the conquerors were conquered in turn. Or as Glenn Reynolds puts it, what if “‘First Peoples’ were actually just the last people to wipe out whoever was there before”? The real honor, apparently belongs not to the First, but to the Last peoples. Thank Gaia we’re the last!

2014 will be a year when the populations of the world began to wake up and smell the smoke. (Snip) But it may be no dream. David Cameron just warned Britain to brace for a possible ISIS attack on its shores. The jayvee ISIS team Obama scoffed at sure gets around. Cameron says ISIS ‘is more dangerous than al-Qaeda’. The doorman the president contemptuously glowered over at the summits is acting uppity too. That doorman, Vladimir Putin, has just used the “N” word in Ukraine. The “N” word being “Nuclear”.

Do not be fooled by Hillary Clinton’s attempt to rehabilitate her term as Secretary of State ahead of the 2016 presidential election. From 2009 to 2013, Clinton embodied U.S. foreign affairs even as President Obama’s avowed policy of self-effacement descended into listless, desultory abdication. Notwithstanding her recent critiques of Obama’s performance, Clinton’s failures as Secretary of State helped bring war to Europe, an arms race to Asia, and inferno to the Middle-East. The U.S. and its international standing are weaker for Clinton’s tenure as Secretary of State. Clinton’s mistakes began early, with her contribution to the misconceived and poorly executed

It will now take a frightening amount of either military or economic pressure to rein in the Bear. So what’s the president going to do? The only thing he can do: keep going down the road he started. President Obama needs to take action to stop Islamic State (Isis) militants from targeting cities in America and Western Europe, two senators have warned. Without offering specifics on any threats or suggestions on how to confront them, the leaders of the Senate and House of Representatives intelligence committees urged the White House to work to prevent the Islamic State extremists from launching attacks on US soil. The bipartisan pair shared a dire warning against Isis, which now has control of vast swathes of Syria and Iraq, has killed civilians from that region and beheaded American journalist James Foley. “This is

If you were in a room with Bill Clinton, he would discover the one issue out of 100 on which you agreed; he would probe you with questions, comments, suggestions; and he would tell you that you enabled him to understand it far better than he ever had before. Because I am a black conservative, someone wrote asking me this great question. “What is it that compels some black men and women to cling to, and follow people like Sharpton, Jackson, Wright, Obama, Spike Lee, Black Panthers, Holder, etc.?” I have pondered the same question. Some blacks are racist, pure and simple. I believe that a majority of black Americans simply have not been exposed to unfiltered conservatism – to blacks articulating how blessed they

Between 1970 and 1990, the population of Philadelphia shrank by a quarter, dropping from 1.95 to 1.59 million. Like many American cities, it seemed caught in a downward spiral. Since then – like many American cities – Philadelphia has stabilized. The population now appears to have bottomed out at the millennium, and has been regaining residents over the past decade. But as it rebounds, Philly is becoming a different kind of city. In the two most recent decades, which comprise the bounce of the city’s population curve, owner-occupied housing dropped even more steeply than in the ’70s and ’80s. Between 2000 and
