Malaysia Airlines disaster: The West
must take a firm line with Russia

Telegraph [UK], by Editorial

It might have seemed as if the rebellion by Russian separatists in Ukraine, fostered by Vladimir Putin, was a faraway war in a distant land. But when the passengers and crew of Flight MH17 flew into that war zone and became its latest victims, the global implications of the Ukrainian crisis became apparent. It is no longer “just” Russians and Ukrainians dying: as so often happens, an unstable region is putting the wider world at risk. Over the past few years, the West’s foreign policy has been marked by a sense of over-caution, even retreat. This is understandable. The death

Interesting. So had the western European powers been more critical of the German Third Reich, and had imposed greater economic sanctions upon it--say denying banking privileges to Hitler´s friends--World War II in Europe could have been prevented. By extension, war with Japan might have likewise been prevented by universal condemnation of Japanese aggression in China, and the movement of the U.S. fleet to forward Pacific bases, say Pearl Harbor, for example, thereby signifying a threat to Japan´s access to oil and other natural resources unless it played nicely. Anyone for a game of bridge? I have one for sale.

Fightback against ISIS begins: Obama arms

The Obama administration has begun directly providing weapons to Kurdish forces who have started to make gains against Islamic militants in northern Iraq, senior U.S. officials said today. [Snip] U.S. air strikes have been key to redressing the balance over weekend, allowing Kurdish forces to retake two towns yesterday in one of their first victories since the uprising began in June. But the refugee crisis continues to escalate with thousands of Yazidis pouring across the border from Iraq into Syria after a week-long journey through blazing hot mountains. The U.S. officials wouldn´t say which U.S. agency is providing the arms or what

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have played a significant role in returning Hamas to the negotiating table over a permanent ceasefire, a security official revealed Sunday on condition of anonymity, after pledging to contribute money to rebuild Gaza. [Snip] The Saudi funding is conditional on the promise that the funds will be used for legitimate civilian projects only--specifically barring the rebuilding of terror tunnels. It is unclear what system of checks and balances exist to ensure that promise is kept will be in place, however, and the fact remains that Hamas routinely sets up headquarters in civilian buildings,

Iraqi court ´backs PM Nouri

Iraqi state TV says a top court has ruled that PM Nouri Maliki´s bloc is the largest in parliament, in a boost to his bid to stay on for a third term. The decision would mean the president, who Mr Maliki criticised for not intervening when parliament failed to appoint him, should ask him to remain. But Arab media cast doubt on the report, carrying an apparent statement by the court denying any decision. [Snip] Critics say Mr Maliki, a Shia, has precipitated the current crisis through sectarian policies. Sunnis, Kurds and even fellow Shia have urged him to go.

Like all the rest of us I have been looking with sickened disbelief at the changes in the map of northern Iraq, and the Ebola-like spread of the fanatics. It seems incredible that the disintegration should happen so fast. It was only in May this year that we welcomed a dynamic and forward-looking young politician to City Hall in London. His name is Nechirvan Barzani, and he is the prime minister of the fledgling state of Kurdistan. He brought his finance guy, his transport minister, his tourism minister--the whole lot. Medical experts have predicted that the illegal immigrant camps of Calais will soon be hit by Ebola, according to the Sunday Express. The camps, which are filled with African immigrants desperate to make it over the English Channel, are already rife with diseases like scabies. Now they could become the frontline in Britain’s fight against Ebola as immigrants from countries like Liberia and Sierra Leone arrive daily. The camps are particularly dangerous because people live in such close proximity, ideal for the spread of Ebola. Around 1,200 men, women and children live in the largest camp: ´Jungle 2´.

People smashed car windows and carried away armloads of looted goods from stores Sunday night after thousands of people packed a suburban St. Louis area at a vigil for an unarmed black man who was shot and killed by a police officer. The candlelight gathering was for 18-year-old Michael Brown, who police said was shot multiple times Saturday after a scuffle involving the officer, Brown and another person in Ferguson, a predominantly black suburb of the city. Afterward, some people looted a convenience store. Several other stores along a main road near the shooting scene were broken into and looted, including a

As Operation Protective Edge holds in a temporary ceasefire, evidence has come out revealing the extent of the extremist Sunni group Islamic State´s (IS, formerly ISIS) involvement in the terror war against Israel from the Hamas stronghold of Gaza. Terror organizations associated with IS and Al Qaeda have been proven to be joining the fight against Israel in Gaza, firing rockets on Israeli civilian population centers and attacking IDF troops. On Sunday the Abdullah Azzam Brigades declared it had fired a Grad missile towards the Israeli town of Mivtahim located near southern Gaza. The announcement comes after similar ones last

A new 72-hour ceasefire in Gaza has been agreed between Israel and the Palestinians following mediation by Egypt, a Palestinian official said Sunday. Israel confirmed Sunday evening that the 72-hour truce will go into effect at midnight. According to Channel 2, the Israeli delegation will head to Cairo for talks Monday morning, if the fire from Gaza does indeed cease and the night is a quiet one. Hamas played a double game Sunday, with its negotiators reportedly agreeing to a ceasefire in Cairo, and its terrorists in Gaza launching missiles at Israel. A beautiful mosaic of ancient religions, cultures and languages in the Middle East is being systematically destroyed. Until now, the world has watched mutely. When Muslims were threatened with genocide in Bosnia, the international community acted in concert to prevent the campaign against them developing into a full-scale pogrom. I was also present when millions of Afghan refugees poured into Pakistan after the Soviet invasion of that country. The decision by Sen. John Walsh (D-Mont.) not to seek election in November in the wake of a plagiarism scandal is the latest piece of good news for Republicans as they strive to take control of the Senate in less than three months. Walsh’s departure from the race came in the same week that two Republican senators — Pat Roberts in Kansas and Lamar Alexander in Tennessee — defeated tea party challengers in primary fights, ensuring that every GOP senator seeking reelection would be the party’s nominee. Barack Obama deliberately set out to lose the war in Iraq, and he did. He defied the advice of his joint chiefs of staff to secure America’s formidable military presence and keep 20,000 troops in country, and left Iraq to its own devices and the tender mercies of Iran. In doing so, he betrayed every American and Iraqi who gave his life to create a free Iraq and keep it out of the clutches of the terrorists. Iraq is now a war zone dominated by the terrorist forces of the Islamic State, whose rise Obama’s policies fostered. Both his secretaries

A terrifying jihadist group is conquering and butchering its way across big swaths of Iraq and Syria. Planes are falling out of the sky on what seems like a weekly basis. Civilians are being killed in massive numbers in the Israel-Gaza conflict. Others are falling prey to Ebola in West Africa. The world, in short, is falling apart. When he was running for re-election in 2012, President Barack Obama repeatedly took credit for ending the war in Iraq and bringing all U.S. troops home from that country. At the White House on Saturday, however, when talking about his decision to use military force against the al-Qaida-related ISIS terrorist group in Iraq, Obama said removing all U.S. troops from Iraq was not “my decision.” “You know I say what I mean and I mean what I say,” Obama said in Hollywood, Florida on Nov. 4, 2012. “I said I´d end the war in Iraq. A 40-year political career came to a close after Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie lost his bid for a second term in a stunning primary-election defeat by a fellow Democrat and state senator who defied party leadership to challenge the incumbent. A second intraparty fight for U.S. Senate was too close to call. State Sen. David Ige, once seen as an underdog, cruised to a decisive 35 percentage point win in Saturday´s primary after being dramatically outspent by Abercrombie, who also had high-profile endorsements including President Barack Obama. Ige said his win "proves that people power can be money power, especially in Hawaii."
