Why Airlines Didn´t Avoid
Risky Ukraine Airspace

Associated Press, by David Koenig & Scott Mayerowitz

The possibility that the civilian jetliner downed over war-torn eastern Ukraine with nearly 300 people onboard was hit by a missile could have profound consequences for the world´s airlines. Airlines might have to be more vigilant about avoiding trouble spots, making flights longer and causing them to burn more costly fuel. They may even be forced to reconsider many international routes. In the hours after Thursday´s disaster involving a Malaysia Airlines jet, carriers around the globe began rerouting flights to avoid Ukraine. Some had been circumventing the country for weeks. Experts questioned the airline´s decision to fly near the fighting, even as

It was full of good liberals going to an AIDS conference in Sydney. Their good intentions make them immune from harm.

Let´s not be ludicrous. NO doctors, scientists, researchers who might be at the conference are conservative? Even conservatives die of AIDS you know. Everything in the world is not liberal vs conservative.

Harold Hamm is an unlikely billionaire: the 13th child of Oklahoma sharecroppers whose identity as a self-made man could just be his downfall in his impending divorce battle. Hamm, the founder and CEO of Continental Resources, is the world´s 34th-richest person in the world, with a personal fortune of an estimated $20.3 billion. The oilman is in the second week of a divorce hearing from his wife of 25 years, Sue Ann, and experts say the only way he can avoid paying half of his assets - and possibly losing a controlling share of his company - is to argue

Old Ironsides sailed through Boston Harbor Friday for the last time until 2018, as the 216-year-old warship prepares to undergo a three-year restoration beginning early next year. The USS Constitution has sailed unassisted by a tug boat only twice since 1881, in 1997 and 2012. This summer it sailed with the help of a tug, but still moved by its own power. Friday was the final unassisted sail until the ship has completed its restoration. Aside from making the usual repairs for wear and tear, the restoration aims to return Old Ironsides to an image of its 1812 self. “She kind of ballooned

Despite lingering questions over his eating habits, the Marine Corps promoted its bulldog mascot, Chesty XIV, to corporal. At a ceremony Friday morning at the Marine Barracks Washington, Gen. James Amos, the commandant of the Marine Corps, affixed the insignia of a corporal to Chesty. The Marine Corps Friday Night parade season ends tonight, the last ceremonial show that will be overseen by Gen. Amos, who is scheduled to relinquish command in October. And in remarks bidding adieu to the Marines at the Washington Barracks, Gen. Amos said he wanted to promote Chesty XIV before he departed.

Russia and China are betting that they can score points against President Obama while he´s tied up dealing with the growing threat from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. In the past week, Russian troops have crossed into Ukraine to aid separatists fighting the government in Kiev, and Chinese officials increased their rhetorical assault on U.S. surveillance flights over the South China Sea — in spite of talks designed to prevent incidents such as the Aug. 19 near-collision between a U.S. Navy spy plane and a Chinese fighter jet sent to intercept it. Only when it comes to college football do we believe that the deaths of a girlfriend and grandmother will spur a 21-year-old to lead his team to victory, and accept that a 22-year-old sprained his ankles from leaping off a three-story balcony to rescue a drowning nephew. The NFL may be played on Sundays, but college football is religion, with each team steeped in its own obscure mores, traditions, and believers. College football is a confounding sport with an arcane history at the intersection of higher education, the twilight of adolescence, and semi-professional football, all institutions of questionable integrity. San Francisco If you want to film a zombie movie on the cheap, San Francisco offers a ready-made location overflowing with extras. In this walkable Western metropolis, one walks a gauntlet of down-and-outers betraying that unmistakable drug gait and displaying lights out upstairs through their windows’ 100-watt stares. Instead of groaning for “more brains,” San Francisco’s zombies mumble “spare change.” In a Market Street smoke shop, a short man convinced of the justice of his proposed barter

We’ve all heard this refrain ad nauseam since 9/11: “Islamists are at war with the West. They hate us for who we are.” The fact is, though, that they don’t hate us for who we are. They hate us for who we’re not: we’re not Muslim, and that’s a characteristic we share with billions of people outside the West. If we could only get over our Western self-absorption, we could do a much better job of uniting with our natural allies to combat the global Islamist threat. When I say that “we” in the West are “not Muslim,” I am of

President Obama needs to focus on how

PRESIDENT OBAMA’S acknowledgment that “we don’t have a strategy yet” in Syria understandably attracted the most attention after his perplexing meeting with reporters Thursday. But his restatement of the obvious was not the most dismaying aspect of his remarks. The president’s goal, to the extent he had one, seemed to be to tamp down all the assessments of gathering dangers that his own team had been issuing over the previous days. This argument with his own administration is alarming on three levels. The first has to do with simple competence. One can only imagine the whiplash that foreign leaders must be suffering.

