Malaysia Airlines plane crash: How
do we deal with a pathological
liar like Vladimir Putin?

We should not be surprised that Moscow is categorically rejecting the accusation that it was responsible for the Malaysian airline disaster. For the default position of Russian President Vladimir Putin when confronted with some unpalatable truth is to tell a bare-faced lie. Remember how, when Russian Spetsnaz special forces were rampaging through Crimea earlier this year, Mr Putin told a Russian press conference that there were no Russian forces in Ukraine? Well, now we are dealing with a similar situation following the airline disaster, with the Russian leader trying to shift the blame for the crash on to anyone but

Florida authorities have confirmed the first two cases of a painful mosquito-borne disease contracted in the United States. State health officials confirmed a Miami-Dade County female and a male in Palm Beach County have become the first two people to contract chikungya in the United States. Dozens of infections have previously been reported in Florida alone, according to the Tampa Bay Times, but these are the first two to have been contracted in the States. [Snip] Symptoms include fever, severe joint pain, swelling, rashes, and a feeling similar to arthritis for years, according to the Herald.

The three suspects in a bank robbery gone wrong who used a married mother as a human shield during a high-speed chase and gun battle with police are believed to be part of a notorious street gang, authorities said. Misty Holt-Singh was one of three women--another customer and a bank employee--taken hostage and used as human shields during shootout that saw 20 officers fire shots and three of the getaway SUV´s six occupants including her die. A 19-year-old gang-banger was taken alive by police and two of the hostages pushed from the moving vehicle after being shot are miraculously expected

Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk today called on world powers to support his government in bringing to justice ´those b****** who committed this international crime´ after a passenger plane was shot down over his country. Rescue workers, police and even coal miners are combing the site where a Malaysian Airlines jet crashed after being shot from the sky by a surface-to-air missile, scattering wreckage and bodies across the Ukrainian countryside. Ukraine accused pro-Russian separatists of shooting down the plane which was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur with 298 people on board, while the Russian media today blamed everyone but pro-Moscow rebels

Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman on Thursday denied earlier reports that Israel and Hamas had reached an agreement on a cease-fire that would put an end to the fighting as of Friday morning. Liberman´s denial came minutes after Reuters quoted an Israeli official as saying that Israeli senior representatives at talks in Cairo had accepted an Egyptian proposal for a comprehensive Gaza cease-fire starting on Friday, but Israel´s leaders still had to approve the deal. The official, who earlier said that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu´s decision-making security cabinet had agreed to the truce, later told Reuters the forum had not yet

Microsoft set to axe 18,000 jobs

Microsoft is to cut up to 18,000 jobs marking the deepest cuts in the technology firm´s 39-year history. The bulk of the cuts, around 12,500, will be in its phone unit Nokia, which Microsoft bought in April, the firm said. Microsoft pledged to cut $600m (£350.8m) per year in costs within 18 months of closing the acquisition. The cuts are much more severe than the 6,000 initially expected. Chief executive officer Satya Nadella, who took the helm in February, wants the firm to shift its focus away from software to online services, apps and devices.

After President Barack Obama breathlessly addressed four different foreign-policy issues during a 10-minute statement, he summed up the state of a crisis-filled world in one sentence. "We live in a complex world and at a challenging time," Obama said. Obama touched on the laundry list of global flashpoints situations during a statement from the White House on Wednesday — the disputed elections in Afghanistan, the negotiations on Iran´s nuclear program, the Israeli-Palestinian crisis, and, finally, the conflict in Ukraine. The most significant recent development in these situations was the announcement of new sanctions on Russia shortly before the president spoke. Obama described those

Four-star Gen. James Amos, commandant of the Marine Corps, used a speaking engagement at the Brookings Institute on Tuesday to deliver a stinging rebuke of the Obama administration’s handling of Iraq. “I have a hard time believing that had we been there, and worked with the government, and worked with parliament, and worked with the minister of defense, the minister of interior, I don’t think we’d be in the same shape we’re in today,” Gen. Amos said, the Fiscal Times reported Wednesday. It is rare for an active-duty serviceman to give such blunt public criticism of a sitting president. While

Along with citing a list of moderate GOP governors with last names like Bush and Christie as potential 2016 GOP presidential candidates, "Arizona Sen. John McCain said Thursday that he believes Republicans can defeat former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2016, but only if they pass immigration reform." Calling Hillary Clinton the "odds-on favorite right now“ to win the White House in 2016, McCain added, "I expect it to be very competitive, except if we don’t enact some kind of comprehensive immigration reform, I do not see a way for us to really win a general election.”

Rep. Tom Rice (R., S.C.) and constitutional law expert David Rivkin on Wednesday predicted victory in the lawsuit the House is launching against President Barack Obama. The House Rules Committee held a hearing on the proposed lawsuit, which is intended to prove the unconstitutionality of Obama’s unilateral delay of the employer mandate portion of the Affordable Care Act. Witnesses at the hearing argued about whether the House has standing to sue the president to enforce the law. “I’m very optimistic that this lawsuit will succeed,” Rivkin said in an interview. “I certainly expect there to be a propaganda offensive to

Former Secretary of State and almost-certain 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton not only demanded $275,000 to speak at the University of Buffalo, her nine-page contract is filled with the kinds of demands that Pop Divas like Madonna are regularly mocked for. According to documents obtained by the Washington Post, on top of that mammoth speaking fee, Clinton´s contract demands……the university provide "a presidential glass panel teleprompter and a qualified operator," that Clinton´s office have "final approval" of her introducer and the moderator of any question-and-answer session, as well as "the sets, backdrops, banners, scenery, logos, settings, etc," and that the

The ongoing investigation of former CIA director David Petraeus is “perplexing and suspicious,” according to a leading Republican on the House Government Oversight Committee. After sending a letter and questioning Attorney General Eric Holder twice and former FBI Director Robert Mueller once about the probe, Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, told Holder in a new letter this week, "I find the timeline...to be increasingly perplexing and suspicious. I urge the Department to move forward with this investigation in an expeditious and prudent manner." Chaffetz also told Gretchen Carlson on Fox News’ “The Real Story” Wednesday that the open investigation may have a chilling
