Washington state says marijuana

SEATTLE- Marijuana stores in Washington state can sell marijuana in cookies, brownies and other approved baked goods but cannot put the drug in candies, lollipops or food items that might appeal to children, according to newly released rules. Washington became the second U.S. state to allow recreational sales of marijuana to adults on July 8 when its first retail stores opened under a heavily regulated and taxed system approved by voters in 2012. The state´s Liquor Control Board, which regulates the fledgling sector, published the guidelines on Wednesday for the packaging and labeling of marijuana edibles. It prohibited any products,

Makes perfect sense. Everybody knows that cookies and brownies are grown-up food. They don´t appeal to kids in the least.

(It´s kinda pathetic, watching these people vainly pretending to be rational.)

President Obama stopped by for an unscheduled dinner on Monday night at the home of Sam Kass, a White House chef and adviser to first lady Michelle Obama. A White House pool report said his deputy chief of staff Anita Decker Breckenridge also joined him for the dinner. No other details were provided. Obama flew back to Washington from Martha´s Vineyard, Mass. on Sunday night, breaking up his two-week vacation. But it is unclear if Monday night´s dinner is the reason Obama made the trip back to Washington before he returns to Martha´s Vineyard to resume his vacation on Tuesday.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry picked up another statement of support from a potential 2016 presidential rival. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, in his capacity as chairman of the Republican Governors Association, issued a statement Monday in support of Perry, who was indicted in Austin last week on abuse of power charges by a Travis County grand jury. “I have complete faith and confidence in Governor Perry’s honesty and integrity,” Christie said in a statement released through the RGA. “And I’m sure that will be confirmed over time.” Christie joins Jeb Bush, Ted Cruz and Bobby Jindal — all attracting notice

Utah officials are scrambling to prevent the Obama administration from locking down thousands of acres of land in their backyard, as federal officials consider up to a dozen possible national monument designations – all in western states. The Antiquities Act gives U.S. presidents the authority to unilaterally declare public lands as national monuments at the stroke of a pen, with no input from the public unless they choose to seek it. Many national monuments eventually go on to become national parks. National Parks Conservation Association spokeswoman Kristen Brengel said the practice has been used for over a century to preserve

Whiskey is back! Bourbon production

Kentucky bourbon makers are making a big bet by stashing away their largest stockpiles in more than a generation. To put it in bartenders´ lingo: Distillers are putting up the tab for millions of rounds of bourbon years before they are even ordered. The production poses an inherent risk, but hitting the moment right - a big supply meshing with big demand - could mean a serious payday for companies big and small. Missing the target would leave bourbon makers awash with supply and leave future production in question, particularly for craft distilleries

Dr. Ben Carson vs. Rev. Al Sharpton? Carson on Monday challenged Sharpton to a public debate on how violence across America can be tapered down, using the unrest in Ferguson, Mo., as a launching point. “I had an opportunity to speak with Reverend Sharpton a couple months ago at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner,” Carson said on Fox News, “and said, ‘we want the same kinds of things but we have very different approaches to achieving them. What do you think about a public debate to talk about the various ways that we can get this done?’” Carson said Sharpton

The use of tear gas by Missouri law enforcement has caused a run on gas masks in the St. Louis area. Local residents, reporters, and video production crews are making last minute calls to places like Uncle Sam’s military surplus only to find out that gas masks, gas mask filters, and bullet proof vests are all sold out. “My mother feels like a virtual prisoner in her home,” said one Ferguson resident who attempted to buy a gas mask. Other equipment being bought up are ear plugs to block out the loud blast from the LRAD sound cannon as well as

Previously unnoticed audio from a video recorded in the chaotic moments after Michael Brown´s fatal shooting last Saturday in Ferguson, Missouri, could help back up Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson´s version of events. Overheard while one man films the gruesome aftermath of Brown´s daylight shooting, the barely discernible audio is of one unseen man recounting the alleged version of events that he saw to another man, off camera, while bystanders scream and shout at police to assist the stricken 18-year-old. At around the six minute and 30 second mark in the 10 minute long video, one man is just heard over

WASHINGTON— Unemployment rates rose in 30 U.S. states last month, even as employers in two-thirds of the states stepped up hiring. The trends reflect an increase in job-hunters nationwide as an improving economy has encouraged more people to seek work. The Labor Department said Monday that unemployment rates fell in eight states in July and were unchanged in 12. At the same time, hiring rose in 36 states, fell in 13, and was unchanged in Iowa. The national unemployment rate ticked up to 6.2 percent in July from 6.1 percent in June, the government said earlier this month, even as

Violence continues in Ferguson, Missouri. It began on August 9 with the death of Michael Brown, an unarmed African-American teenager cut down by a white cop’s bullets. Peaceful demonstrations turned into looting, the local police went in with rubber bullets and tear gas, all hell broke loose and, eventually, Missouri’s governor pulled out the local police and sent in state officers instead. But the rioting only paused; it didn’t cease. The party left me.” Without doubt, the party under Barack Obama has left those Jews who view Israel’s security as threatened. Fallon also said that the Department of Justice will still take into account the state-performed autopsy during its civil rights investigation of Brown´s murder. Historians will have the rest of the century to unravel the mess that is the Barack Obama presidency. While they can explore these years of foreign policy disaster and domestic malaise at leisure, the rest of us have 29 more months to see just how awful things can get before he slides off to a lucrative retirement. But those who want to start the post-mortem on this historic presidency would do well to read Jackson Diehl’s most recent Washington Post column in which he identifies Obama’s hubris as the key element in his undoing. McDonald’s has a problem. For the first time in 10 years, the company generated less revenue in a month than it did a year before, and it’s not a blip. The world’s biggest burger chain has been posting lagging results for some time, particularly in the United States. Blake Casper says he has a very good idea why. “Companies like Chipotle are doing a great job talking to people about healthy food, and they’re changing the dynamic of how people eat,” said Casper, who owns Tampa Bay’s largest McDonald’s franchise group with his sister Allison Casper Adams. “We embrace that

He has been replaced by NBC White House correspondent Chuck Todd.
