Kirkuk (Iraq)- Hundreds of Christian families fled their homes in Mosul Saturday before a jihadist ultimatum threatening their community´s centuries-old presence in the northern Iraqi city expired. An AFP correspondent in Mosul, the main Iraqi hub of the Islamic State (IS) group´s proclaimed "caliphate", said Christians squeezed into private cars and taxis to beat the noon deadline. "Some families have had all their money and jewellery taken from them at an insurgent checkpoint as they fled the city," said Abu Rayan, a Mosul Christian who had just driven out with his family. The jihadists who have run the city since

Deep in the wheat fields of southern Idaho, the storage facility of democracy lies in wait. Seven thousand, two hundred square feet, galvanized-steel walls, and inside: Thousands and thousands of tiny U.S. Constitutions. The calls to the warehouse of pocket-size Constitutions come from across the country: bookstores that want to sell them, teachers who can’t afford them, politicians who will pull them out at exactly the right moment to say, “This here is my copy of the United States Constitution, that I always carry, and it says ... ” That trick was a favorite of the late Democratic senator Robert

NEW YORK— Barcelona, Spain, captured the grand prize in a competition that spurs cities to develop novel approaches to improve urban life, Bloomberg Philanthropies announced Wednesday. Barcelona was awarded 5 million euro ($6.5 million) as top finisher. Four others were awarded 1 million euros ($1.3 million) each: the metropolitan area of Kirklees, England, and the cities of Stockholm; Warsaw, Poland; and Athens, Greece. Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the winners, selected from 21 finalists, in Paris. The prizes came from the billionaire businessman-turned-politician´s personal foundation for innovative ideas that could also potentially spread to other cities. "To

Contradicting comments from his top military advisers, President Obama told U.S. troops Wednesday that American forces “do not and will not have a combat mission” in the campaign to defeat Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq. “As your commander in chief, I will not commit you and the rest of our armed forces to fighting another ground war in Iraq,” Mr. Obama told troops at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, home of the U.S. Central Command. The president said troops that he is deploying to Iraq “will support Iraqi forces on the ground as they fight for their

Earlier this summer, I managed to perplex, perhaps even offend, a famous TV interviewer when I declared I wanted a federal government that followed the U.S. Constitution. Seemingly aghast, the interviewer went so far as to suggest my position was a “highly charged thing to say.” Imagine that. A journalist who, owing to the Constitution, has the right to report freely and to speak freely, being uncomfortable to hear a fellow American swear allegiance to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers’ vision of a limited central government. I fear we as a nation have drifted too far away from an

Although state polling shows the GOP slipping some in the Republican quest to win the U.S. Senate, a New York Times/CBS News poll reveals that President Obama is polling worse than George W. Bush on issues important to voters, while the GOP is gaining strength. On the question of overall job approval, Obama has tied his all time low of just 40%, with 50% disapproving. On the issue of foreign policy, Obama has hit an all-time low of 34%, with 58% disapproving. At this same time in his presidency, President Bush sat at a little better 37% approve, 56% disapprove.

WASHINGTON, D.C.- After registering slightly higher trust last year, Americans´ confidence in the media´s ability to report "the news fully, accurately, and fairly" has returned to its previous all-time low of 40%. Americans´ trust in mass media has generally been edging downward from higher levels in the late 1990s and the early 2000s. Americans´ Trust in the Mass Media - Chart/Graph -Prior to 2004, Americans placed more trust in mass media than they do now, with slim majorities saying they had a "great deal" or "fair amount" of trust. The New York Times has lost faith in President Barack Obama‘s pledge to avoid committing ground troop to the ISIS fight in Syria and Iraq. When Obama gave a speech last week that laid out his plan to combat ISIS, an Islamic terrorist network, he said the U.S. would engage in military airstrikes but would not be utilizing its own ground troops. That policy seemed to reverse on Tuesday, however, when Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Martin Dempsey said there could be scenarios where ground troops would be necessary. The White House then tried turning that back around, saying

President Barack Obama unveiled his plan to tackle the Ebola crisis in West Africa on Tuesday, promising to do far more to tackle the deadly virus he said could result in "hundreds of thousands of people infected" without US intervention. First Lady Michelle Obama has made healthy eating and exercise her signature issue. But, a recent study published by the Sage Journal found that her “elitist” advice actually “shames poor and middle class mothers.” The College Fix added that the study found that Michelle Obama’s healthy eating program is also sexist. It’s also sexist, the study’s authors suggest, noting that “intentionally or not, it places the burden of a healthy home-cooked meal on women.” Sage Journals published the study by North Carolina researchers Sarah Bowen, Sinikka Elliott and Joslyn Brenton.
