What The Downed Flight
MH17 Means For Russia

The Federalist, by Tom Nichols

Original Article

Here’s what the shootdown of Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 means: Russia, with Vladimir Putin at the wheel, just drove off the edge of a cliff. Now, by this I don’t mean that the United States and the European Union are going to charge in with a new round of sanctions, provide lethal aid to Ukraine, patrol the skies of Ukraine, or anything of that nature. The West didn’t react in time, or with enough resolve, to the initial invasion and partition of Ukraine last spring, and there’s no reason to think our reaction will be any more effective or resolute this

Just as the RINOs are a permanent insurance policy for Democrat misdeeds in this country. The feckless regime we elected twice will cover Putin. I wouldn´t worry if I were him.

Not to worry, the Obama Administration is getting ready to draw some red lines and show flexibility that Obama spoke about.

Thugs really don´t concern themselves with the names we call them. The fact that we resort to impotent verbal tongue lashings in fact emboldens them. Putin´s latest outrage will be overwritten by even greater outrages ahead. Count on it.

The black boxes are the key. Unless Putin hands them over immediately, Russia will have reached a historic "point of no return". Doubling down at this point reveals intent.

The "reset", like other promises from the Emperor, has been fulfilled - but not for the purpose we were led to believe. It is the Cold War that has been reset. We may well be on the precipice of a "hot" war.

The Democrats have once again done what they do. Resources intended to defend the country have been diverted to domestic "social" purposes. Our military has been hollowed out, our allies betrayed, and our enemies emboldened. That is what Democrats do. They have not been called the "war party" for nothing.

If only we had an effective opposition to stop the madness. In the GOP, we don´t.

The black boxes don´t really matter as this was not an aircraft failure. It was a shoot down. Other than a route diversion into the wrong place/time the aircraft and crew were not a factor. All the boxes will show is how fast an aircraft disintegrates when hit by a missile at 34,000 feet.

That is not the point, #6. More important than position, voice communications, and condition of the aircraft transponders is the stewardship of the investigation. Russia needs to relinquish control, and let international agencies solve this. We know they were at least accessories before the fact; this would make them accessories after the fact.

Like many things lately, the cover-up can be worse than the incident itself - even in this horrific case. Doubling down and leading to a war where millions might perish dwarfs even the 298 who died on the flight, and any who might have died on the ground. It´s that serious.

"...Russia, with Vladimir Putin at the wheel, just drove off the edge of a cliff."

Not

I have a sinking feeling that a falling Putin, in midair, will morph into a hapless, handcuffed and blindfolded Uncle Sam as the black hats maneuver for advantage and Obama, as ever, applies the rules of appeasement to turn this into yet another humiliation for the west.

Obama will call for "a process" in the form of investigation[s] until, as one person said on FOX, the limb becomes gangrenous and rots off the body.

And yes, he will be helped by the gutless, feckless Euroweenies who are sisters in appeasement.

Such are the fruits of progressivism.

Hillary Clinton’s campaign-in-waiting has a priceless asset, a super weapon strong enough to strike fear in her most determined rival. It also has a dangerous liability, a burden able to drag her into dead ends and drive her to distraction. It’s Clinton’s peculiar fate that both just happen to be her husband. As Clinton ponders her second run for the White House, many variables are in play, from her age to her health to her economic platform to her status as a soon-to-be grandmother. But an unspoken issue that floats above all others—and that keeps some very smart Democrats awake nights—is

Senate nominee Alison Lundergan Grimes has raised a few eyebrows with a recent TV spot. The ad, called "Proud Man," highlights the Kentucky Democrat´s grandparents’ struggles to pay medical bills after her grandfather’s stroke, and criticizes Grimes´ opponent, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, for votes he’s taken on Medicare. “His last ten years, he couldn’t speak or work,” Grimes says of her grandfather in the spot, “and they could barely afford the medicines.” “Our life became something else,” Grimes’ grandmother says. “No vacations, no retirement.”

When the first flights of Tomahawk cruise missiles and fighter bombers were launched against headquarters buildings of the self-styled Islamic State in Syria and the Khorasan terrorist group, five of America´s Arab friends in the Middle East went along for the ride, according to the list President Obama read to the American people. Notably absent was Turkey, the sole United States treaty ally in the region or, indeed, any other member of the NATO alliance — not France, Germany or Britain. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson and others said they faced deportation. Conservatives are warning President Obama against using a lame-duck session of Congress to push through Attorney General Eric Holder´s replacement, even as the White House signals its intention to fill the post quickly. Holder’s announcement that he will resign as the nation’s top law enforcement officer reverberated Thursday around Washington, where speculation has already begun to mount about who might fill the Cabinet position. Republican lawmakers quickly vowed that whomever Obama taps would be subject to intense scrutiny following an era when the GOP was often at odds with the Justice Department. Of the countless lessons we’ve learned from liberals over the past few years, none is more critical than this: If Democrats find an issue important enough, and if doing something feels like the “right thing,” Barack Obama has the power to act without any regard for separation of powers. So what makes anyone believe that war would be any different? This week the president okayed airstrikes against ISIS targets—allying us with Assad Bashar, possibly Iran and definitely Qatar—using an unrelated 13-year old AUMF as his legal mandate. Seems like a big deal. It might even be a good idea. Yet, even
