Obama to AFSCME: GOP ‘absurd’
Politico, by Sarah Smith

(Video) President Barack Obama used his Wednesday video message to the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees convention to call GOP attacks “absurd.” “That’s why it’s so absurd that Republicans in Washington are trying to blame unions for economic challenges facing working Americans,” Obama said in a pretaped video message, after praising unions. “Unions aren’t the ones blocking workers from getting a raise. Unions aren’t the ones blocking fair pay. Unions aren’t the ones blocking common sense jobs to grow the economy for everyone. And unions sure aren’t the ones cheering this week’s Supreme Court ruling that made

Unions are not the ones creating a porous border for low wage competition. Unions are not the ones opposing Keystone. Unions are not the ones creating economic uncertainty with devastating new regulations, destroying job creation. Unions are not flying door to door with air force one, blaming everyone and everything else.

SEOUL- Three U.S. citizens detained in North Korea spoke to the U.S. television channel CNN on Monday with one pleading with the United States for help and another describing his situation as "urgent". Kenneth Bae, who was arrested 18 months ago and sentenced to 15 years hard labour for attempting to bring down the state, told CNN he was working eight hours a day, six days a week, and was the only inmate at a prison camp staffed by more than 20 officials, including a doctor. PYONGYANG, North Korea — North Korea gave foreign media access on Monday to three detained Americans who said they have been able to contact their families and — watched by officials as they spoke — called for Washington to send a high-ranking representative to negotiate for their freedom. Jeffrey Fowle and Mathew Miller said they expect to face trial within a month. But they said they do not know what punishment they could face or what the specific charges against them are. Kenneth Bae, who already is serving a 15-year term, said his health has deteriorated at the labor camp

Without offering specifics on any threats or suggestions on how to confront them, the leaders of the Senate and House intelligence committees on Sunday prodded the White House to work to prevent the Islamic State extremists from launching attacks on U.S. soil. The bipartisan pair of lawmakers shared a dire warning about the Islamic State group, which now has control of vast swaths of Syria and Iraq, has killed civilians from

Short of world war, it’s rare that a chief executive goes through a foreign policy month like President Obama’s August. Islamic State militants beheaded an American journalist in Syria and spread their reach across the Middle East. War raged between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. It will take two decades to rebuild the thousands of houses destroyed during Israel’s assault on Gaza, according to a recent NGO report. At least 17,000 homes were obliterated or severely damaged during the conflict, with thousands more needing substantial repairs, according to an assessment by Shelter Cluster. More than 2,100 Palestinians, most of them civilians, were killed during the conflict. In addition 71 Israelis were killed – all but six of them soldiers. But the report on Gaza’s housing stock indicates inhabitants of the densely populated strip will face a severe infrastructural burden over the coming years.