Today, however, the rats threatening to descend on America’s Sin City are transnational terrorists. And when they talk about “killing” the audience, they mean it literally. After a summer in which Islamic State militants have rampaged through Iraq and Syria, declared an Islamic caliphate, recruited extremists from abroad and claimed credit for decapitating American journalist James Foley, President Obama vowed earlier this week that “justice will be done” to the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, known as ISIL or simply the Islamic State—a group that Secretary Chuck Hagel and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Martin Dempsey have called an “imminent threat” to the United States with an “apocalyptic, end-of-days strategic vision.” But the president has long resisted getting “dragged back into another ground war in

President Barack Obama said during a Thursday press conference that his administration doesn´t have a plan worked out yet for defeating the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) in Syria. [Snip] ´What I´ve seen in some of the news reports suggests that folks are getting a little further ahead of where we´re at than we currently are,´ Obama cautioned. He mentioned four times his intention to seek advice from Capitol Hill before deploying more military assets in the Middle East, likely in response to concerns from members of the House and Senate that he was unconstitutionally freezing them out.

"I don´t want to put the cart before the horse, we don´t have a strategy yet," he said. The Daily Beast reported that the president asked for a war plan for ISIS in Syria by Friday. The Secret Service is investigating a possible threat made against President Obama. Authorities tell NBC News that there was a “potentially suspicious person and vehicle” near where Obama made fundraising stops tonight. Connecticut police have been informed of the report by the Secret Service, as well as being advised to be on lookout for this suspicious person. State law enforcement is currently looking for the car this person was driving, which they believe to be a blue Jetta with Connecticut plates. Obama attended one fundraiser in Connecticut tonight before heading to another one in Rhode Island

Megyn Kelly was incredibly bewildered Thursday night at President Obama‘s comment about having no concrete Syria strategy yet. Ed Henry was very blunt in telling Kelly that this is an unqualified “disaster” for the White House. Henry admitted he was “stunned” that none of his colleagues in the briefing room followed up on that remark of the president’s, especially considering how quickly after the presser the White House jumped right into “damage control mode.” And whereas last night Henry blew Kelly’s mind by telling her Obama would be attending one fundraiser on Friday, he told her tonight that actually, it’s going to

During the Great Depression, the Communist scribes at the Daily Worker were forever assuring the more skeptical among their colleagues that the heroic spark was near. Having read about a “small riot somewhere in rural Minnesota,” Whittaker Chambers recorded in Witness, Robert Minor started shouting about “the beginning of the American revolution.” If the paper wished to capitalize upon dissatisfaction and spin it into insurrection and change, Minor proposed, it would need the staff to keep an eye out for the tell-tale sign and, then, to “play it up big.” Over the past month, the events in Ferguson, Mo., have played

At least four hostages held in Syria by the Islamic State, including an American journalist who was recently executed by the group, were waterboarded in the early part of their captivity, according to people familiar with the treatment of the kidnapped Westerners. James Foley was among the four who were waterboarded several times by Islamic State militants who appeared to model the technique on the CIA’s use of waterboarding to interrogate suspected terrorists after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. The victims of waterboarding are often strapped down on gurneys or benches while cold water is poured over a cloth covering

intelligence community has observed a “significant increase” in chatter among terrorist organizations as the 13th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks nears. “We’ve noticed a significant increase in chatter among Islamic terrorist organizations overseas both on the Internet and phone lines,” a U.S. government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Blaze. While the intelligence community can not pinpoint whether or not an attack is planned, the official said that agencies “did see this kind of increase in chatter before the September 11 attacks.”

Watching the events unfold in Ferguson, Missouri, I can’t help thinking about the Holocaust and post-war Germany. As the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, I’ve spent years watching Germany wrestle with its dark past. It’s just one of many places that have made efforts to understand and compensate for a difficult history: For nearly three decades, countries as varied as South Africa, Rwanda, and the nations of Latin America and post-Communist Eastern Europe have been engaged in this process, often called “transitional justice.” That’s a broad term for the ways in which societies deal with the legacies of past injustice.

Despite how unsavory and barbaric Islamic groups and persons around the world have been behaving—whether Nigeria’s Boko Haram, Mesopotamia’s Islamic State, Somalia’s Shabaab—perhaps few things are as disgusting and cowardly as the Muslim rape of nuns: defenseless Christian women who sacrifice much of their lives to help sick and needy Muslims. The latest such attack comes from Bangladesh, which is over 90% Muslim in population. In early July, dozens of men armed with machetes, knives and iron rods attacked the convent of PIME (Pontifical Institute of Foreign Missions nuns in Boldipuku), a village mission in north Bangladesh. “The nuns were
